Info-Mac was the first virtual community covering the Macintosh computer. Info-Mac was created in June of 1984, six months after the release of the first Macintosh 128K. Info-Mac comprised of the Info-Mac Archive, a user-submitted collection of nearly all contemporary freeware and shareware available for the Macintosh, and the Info-Mac Digest, an electronic mailing list. At its height, the Info-Mac Digest was read daily by several thousand people, and was mirrored in the Usenet group comp.sys.mac.digest. The Info-Mac Archive was the centralized collection of Macintosh software with over 100 mirror sites located around the world. For a time after the commercialization of the Internet, popular software download sites, like CNET's Shareware.com, were in fact mirrors of the Info-Mac Archive. This first iteration of Info-Mac closed after 21 years, in December of 2005.
In December of 2007 Info-Mac was relaunched as a modern web community, containing all of the former Info-Mac Archive downloads and much of the Info-Mac Digests in a new searchable database. The Digest has been replaced by a forum-based community where users can post discuss current Apple topics and post files to share with others.
