Re: dev.apple.com FTP archives

Hello,

I'm sure I don't have the publications but there is a very good chance I have the software itself archived going back to OS 8.6. Let me know what in particular you are looking for.

Re: Transfer contact from sim card to phone contact

I think your best bet is to sync the phone to a network service like Google or Outlook Exchange and then have Outlook sync to that. There are SIM card readers and editing software that can translate from the card to a format that Outlook can import, but the phones and Outlook are already designed to...

Re: Problem with Time Machine

Unfortunately you can't just merge the two backup streams.

If you need to access the older backups, you can control-click on TM in the dock and select "browse other TM disks".

Re: sticky menus

There is no way to easily adjust the timing, but there is another solution. In the same "Keyboard and Mouse" pane under the "Keyboard Shortcuts" tab there is a subsection called "Keyboard Navigation". You can use this to activate the "Move focus to the menu bar&quo...

Re: hypercard on iphone

Ain't gonna happen. However, if you can imagine the "cards" as presentation slides, then Keynote is very close to what you are looking for. Judicious use of linking and macros could make a Keynote presentation behave very much like a HyperCard stack. There is of course the option of using ...

Re: How to import an image in Safari

If you are trying to *import* a file to an interactive PDF loaded in Safari, it probably won't work. In general, I agree with Tuboladdade that opening the file in Preview should be your first choice. Even if the Adobe-specific interactivity isn't supported, you can import graphic files, "Menu >...

Re: Kernel panic at boot, safe boot works fine

All Intel-based Macs are EFI-based. Open Firmware will go extinct when the last of the PowerPC Macs have been retired. To reset the PRAM, "cnd + opt + P + R" does still work, and might actually help since a reset would cause the computer to rescan the motherboard for available devices inst...

Re: Macbook Pro keeps restarting and QuickTime Player opening

My Mac works fine for the majority of the time. However, about once a week it will be working fine, and then the screen will go black, remain black for 5-10 seconds, then my desktop will reappear but with a blue screen and all of the programs closed, then my desktop wallpaper will reappear, and the...

Re: How to capture keystrokes and messages from a Mac?

I wouldn't install anything like that on any of my computers for the very simple reason that the same software that allows you to monitor your son's activity will allow anyone else to monitor yours. I also suspect that your boss will not be too enthusiastic about your use of company time and resourc...

Attachments are saved to the folder according to preferences. In Mail.app that would be in the "General" tab.

Re: Extending AirPort - two networks visible to PCs?

Sorry, I misunderstood. That's. Weird. You've probably already tried resetting both stations, clicking "Allow Extended" for the primary and "Extend a wireless network" for the secondary, so the only other thing I can think of is to try again using the Windows version of Airport U...

Re: Extending AirPort - two networks visible to PCs?

Sorry I didn't see this sooner; I hope it didn't cause any trouble for you over the holiday weekend. I note that you have given the base station the name "PrivateWiFi-N". Does this mean you have it configured as an 802.11 n Wireless Access Point? According to Apple, you need to restrict it...

Re: Help!! Unix/mac problem

If you know them to have been created by another Mac, there is a very good chance you can open them in QuickTime Player with the "File>Open File…" command.

The freeware VLC also opens a wide variety of media formats natively not supported by QTP without extra plug-ins.

Re: fan control software

In order to do this in software under OS 9, resources in the System Suitcase would need to be patched and the computer rebooted for every adjustment. Such software is not generally available because it has been tried and found to be more trouble than it is worth. YMMV.

Re: fan control software

The fans are performing the important function of cooling your computer in order to protect the components from excessive heat. I recommend you "do it like the pros" and use some sort of baffle or isolation booth around the area where the microphone is being used, cabling extensions to rel...

Re: Automator to change screensaver

Quartz Composer, which is part of the optional Developers Tools, is the right tool for this job. There are built-in templates for visualizing RSS feeds as well as composing screensaver components that require little to no coding. Depending on version -- Leopard or Snow Leopard -- one would need to d...

Re: Where are the System Sounds ?

For the general alert sound, this is easy. The basic sounds are located in /System/Library/Sounds/ and are in AIFF. You can add custom sounds to either /Library/Sounds/ or ~/Library/Sounds/ and they will show up in the Sounds pane of the System Preferences panel where they can be selected for the ge...

Re: Multi-booting: Mac OS 9.2.2 stopped booting

If it's the picture of a disk with a flashing question mark you are seeing, that indicates that the machine can't find a bootable volume and the boot drive needs to be blessed. You can try the old way by removing the System file and/or the Finder file from the System Folder, then dragging the file(s...

Re: 2006 Mac Pro internal RAID questions...

This can be done with Disk Utility under Leopard or later as a software RAID. (For anyone lurking, to do what Turboladdade wants, two pairs of drives are first striped and the resulting RAID volumes are then mirrored.) I don't recall anymore whether that was available in Tiger.

Re: "compare document" in NeoOffice (in Edit menu)

FYI, Oracle is no longer supporting the development of OpenOffice.org. I just had a chance to download and test the compare command in LibreOffice , and it works more like what you expect, so using several programs at once shouldn't be needed after all. It is still a good trick to know if you need t...
