'English Verbs 2.1' is a plug-in module for the 'Verbs & Nouns'
language-learning program. This module helps Macintosh users to study and
practise the inflection of English verbs. It is useful to native English

new words, and construct groups of verbs that you want to practise. You can

Folks;
Please forgive if this is a FAQ. Does anyone know of any audio recording
software that will havndle web streams, similar to TotalRecorder for the
Windoze world, for the classic MacOS? (Basically, this software creates a
driver that sits between the machine and the audio subsystem, "stealing"
anything headed for the subsystem and writing it to disk first before sending
it on its way.) I've been recording external outputs since the Mac Plus and
MacRecorder (all those who remember then, sigh for your lost youth), but I'm
wondering if there's a way to record some real-time web streams when I'm out
for later listening. (Yeah, I'm talking about time-shifting Internet
radio...go figure.) Freeware, shareware, or commercial is fine, doesn't
matter.
I will cheerfully summarize for the list, if there's enough information.

A lot of the spam I get is misdated. It would be handy to have a
filter that automatically trashes anything more than a year out of
date. However, I don't see that Eudora has any provision for
filtering messages by date. Does anybody have any ideas how it might
be done?
In my experience, genuine users' computer clocks are seldom more than
a year off.

Subject: Crucified by PostScript problems - Please Help!
In my office I have a venerable Laserwriter II NT which has given me
excellent service for nearly 10 years and a more recently acquired
second-hand Laserwriter 4/600 PS. About 18 months ago - coinciding roughly
with my move from System 7.5 to OS8.x - my ttempts at printing began to fail
with 'PostScript error' messages. At first this was sporadic but it
gradually grew in significance until now these PS errors have become a major
problem, significantly interfering with my work.
The following points are relevant:
(1) The errors occur with both printers, irrespective of whether one or the
other is connected to my Mac via a single printer cable or both are connected
simultaneously via one of those cables with little boxes at regular intervals
- I forget the technical term. This would suggest that the printers
themselves are not to blame.
(2) The errors have persisted through various versions of the MacOS from 8.1
through 8.6 up to 9.1 and several clean installs of each. This would suggest
that system or font problems are not to blame.
(3) The errors persisted when I replaced my original PPC 8200/120 with a G3
MiniTower suggesting that a hardware problem is not the cause.
(4) No improvement was noted when I gave PrintMonitor memory a significant
boost.
(5) The documents I print almost all originate in Word 5.1a or Word 98 -
although the problem also showed today when I tried to print text from
SimpleText and from a Web page in Explorer 5. With a few exceptions,
documents originating on my machine have a maximun of two fonts - usually
Times New Roman or Bookman with Symbol.
(6) The problem occurs with large documents and small, with pasted-in
graphics or none. Sometimes page-by-page printing helps, sometimes it
doesn't. Sometimes a document which printed sucessfully on an earlier
occasion now fails - sometimes the reverse happens.
I am now at my wit's end and the considerable time wasted around printing is
eating into my productivity. I will be eternally grateful to anyone who can
give me a handle on this infuriating problem.

Subject: Epson & iMac
I am trying to run an Epson Perfection 1240u scanner (TWAIN 5.00A)
on a tray-loader iMac (OS 9.1). The machine imports the TWAIN 5 through
Photoshop 6, but as soon as it runs a Preview of the bed, the iMac locks
up. I checked the Epson site and it seems there are updates out for
Windows, but not yet for iMac. Has anyone else seen this problem? Epson
has not responded yet. Thanks in advance.

Subject: G4 freezes on boot-up
We just got 27 second-generation G4s in our lab and I have noticed
they tend to freeze up upon boot-up. Sometimes when I press the power
button on the monitor, the computer will power up, but it won't boot-up -
not even a gray screen on the monitor. Once this happens, I press the
reset button and then it boots up fine. Seems to be randomly and
irregularly common around the room. Could this be a firmware problem?

Subject: looking for a pop-up menu Finder hierarchy utility
Hi all,
I am the proud owner of a new TiBook (after 11 years away from the
Mac) and I miss a great utility I used to have "way back when". The
utility used to allow me to click and hold the mouse over a folder- I
would then get a pop-up menu of all items in that folder- including
other folders, which I could select to get hierarchical menus of all
items (including all folders) within that folder.
The (I hope obvious) advantage here was that you didn't have to open
(and then close) all the enclosing folders to get to something (or
click on the triangles to show them in the other Finder mode) and it
made it really easy to scan through a hierarchy quickly, going up and
down and in and out of any folder.
So, my question is: do any of you know of any utility that would do
that for me in MacOS 9.x?

P.S. - I know about the 1.5 click to get the magnifying glass to
spring open folders. Unfortunately, this does not give me the
possibility of going back up the hierarchy once I've scanned the open

the computer is checking the installed ram at bootup
the more ram you have the longer it will take
you can turn off this feature by cmd-opt doubleclicking
the memory controlpanel

Sounds like the memory test. To disable it -
With the Command and the Option keys held down, open the Memory
control panel. This will allow you the extra option, Startup Memory
Tests, the bottom test. Select the OFF box. That should make a big
difference.

