How many systems can a mac go though before it goes in a corner or the finder puts it in the trash! The CRT iMacs can run Tiger but how many systems can a mac go though. I mean PowerPC G5's only went up to Leopard a very short life span! Can you really say "thats it" to that G4 iMac that was in the window only a few years before! I would like my mac's to live a long life replacing a mac is like putting a perl in the bin because a prettier one came out!

Well you sortof answered your own question... there is no set rule or number, it is entirely up to Apple's discretion.
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

My 'WallStreet' G3 (upgraded to a G4/500/512MB/dual 60 gig internal drives before finally being supplanted) could boot MacOS 8.1; and although I stopped with Panther, folks have reporting success with XPostFacto for installing Tiger on that same machine. So that's every OS between MacOS Classic 8.1 and MacOS X 10.4.11, which is a pretty decent stretch.
I think perhaps the old Mac Plus still holds the crown though. It would boot System 1.1 through System 7.5.
