Font Smoothie 1.2

Requirements
Mac OS 8.5 or higher. Any PowerPC Mac.

What's new in 1.2?
You can now change the view font from Font Smoothie. Now you won't have to
wait for the Appearance control panel to launch every time you want to
change your views font. You can do it all from Font Smoothie.
Fixed some minor bugs, and added some minor enhancements.

What's new in 1.1?
Some minor fixes and interface touch-ups.

What is Font Smoothie?
Font Smoothie is a small application that will allow you to achieve more
control over your fonts. This program is targeted towards system fonts,
their sizes, and their font smoothing minimum size.

The MacOS systems only allow a select range of fonts to be used as system
fonts. This is the overall font that you see in the titles of windows,
menus, dialogs, etc. There is also a restriction on size: the font can only
be 12 point.

Font Smoothie will allow you to change the system font to any font that is
available in your system. It also allows any size font. Some fonts look
better bigger, others smaller, depending on the situation and font design.

You can now change your views font from Font Smoothie as well. This is the
font that displays underneath the icons in the Finder. This can also be
changed by the Appearance control panel. But if you're like us, you hate
waiting for the Appearance control panel to load, and it is much nicer to
change all fonts from one program.

A relatively new enhancement of the MacOS is the ability to have the
on-screen fonts anti-aliased (smoothed). This makes the fonts look much
better, and add¹s a touch of class to the OS. A restriction exists that only
allows the font size to be 12 point or higher. Font Smoothie allows fonts as
low as 9 point to be smoothed. Therefore, all fonts that are on-screen,
true-type, and 9 point or higher can be smoothed!

Font Smoothie is compatible with Kaleidoscope, and looks great when they are
used together. Kaleidoscope allows you to change the system font as well,
but there is a long-standing bug with it that causes the menus to have
ellipses in them. This makes all of the menus appear like this (FiŠ EdŠ
SpeciŠ) Font Smoothie corrects this bug.

How do I install it?
Simply drag the Font Smoothie control panel and Font Smoothie extension onto
your System Folder and restart. To use, open the Font Smoothie control
panels and select the desired System Font and size. You will see the results
immediately. You can also turn on Font Smoothing and set the minimum size
you would like smoothed (just like the Apple Appearance control panel, only
more options).

Why was it written?
This program was written because we just couldn¹t stand looking at the
Apple-bundled system fonts any longer. There are so many better looking
fonts out there, and we wanted the ability to use them as our System Font.
Other interface-enhancement programs exist that have the ability of Font
Smoothie, but they usually change the overall appearance of the system which
slows it down and can create a higher potential for an unstable system.

How does it work?
Font Smoothie tricks the OS into thinking there is a broad range of system
fonts. Therefore it shows all the ones loaded instead of the normal few. It
doesn¹t patch any appearance routines in the OS, it uses the standard ones,
making the potential for instability much lower, and there will not be any
performance issues.

Known Issues
When selecting really large fonts (usually 18 point or higher), some
windows¹ title bars may appear to be Œclipped¹. This can be rectified by
restarting the program that exhibits these symptoms. This is harmless, and
may not even be noticable.

Shareware
This program is shareware. If you use it on a regular basis, please

Techie Stuff
Font Smoothie conists of a control panel and an extension. The extension
loads at startup of the OS. It tricks the system into using any font that is
loaded into the system. It does it without occupying a large amount of RAM
and without patching your OS Appearance routines that can cause slow-downs.
It was designed for this exact reason, since we have been looking for a
program that would do this for years, and our only choice was to write it
ourselves.

Uninstalling
To remove the program, pull out the Font Smoothie control panel and the Font
Smoothie Extension from the System Folder. It will be disabled on the next
restart. You can also disable it with Conflict Catcher or the Apple
Extensions Manager.

Distribution
Font Smoothie may be distributed in/on CD-ROMs, magazines, user groups, etc,
but it must include the complete archive as it comes from the No-U-Turn web
site. You are not required to get permission to put this software within
your media.

What's in the future for Font Smoothie?
Well, you know how Internet Explorer 5 has the cool new 'flavor' feature
where you can change your Mac colors to more than the defaults? We are
working on a feature of Font Smoothie that will do the same. We hope to
offer it as an update real soon.

We hope you enjoy it!