Your machine is doing a RAM integrity check. If you are running 8.1
or 9.x, you can hold the option and apple (command) keys down while
opening the Memory Control Panel, you'll find a new option "Startup
Memory Tests". Click the Off radio button and enjoy quicker startups.
Now for a question to the forum - does anyone know how to do the
equivalent function (disable startup memory tests) in OSX?

Please forgive if this is a FAQ. Does anyone know of any audio recording
software that will havndle web streams, similar to TotalRecorder for the
Windoze world, for the classic MacOS? (Basically, this software creates a
driver that sits between the machine and the audio subsystem, "stealing"
anything headed for the subsystem and writing it to disk first before sending
it on its way.) I've been recording external outputs since the Mac Plus and
MacRecorder (all those who remember then, sigh for your lost youth), but I'm
wondering if there's a way to record some real-time web streams when I'm out
for later listening. (Yeah, I'm talking about time-shifting Internet
radio...go figure.) Freeware, shareware, or commercial is fine, doesn't
matter.
I will cheerfully summarize for the list, if there's enough information.

Subject: Crucified by PostScript problems - Please Help!
In my office I have a venerable Laserwriter II NT which has given me
excellent service for nearly 10 years and a more recently acquired
second-hand Laserwriter 4/600 PS. About 18 months ago - coinciding roughly
with my move from System 7.5 to OS8.x - my ttempts at printing began to fail
with 'PostScript error' messages. At first this was sporadic but it
gradually grew in significance until now these PS errors have become a major
problem, significantly interfering with my work.
The following points are relevant:
(1) The errors occur with both printers, irrespective of whether one or the
other is connected to my Mac via a single printer cable or both are connected
simultaneously via one of those cables with little boxes at regular intervals
- I forget the technical term. This would suggest that the printers
themselves are not to blame.
(2) The errors have persisted through various versions of the MacOS from 8.1
through 8.6 up to 9.1 and several clean installs of each. This would suggest
that system or font problems are not to blame.
(3) The errors persisted when I replaced my original PPC 8200/120 with a G3
MiniTower suggesting that a hardware problem is not the cause.
(4) No improvement was noted when I gave PrintMonitor memory a significant
boost.
(5) The documents I print almost all originate in Word 5.1a or Word 98 -
although the problem also showed today when I tried to print text from
SimpleText and from a Web page in Explorer 5. With a few exceptions,
documents originating on my machine have a maximun of two fonts - usually
Times New Roman or Bookman with Symbol.
(6) The problem occurs with large documents and small, with pasted-in
graphics or none. Sometimes page-by-page printing helps, sometimes it
doesn't. Sometimes a document which printed sucessfully on an earlier
occasion now fails - sometimes the reverse happens.
I am now at my wit's end and the considerable time wasted around printing is
eating into my productivity. I will be eternally grateful to anyone who can
give me a handle on this infuriating problem.

Subject: Epson & iMac
I am trying to run an Epson Perfection 1240u scanner (TWAIN 5.00A)
on a tray-loader iMac (OS 9.1). The machine imports the TWAIN 5 through
Photoshop 6, but as soon as it runs a Preview of the bed, the iMac locks
up. I checked the Epson site and it seems there are updates out for
Windows, but not yet for iMac. Has anyone else seen this problem? Epson
has not responded yet. Thanks in advance.

Subject: G4 freezes on boot-up
We just got 27 second-generation G4s in our lab and I have noticed
they tend to freeze up upon boot-up. Sometimes when I press the power
button on the monitor, the computer will power up, but it won't boot-up -
not even a gray screen on the monitor. Once this happens, I press the
reset button and then it boots up fine. Seems to be randomly and
irregularly common around the room. Could this be a firmware problem?

Hi all,
I am the proud owner of a new TiBook (after 11 years away from the
Mac) and I miss a great utility I used to have "way back when". The
utility used to allow me to click and hold the mouse over a folder- I
would then get a pop-up menu of all items in that folder- including
other folders, which I could select to get hierarchical menus of all
items (including all folders) within that folder.
The (I hope obvious) advantage here was that you didn't have to open
(and then close) all the enclosing folders to get to something (or
click on the triangles to show them in the other Finder mode) and it
made it really easy to scan through a hierarchy quickly, going up and
down and in and out of any folder.
So, my question is: do any of you know of any utility that would do
that for me in MacOS 9.x?

P.S. - I know about the 1.5 click to get the magnifying glass to
spring open folders. Unfortunately, this does not give me the
possibility of going back up the hierarchy once I've scanned the open
folder and not found what I was looking for.

the computer is checking the installed ram at bootup
the more ram you have the longer it will take
you can turn off this feature by cmd-opt doubleclicking
the memory controlpanel

Sounds like the memory test. To disable it -
With the Command and the Option keys held down, open the Memory
control panel. This will allow you the extra option, Startup Memory
Tests, the bottom test. Select the OFF box. That should make a big
difference.

Your machine is doing a RAM integrity check. If you are running 8.1
or 9.x, you can hold the option and apple (command) keys down while
opening the Memory Control Panel, you'll find a new option "Startup
Memory Tests". Click the Off radio button and enjoy quicker startups.
Now for a question to the forum - does anyone know how to do the
equivalent function (disable startup memory tests) in OSX?
