Subject: 5400/200 RAM Question

I have a 5400/200 PowerMac. It came with 8 meg of RAM on the MB and a 16
meg DIMM in Dimm Slot #1 (24 meg total). I wanted to upgrade to OS 8.6,
so I recently bought a 64 meg DIMM, thinking I would put it in Slot #2,
thus having 88 meg of RAM: 8 on the MB, 16 in slot #1 and 64 in Slot #2.

Unfortunately, when I put the new DIMM in Slot #2 I rebooted and the
About This Macintosh window showed I only had 56 meg of physical memory.
I tried switching the DIMMs, putting the 64 in Slot #1 and the 16 in
Slot #2, but it still shows only 56 meg of physical RAM.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to reconfigure something on the MB (a
jumper or something) or in the OS (I did get 8.6 installed successfully
with the increased memory available)? The arithmetic shows that it is
only recognizing 64 minus 8, leaving 56. I think the new DIMM is
correct, as it has 64 meg clearly printed on it. Maybe there's a limit
if the two dimms are not the same size?

If anyone knows about this problem, or has any suggestions I'd
appreciate hearing from you, either through the digest or directly. I've
checked apple-specs and apple-history, but neither of them tells of a
unique problem with installing expanded RAM in this model.

Thanks,
Sam M. Hunter

7th Guest PPC Patch
Written April 16, 1995 by John Stephen

Disclaimer
______________________________________

This is an UNOFFICIAL patch for The 7th Guest . I am not an employee of
Virgin Games nor do
they have any idea that I have created this patch. This application has not
been tested
extensively and may have bugs or cause problems with The 7th Guest .
However, given that
The 7th Guest already has serious problems with Power Macintoshes, and
given that I havent
experienced any problems myself while playing a patched version of the game
on my Power
Macintosh, I dont believe there is any serious risk with using this
software.

______________________________________
What it does
______________________________________

This application fixes a Power Macintosh incompatibility with Virgin Games
The 7th Guest .
This fixes a random crashing problem which occurs while playing the game on
Power Macintosh
computers (ie - PowerMac 6100, 7100, or 8100). This crash is caused by a
bug in the part of the
games code which controls the mouse/cursor in the game and that bug is fixed
by this patch.

______________________________________
How to use it
______________________________________

You must have already installed The 7th Guest on your Macintosh before you
can use this
application to patch your game. This application can only patch the copy of
The 7th Guest
which is installed on your hard drive -- it can not patch the copy on the
CD-ROM (CD-ROMs cant
be modified).

Before using this application, make sure that any virus protection software

DragThing is the original dock designed to tidy up your Macintosh
desktop. Simply drag an application from the Finder onto an empty
square in a dock and then drag documents onto it as normal.
Click a docked application to launch it or bring it to the front.

In addition, the docks can contain files, folders, disks and servers,
and there is also an option to display the currently running processes
in a special dock.

Major new features in this version include:

* DragThing uses the native Quartz graphics of Mac OS 10.1 for an
improved Aqua appearance, including an option for translucent docks,
and anti-aliased icons.

* You can put the Trash back on the Desktop where it belongs
on Mac OS 10.1.

* You can bring all the windows of an application to the front
automatically when you switch to it, or by using a hot key.

* Improved hierarchical contents menus for folders, including
support for aliases.

* Greater control over how dock items are located, using a
combination of aliases and full paths.

* Support for "Super Get Info" by Bare Bones Software.

A full list of all the changes is here:

Haxial DiskCatalog is a utility for cataloging CDs, hard disks, folders,

disks without having to find them and insert them into your computer.
More importantly, you can search all of your disks at once (again without
having them in the computer), and DiskCatalog will display a list of all
the files found, and their location. When you're looking for a file and
you don't know where it is, this is much easier than manually searching
all your disks. DiskCatalog is designed to be very fast -- search
results usually appear instantly.

DiskCatalog is available for:
MacOS 9 or better (with CarbonLib 1.3.1+).

prevent the iPod from being the hit it deserves to be. Also in

Anyone know of an adapter that would allow you to use an older power

It would be simple to make one if I know where to buy those connectors.

Hi All,

Anyone know of a way to be able to watch DVDs with the Apple DVD
Player without the restrictions of only being able to switch between
regions 4 times? I know this kind of thing exists on Windoze (DVD
Genie which resets the number).

The other option, as I understand it, is to have 2 different programs

that is a solution, can anyone recommend a good second DVD player
other than Apple's?

Much TIA,

able to replace the application, but I still need the system files,
specifically the film LUT tables and any other files that would be in
the system file. Afga is of no help, since they no longer support
film recorders, and the place they refer me to wants big bucks for a

bitmap Picts. Can anyone out there help me and my art students? I
can prove I have the original disks, so there is no copyright issue
being violated, Afga has just washed their hands of the whole
business.

I have a PB 1400 that recently developed a problem. It refuses to link to
any other computers or the router on my Ethernet network. I bought a new
PCMCIA ethernet card (Asante10mb card) and that doesn't work either. The
original card was a Dayna Communicard plus. The computer recognizes the card
when its software is loaded, the link light lights, and the data light

any other computer.

The PowerBook has system 8.6, and 32 megs of ram, the other computers have

clean install, Norton disk utilities, techtool pro, disk first aid, etc. all
show no problem. I tried the cards in another 1400, also no good.

Yes, you require the USB driver. There is a difference for pre 8.6 and OS
8.6Have a look at...

Subject: Software Update Crashes

I'm using a PowerPC 9600/MacOS 9.1 and and a G4 Cube/MacOS 9.2. Every time
I use Software Update on both these computers, the first file is downloaded
then installed and then the Software Update hangs/crashes the computer which
has to be hard-reset. Does this even with clean System installs. Can
anyone explain what the problem is?
