Subject: Complete G3 screwup

I feel like the subject line should read: "ready to kill myself".
I have a beige G3 running system 8.1. Had a Laserwriter Select 360 and
Epson Stylus Pro XL cabled together and to the Mac. Everything was
working fine but I decided it was high time to upgrade the system, and
also my 6 gig hard drive was full. Called a tech guy in. We decided to
add a firewire card to the mac and a new external firewire 20 gig HD.
Dragged my old HD over to the new one. Installed system 9.1. Installed
photoshop upgrade from 5.01 to 6.01, ATM deluxe upgrade, Adobe Acrobat
upgrade. Problem 1, Adobe Acrobat would not install. Unlocking number
woukdn't work. Everything else ok.

Next day...can't print from either printer. Tech comes back spends 11
hours trying to figure out the problem. Spends hours on the phone with
Apple, finally senior apple tech tells him the problem is Applewriter
Select 360 not compatible w/ system 9.1. OK go backto 8.6 still no
printers. Try everything. reinstalling etc. Still no printers. Plus the
next thing I know...All my stuff (3 gigs worth of work) is gone from the
external HD. Somehow got trashed erased or something. Of course alot of
that stuff was NOT backed up!

So now...no work files, no printers, no fax modem. And I feel like a
complete idiot because I didn't have everything backed up. Actually I
did...on the firewire drive which then was somehow wiped out.

Does anyone have any thoughts about what to do here? The tech has
exhausted all resources. Is there any way to get my work back?

Ready to shoot myself in New Yorkà

Subject: Optical Mouse (maintenance?)

Thursday, July 26, 2001

My one year old iMac-DV-SE has an Apple Pro Mouse (optical
mouse). It's never (yet) caused a problem, but ...

My experiences with prior mice was that the rollers inside
needed occasional cleaning, to remove build-up of sludge.

Questions:

1) Should I do something to maintain the Pro Mouse's
serviceability?

2) What does the 3-position plastic ring on the underside do?

Subject: Printing in multiuser mode

I need to know how to make OS 9.x print when the computer is in
multiuser mode and not the key user. I understand that new drivers
are required, but what printer will work in that mode? Laser printer
preferred, but anything that will work will be better than having to
go back to a PC.
