Help!! Unix/mac problem

How do I open a unix file from disc on a mac iv tried reading about it but I don't understand. Any help! I would be very greatfull

There are some movies and pictures on a disc that r classed as unix expendable file's all I can do is click quick look but that won't show anything either I just want to know how to open them up or change format so they can be opened up. Thanks

Are those very big or confidential files?
If not, could you upload to Mediafire to let me take a look?
I have a GNU-Linux box and might try to inflate the files, if you wish.

You might also try the Unarchiver, which usually can inflate tar/gz files and a lot more.

To be honest I couldn't tell u wants on them at the moment that why I want to unlock/open them lol

Well "files" aren't necessarily Unix-specific. Do they have a file extension? Do you know what program created them? What are they named? Are they executables (applications) or documents (created by an application)?

You can open any file with TextWrangler and it will show you its raw contents. You could possibly determine the nature of the files that way.

I didn't create the files all I know is there from another mac and they are pictures and movies

At least you know them to be Mac files
As Snow Leo ignores FILE and CREATOR types you have to guess I´m afraid, unless you try what Turboladdade suggested.
Classic has some apps that will show the ID´s, you could try to check the files there.
Can you open some files with Miro maybe? Miro has quite a lot of movie converters built in.

If you know them to have been created by another Mac, there is a very good chance you can open them in QuickTime Player with the "File>Open File…" command.

The freeware VLC also opens a wide variety of media formats natively not supported by QTP without extra plug-ins.
