If you leave your service provider I'm pretty sure you can't keep an ISP-based email address. You should choose a free email service provider like Gmail, sign up, and then send an email to all your existing contacts from your AOL address to tell them about your new address.
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

AOL email accounts are free. Every AIM user has one or more. This former AOL subscriber maintains his AOL email address years after dropping his subscription. This takeaway message is that you may take you AOL email address with you wherever you go and not pay cent for it.
