Subject: [*] "Verbs & Nouns" Sample Phrases 1.0 - language learning

'V&N Sample Phrases' is a sample collection of sentences for use with
English Inflection dictionaries (created with the Verbs & Nouns
language-learning program). This package is an easy way to try out the
'Phrase Engine' feature in Verbs & Nouns. You can extend this module by
adding more text-files to it.

To try out the module you should:

1. Make sure that the program Verbs & Nouns version 2.5.4 or later is
installed on your Hard Disk.

2. Download any of the following Verbs & Nouns Inflection Dictionaries:

- English Verbs 2.1 (or later),
- English Nouns 2.1 (or later),
- English Adjectives 2.1 (or later).

You can download any of these direct from the Info-Mac archives (the
Education/Language directory), or via links from this web site site:
. If you are downloading
especially in order to try the Phrase Engine, we recommend "English Verbs".
If you already have other English Inflection Dictionaries you can use them
instead.

Subject: [*] KnowledgeMiner 4.0 - Powerful Data-Mining Made Easy

Revolutionary learning and modeling tool that goes beyond neural nets by
using gmdh and analog complexing. It has the power to predict with an ease
and accuracy that is not available in any other software on any other
platform. Now Applescriptable.

What is KnowledgeMiner?
KnowledgeMiner is a data mining tool that enables anyone to use its unique
form of modeling to quickly visualize new possibilities. It is an artificial
intelligence tool designed to easily extract hidden knowledge from data. It
was built on the cybernetic principles of self-organization: Learning a
completely unknown relationship between output and input of any given system
in an evolutionary way from a very simple organization to an optimally
complex one.

Why choose KnowlegeMiner?
The main advantages of the inductive KnowledgeMiner approach are:

* Only minimal, uncertain a priori information about the system is
required. That means, even if you have no experience in modeling, data
analysis or designing a neural network you will be able to model, analyze
and predict complex relationships of nearly any kind of system.

* A very fast and effective learning process for a personal computer.
That means you can solve problems on your desktop in a reasonable time which
you may have never thought possible.

* Modeling short and noisy data samples. That means, you can deal with a
problem as is and don't have to construct artificial conditions for your
modeling method to get it work.

* Output of an optimally complex model. Generally you can be sure to get
a model at the end of the automated modeling process which can be expected
not to be overfitted. Overfitted models are not able to predict inherent
relationships between variables.

* Output of an analytical model as a transparent explanation component.
That means, you can evaluate the analytical model to explain the obtained
results immediately after modeling.

Subject: [*] Verbs & Nouns 2.5.4 - foreign language learning

'Verbs & Nouns' is an application for practising inflection, translation
and pronunciation at the level of single words. Features include the
opportunity to do various inflection exercises, and translation exercises in
both directions; to record and play sound for single words; to do
exercises based on sound or pictures; and to play various word-games.

The program keeps a record of exercises, and identifies the words that
the student has difficulty with. Along with the program, you need a
module for the target language concerned. The program can also be used
as an authoring tool to write your own modules of inflected words for
any language. A built-in 'inflection-generator' simplifies the addition
of these words. A 'Find' feature allows the modules to be used as
bilingual dictionaries.

Ready-made modules are already available for certain languages. You can

Subject: [Q] Mail App and compound criteria filters?

Is there any way to do compound criteria logic with the Mail App filters?

The MacOS X Mail App has filters but it appears to only deal with one
criteria. For example; if the "To" header contains "big bucks" then
do these actions.

Eudora and MailSmith allow for compound filter criteria, for example;
if the "To" header contains "big bucks" AND the body contains "jumbo
shrimp" then do these actions.

I know you can chain filters in Mail App but that doesn't help when
you want to filter with a tree of logic. For example;
"Subject" contains a "A" and a "B" then do action 1
"Subject" contains a "A" and a "C" then do action 2
"Subject" contains a "B" and a "C" then do action 3
Far as I can see there is no way to do something simple like that in Mail App.

Is there some way to do compound criteria filters in Mail App or is
this a one criteria filter mail client?

As an alternative, is there a way to have Mail App trigger an
AppleScript for each incoming email such that the AppleScript can do
compound criteria filters and then tell Mail App to do something with
that email that the normal filters can do?

Subject: [Q] SMC router/print server and lpr

I have an Apple Laserwriter Select 360 connected to a SMC7004ABR
(wired, not wireless) router/print server. The SMC has been updated
to v1.4.1.

The LW360 is a Postscript printer, so with the SMC printer server,
which handles lpr, it should be able to work with a Mac lpr client.

I can't get my PB400 (Pismo), running OS9.2.2, to print to the
printer using the lpr print option. Using the Desktop Printer Utility
I can set up the lpr client, and the printer can be verified at the
IP address of the router.

I get an error -8746 or something from the Finder when I try to print.

When I check the status of the SMC router, it says the printer is
ready, and the activity log shows a print job has been received.

I thought this would be a cheap way to keep using the LW360 with the
new generation Macs. It is a pretty rugged printer, but has only
parallel and Appletalk ports, no USB or Ethernet.

The Asante Ethernet/Appltalk converter box is more than the SMC
router, and doesn't do any of the router/firewall stuff.

Has anybody had any luck/experience using the printer server on the
SMC router with a Mac?

Subject: Connecting PLW to OS X

I have received a number of responses to my question about connecting
a Personal Laser Writer 320 to a G3 computer running OS X.
Here is the solution that works (& presumably would work for similar
printers/machine combinations):
The problem is NOT the driver but the fact that OS X does not support
serial devices using Apple Talk.
1 Get hold of an Ethernet to Serial converter (I am using Asant‰Talk)
2 Connect the converter to your printer's serial port and to an
Ethernet hub (I am assuming that you are using your E-net port on
your computer for high speed connection, if not, you can connect the
converter's Ethernet port to your computer dirrectly)
3 Re-configure OS X to route AppleTalk through Ethernet.
4 Re configure your printer panel (in the OS X Utilities
Folder). Actually now it should find your printer automaticaly & you
only need to confirm the selection.
This should not only provide you with the use of your AppleTalk
printer, but alow you to share it with anyone else who is connected
to your Ethernet hub.
The only problem I ran into was that the converter I am using is
touchy about being the last device starting up THE FIRST TIME it is
powered up. (Look up the trouble shooting page at the Asant‰ website
for a full remedy.)
Thank you for all the helpful responses.
