Re: i miss System 7

gather the necessary bits to make sheepshaver work and run System 7 on it if you like. You'll quickly realise that nostalgia is nice for a visit, but you can't really go home again.

Re: Macbook pro 2016 vs macbook pro 2012

You already have a computer that is significantly faster in all respects than even a fully-upgraded MBP 2012 (I am typing this on an upgraded 2012 MBP). Whoever told you that it is "as fast" is full of it -- these upgrades will certain help make it closer in speed, but the CPU, GPU, storag...

Re: Can I recover accidentally deleted logic Pro files on Mac?

Seconded. Good luck retrieving the files, and I trust you understand that Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or some other free-to-low-cost investment would have prevented this tragedy, and you'll not repeat that mistake.

Re: iWeb and uploading?

GoDaddy itself offers hosting as well, but you are not obligated to them just because you bought the domain name there -- they just need to "forward" the domain to wherever you end up hosting the web site. I use Mobile Me and have GoDaddy redirect my domain there. That way I can have multi...

Re: OS X mail virus??

There aren't any Mac viruses. E-mail or any other form. As in ZERO. Sophos is warning you of WINDOWS viruses (or phishing scams, at best) it has found. These don't affect you, so you should ignore them. Uninstall Sophos is the simple answer to your problem. You don't need it and it's not doing anyth...

If you have synced the iPad with iTunes and it says you are up-to-date, then you already have iOS 4.2

I'm one of those pro designers Turboladdade was talking about, I now use InDesign for the serious work and Pages for everyday stuff -- it's fabulous. As far as Keynote goes, there is no finer slideshow program on the planet period end of discussion. I also agree with him about OpenOffice -- if I wan...

Re: The big day arrives

There are a wide variety of HTML/CSS editors out there. To help narrow things down a bit, tell us a little about what you were using before. This isn't my area of expertise, but if you code by hand then I'd suggest you look at BBEdit, Coda or Expresso. Expresso: http://macrabbit.com/espresso/ Coda: ...

Re: iMac g4

It's a real pity more people don't understand that "obsolete" is a term with a specific meaning, and not slang for "useless junk."

G4s and G5s are indeed obsolete. But they can still be perfectly serviceable machines depending on what the user needs them to do.

Re: Newbie iPad Questions

1. Touch and hold any app. They will all start to "wiggle" and a black X appears in the upper left corner of their icon. Touch the X on any app you want to delete. 2. Your iPad is automatically backed up each time you sync it with your computer unless you have deliberately turned this off,...

Re: To jailbreak or not to jail break?

I'm not "uneducated" on the subject, my mother just raised me right (unlike some, apparently). I don't steal from developers who make products I think are worthy of support. I don't undermine the platform I depend on for my living, and in general I try to do unto others etc. Too bad not ev...

Re: Choppy YouTube Video Imac G4

If you can run a fairly recent browser (like recent Firefox or Safari versions), you could try signing in on the HTML 5 beta for YouTube and test that. It should make a difference not using Flash. It will be slower to load at first, but should play smoother.

Re: Flash player for iPod touch

If Adobe will ever get their act together and actually release a lean, mean Flash player, the entire mobile smartphone market -- not just Apple -- will be happy about it. But most of the major video sites now realize that's just not going to happen anytime soon and have moved on to HTML5. It's broad...

Re: Movies download for iPhone/touch

There's an app for the National Film Board of Canada that offers free movies. There are many sites out there that offer public-domain films for free as well (I just downloaded a 1931 Sherlock Holmes movie that way, in fact!). But no, we're not going to help you break the law by pirating films illega...

Re: Locking apps

Not that I'm aware of. Because the iPhone/touch/iPad is currently set for one user account only, anyone who uses the device has access to all of it. You might look round the App Store to see if there's an app that will lock FOLDERS of apps (this obviously applies only to iOS 4 and higher devices -- ...

Re: Photoshop install disks

Actually I do have it working, but I don't consider it anywhere near "ready for prime time" in terms of non-geeks being able to use it. Kinda like Linux. <ducks> Mainly I don't want people to get the impression that there's an easy, practical way to rely on that OS 9 crutch indefinitely, b...

Re: Photoshop install disks

Sheepshaver is only a marginally better solution, as it requires you to supply a Mac OS ROM which is probably not legal. Also, any mention of Sheepshaver should be accompanied by caveats: 1. It's quite difficult for non-geeks to install. 2. It hasn't been undated in years. 3. A lot of people seem to...
