Patent Grabber makes it easy to download U.S. patents for free from
public patent archives. Instead of going to the U.S. Patent &
Trademark Office web site and loading and printing patent pages one
at a time from your web browser, you simply give Patent Grabber a
list of patents and click "Get Patents." Patent Grabber then
downloads every page of all the patents to your Mac while you do
something else. And once the patents are downloaded, they are yours
to keep and print from Patent Grabber's special Library folder at any
time.

You can download the patents in either Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) or
TIFF format. In either case, if the patent was issued after 1975, you
automatically also receive the text of the patent in HTML format so
that you can copy and paste the text from your web browser into a
word processor, if desired.

Even though the public archives provide their patents as a number of
separate image files (one for each page of the patent), Patent
Grabber makes printing so seamless you will think that all the pages
of each patent were together in a single file. You can print as many
of the patents as you wish with just a click or two. Additionally,
for any individual patent, you can print just the pages that you want.

Patent Grabber requires a PowerPC Mac with System 8.6 or higher and
AppleScript, and should run under the Classic mode of OS X. To print
patents that are in TIFF format, Patent Grabber needs either Thorsten
Lemke's "GraphicConverter" or Blue Globe Software's "Tiff-Sight"
(Ver. 1.1 or higher). Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to print
patents that are in Acrobat (.pdf) format. To view and/or print the
text of a patent, you need a web browser.

Patent Grabber is initially in a free evaluation mode. In this mode
you can download the first five pages (and all of the text, if

QIF Convert converts Quicken Interchange Format (QIF) banking or
credit card transaction files, adding Quicken categories based on
the description of each transaction. It is useful for converting QIF
downloaded from online banking or credit card web sites before
importing them into Quicken. To convert a QIF file, just drop it
onto QIF Categories.

You can configure QIF Categories as a browser helper application for
files of type application/qif to have it invoked automatically on
downloaded QIF files.

QIF Convert converts each transaction in the QIF file by: 1)
Deleting any existing category, and adding a category associated
with the transaction's description; 2) Removing the plus sign from
transaction amounts (because not all versions of Quicken allow plus
signs); 3) Optionally adding an indication that the transaction has
cleared; 4) Optionally extracting a check number from the
description (unless the transaction already has a check number) and
using it as the check number that Quicken will recognize; 5)
Optionally changing the description and category to values
associated with the combination of the original description and the
amount; and 6) Optionally allowing you to confirm the transaction,
where the description and/or category can be changed, or the
transaction can be deleted. You have the option of store
transactions from one ore multiple accounts in the same output file.

Subject: iMac battery

A 3 month old iMac had its backup battery die. Its covered under the
warantee, but the tech said the battery died because the user after
shutting down the iMac would turn off the power strip t was plugged
into. Is this real? I don't think so. I can't figure out how it
would affect it.

Subject: Recording Streaming Audio

Does anyone know of software that permits one to directly record
streaming audio to disk? There are lots of software packages that
allow you to record to disk but the input selections are generally
limited to microphones, CDs, and the sort. The output of, say,
QuickTime Player or Real Player, can not be recorded directly. The
best I could do was to hang a microphone next to a speaker, but this
is clunky (and noisy). Thanks, Bull of Blacksburg.

Subject: Virtual PC Printing Problem

I run my business (Lizzy s Ice Cream) on Macs. When Intuit stopped upgrading
the Mac version of Quickbooks(QB), I installed Virtual PC(VPC) and migrated
to the Windows version of QB. I recently upgraded to VPC version 4 because I
wanted to take advantage of dynamically expanding drive images and the
claimed speed improvements. Since then I have encountered a major problem:
Printing from QB to my Laserwriter IIg via Appletalk over Ethernet
frequently results in a Postscript error that causes Postscript code to be
printed. Among other things, it means we can t print paychecks very easily.

Connectix s response is that this is a known problem and printing more than
5 pages via Print Spooling is unlikely to work. Kind of a major undocumented
shortcoming, don t you think? One tech support person told me that this
problem was exacerbated by small memory allocations. At his suggestion, I
increased the preferred memory for VPC and the Print Monitor, but this has
had no effect. I was also told that the only way to avoid using Print
Spooling was to have a dedicated printer connected, for example via USB.

This situation seems preposterous. I am surprised and disappointed in
Connectix. This problem did not exist on my configuration before I installed
VPC Version 4. This is clearly a bug, but Connectix doesn t seem to want to
deal with it. Has anyone else had to deal with this situation? Have you
found a way out, or do I have to drop back to VPC Version 2 (which is going
to be a major pain in the butt)?
