Didn't the Mac Pro come with a spot for an antenna for the wi-fi, or am I misremembering which model had that?

I'm pretty sure he's talking about MacBook Pro... but yes, on Mac Pro both AirPort and Bluetooth are not standard and there are places to install them if Apple hasn't already.

Canada Posted Yesterday, 1:29 am in iPod, iPhone & Apple TV

It's "lose" not "loose." Never rely on a spell checker! :)

As the owner of a jailbroken iPhone, I can honestly tell you there's really not much reason to do it. I *had* to do it because I needed to unlock my iPhone for use in my new country. There are a handful (I mean that literally -- less than a dozen) nifty apps that you can't find a version of on the App Store, and of course you can customize the background (which would prove amusing to a 12-year-old probably, but is just boring to everyone else).

But to address your direct question, you *can't* lose your music or apps. The music is already backed up in iTunes, and the apps etc are backed up in iTunes as well. As with any system hacking there is SOME risk of "bricking" the iPhone, but it's pretty minimal.

Keynote is Apple's far superior presentation software. It's part of iWork. Keynote would only be found on a Mac, so if you have access to a Mac with Keynote you might have better luck if you open your presentation in Keynote and save it as a standard Keynote format.

You can use freeware Windows emulator called Wine to run Windows applications. I haven't managed to run WM Recorder using Wine, but Replay Media Catcher works good with it:
http://stream-recorder.com/forum/instal ... t6023.html

Search for
- capturing streaming video on Mac OS X
- record flash video streams on Mac OS X
- recording streaming video on Mac OS X
...
and you may find more applications

You might want to try one of the wireless range extender solutions available from most wireless router manufacturers. Place one of these or a similar device within range of the wireless network you're trying to reach. It'll then take that signal and retransmit it as if it were the router.
Sounds like exactly what you'd need in your situation.

Thank you for the point of clarity regarding the names. However, it is a problem the signal I need to hook onto is the one in the building in which I reside. If the airport function does not work here the computer is useless to me. The MacBookPro was to be the home computer and the Macbook (smaller and more portable) was to be the on-the-road computer. Is there anything I can do to change and ameliorate this situation.
Thanks m64

United States Posted March 15th, 2010, 10:52 pm in MacBook, MacBook Pro, iBook & PowerBook

Different generations of MacBooks and MacBook Pros vary wildly in their wireless network reception abilities. The most often complaint from "Pros" relates to the aluminum case interfering with the signal. This was even more pronounced when PowerBook G4s were manufactured with titanium cases. It's not necessarily a sign of a problem, just two different hardware sets.

Also, be careful to refer to it as "MacBook Pro" and not "Mac Pro" which is the name of Apple's high end workstation towers and may confuse people.

Topic moved to MacBook, MacBook pro, iBook & PowerBook folder.

I have 2 mac laptops, one is a macbook the other a macpro I purchased recently (used but in good condition) from an associate. The macbook's airport function works decidedly differently from the macbook, yet both are about the same age and both have the same operating systems (snow leopard). My macbook' airport function detects more internet connections and gets a stronger signal. My Macpro detects far fewer and on the open connection of the building even detects a weaker signal than my macbook. Same connection very different responce from the airport function. Anybody have any ideas why?

I'll be honest with you I'm totally lost here. What does "trying to make a sim" mean? I think as someone has suggested before, it's probably because it's a 100+ slide PowerPoint. It may be a matter of your iPod Touch not having the resources to display it. If you have access to Keynote maybe you can make a Keynote version and there's a slim chance your iPod may have a easier time opening that.

100 slides is probably more than the iPod Touch can handle. Remember it has like 128MB of RAM -- not a lot by today's standards.

You may want to try breaking that up into, let's say, 5 slideshows of 20 slides each and see if that works better.

I'm having a bit of a difficult time imagining why anyone would WANT to watch a 100-slide presentation on an iPod Touch, but I'm sure you have your reasons. :)

You don't have to pay $30/month. Just use Wifi instead (and save $130 by getting the wifi-only model).

Or get a MiFi or some future device along those lines. Or use the 3G capability more selectively and pay the $30 for only those months in which you actually need it -- there's no contract obligation in the US.

According to Steve, yes.

However, Steve's answer ignores options such as the MiFi box (or something like it) which turns cellular data into wifi data, thus allowing sharing of one data source with multiple devices.

I would imagine that other developers would come up with some other ways to defeat that limitation as well, like a simpler version of the Mifi that attaches to the universal dock connector.

Won't happen right away, of course, but I'd expect something like that to evolve.

United States Posted March 11th, 2010, 12:34 pm in Other Apple Devices

If by DSN you mean DNS, then for some reason your router isn't getting a DNS server from your ISP. You might try manually plugging in some generic DNS like 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 and see if that helps you there, like so:

Screen shot 2010-03-11 at 11.33.52 AM.png (114.92 KiB) Viewed 65 times

If you want a bit more flexibility you can try opening a free OpenDNS account and configure your router and/or Mac to use that.

For a whole my mac has been really slow. Even when typing, the letters took seconds to appear. Then, last night, I couldn't get on the Internet. I have a Time Capsul. It was showing the green light but no Internet. I restarted it. Then I got a message- something like: "this apple wireless devise doesn't have a DSN address. It may have trouble connecting to the Internet." I'm a bit clueless about this stuff. How do I find out what my DSN address is? And how did I lose it to begin with?!

If anybody around here has any idea what is going on I'm sure they'll post.

Why don't you try using one of the other methods to connect to Gmail besides Exchange and see if it turns out to be more reliable? It sounds like an issue with Gmail's services combined with Exchange, or possibly something to do with having both a Google app installed and Google setup using iPhone's Exchange services.

I'm getting Gmail just fine in Mail.app on my desktop Mac, which is fundamentally similar to the iPhone version.
