Subject: (Q) Modern disk defrag/optimization applications?

Hi all!

Has Alsoft's Disk Express application ever been updated for the
current Mac OS 9.1 and HFS+ disks? If not, any recommendations for a
good disk defrag/optimization application for use in a G4/HFS+
running OS 9.1?

Thanks!

Subject: [*] FileBuddy 6.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the FileBuddy package.

File Buddy is quite simply the most powerful and popular high-level file
utility available for your Macintosh.

File Buddy 6 requires a PowerPC-based Macintosh with System 7.6 or
later. File Buddy 5 is available for 68K Macintoshes.

*View and edit a wide range of file and folder information in the info
window.
*Create droplet applications that automatically apply changes to items
dropped on them, including the contents of folders.
*Find files and folders using an extensive set of search criteria.
Enhance file searches with plug-ins that extend file search capabilities.
Conveniently perform a wide variety of actions on found items. Make File
Buddy your default file finding application using the File Buddy CP
control panel.
*Modify the names of multiple files at once. For example, remove ".txt"
from the names of a group of files.
*Much, much more...

Changes & Fixes in this version:

*If in the process of copying files, a file cannot be copied, File
Buddy will offer the option to create an alias to the file which could
not be copied.
*The Rename file dialog now has an option to shorten names if
necessary.
*Multiple file renaming now offers a choice for replacing once or
multiple times so you can change names like "A file name with spaces" to
"A_file_name_with_spaces". Droplets have been updated to take advantage
of the change.
*Preferences folder checking now checks for temporary desktop database
files created when DVDs are mounted, and for large Remote Access log
files.
*With versions of the OS prior to OS 8.5, File Buddy now attempts to
use InternetConfig to open the help in your preferred browser.
*File Buddy would hang if a file in a file list was moved in the Finder
and then trashed from within File Buddy. Fixed.
*Fixed a few minor issues.

Subject: [*] Screen Catcher F-2.3.4 - French screen capture utility with"Catch-All"

Screen Catcher is a full-featured, scriptable screen capture
application. It is capable of taking snapshots of screen images and
saving them as PICT, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PNG, Photoshop, SGI,
MacPaint, TGA, and QuickTime files. It also allows images to be
captured to the clipboard or to Screen Catcher's own windows, where
they can manipulated to change the color palette or reduce the number
of colors in the image before copying or saving.

Screen Catcher also includes a "Catch-All" mode, which automatically
scrolls the contents of windows to capture an entire document or web
page, even if it's too long to fit on the screen.

Version 2.3.4 includes the following changes:
* Corrected a bug that caused BBEdit 6.1 to crash.
* Added additional scripting options to allow setting of size and
scaling parameters from AppleScript.

Changes in recent releases include:
* Added "send a snapshot" email support for Mulberry.
* Worked around a conflict with Kensington MouseWorks that could
cause buttons and controls in some dialog boxes to disappear.
* Fixed a bug that caused the AutoFile dialog to crash if the
format was previously set to GIF without interlacing.
* If the AutoFile folder is deleted, Screen Catcher will save
snapshots to the Desktop rather than complaining and then not
saving them.
* Screen Catcher can automatically attach pictures to email messages.
Use the "Send Mail" command in Screen Catcher's "File" menu.
* The filename in Save As dialogs is now initially selected without
the filename extension.
* Fixed a conflict with Chronos StickyBrain.
* Fixed a crash in Control Strip when window captures were done.
* Corrected problems in the Screen Catcher Extension which could
cause some applications to open very slowly.
* Eliminated a condition in which Screen Catcher could end up
running without any menus.

Additional information is available at:

Screen Catcher will operate on any Macintosh running System 7 or
higher, including Mac OS 9.1, and is $25 shareware.

Michael --

I think the book I used that was terrific was published by Peachpit
Press (they have a website) and it was for step by step -- tho for
Office 98 -- but should do fine for 2001. I also used Micrsofot's
PowerPoint Bible for the PC by Faith Wempen -- and it complemented the
other some -- and most things worked the same way on the MAC as on the
PC with the exception perhaps of doing EXCEL stuff in ppt -- but I can't remember.

Try the Peachpit book (their stuff is terrific -- I taught myself basic
Filemaker Pro and Power Point with their books). Let me know if you have
any questions or problems -- will be happy to share what I know.

Thanks for the tip. Your point is well taken and I should have tried that on
the machine in question. I had gone so far as to replace the extensions
involved, but did not boot from a different system on the same machine and
test that. However, I ultimately purchased a used FW port for this machine
from a vendor, installed it, and all has worked well since. Since it works
with the new port and not the old, I believe that in retrospect I have
serendipitously eliminated corrupt system resources or FW extensions as the
culprit in my case. Thanks again.
