V&N Sample Phrases' is a sample collection of sentences for use with
English Inflection dictionaries (created with the Verbs & Nouns
language-learning program). This package is an easy way to try out the
'Phrase Engine' feature in Verbs & Nouns. You can extend this module by
adding more text-files to it.
To try out the module you should:
1. Make sure that the program Verbs & Nouns version 2.5.4 or later is
installed on your Hard Disk.
2. Download any of the following Verbs & Nouns Inflection Dictionaries:
- English Verbs 2.1 (or later),
- English Nouns 2.1 (or later),
- English Adjectives 2.1 (or later).

Changes and fixes in this version:
1. Attempting to set the creator of files in the orphaned file window
with the Change Creator... command (the last item in the button menu)
would cause a crash. Fixed.
2. At some point prior to v6.1.7, some of the libraries in the File
Buddy project had to be replaced, and the new ones were added in such a
way that the operating system thought File Buddy required the presence
of certain libraries which in fact are not required, but only used if
available. This prevented File Buddy from launching, producing a message
a message which said that "MenusLib" could not be found. This should no
longer happen, extending the supported systems back to 7.6 (again).
3. A search for orphaned files would not ignore the '????' creator, even
if it had been flagged to be ignored. Fixed.

This is a shell script, to be run in the Terminal in Mac OS X, which
provides an alternative to man. It will format the man page as a PDF and
open it in Aqua, allowing easy viewing, searching, and printing.
Requires that Ghostscript has been installed. Defaults to A4 paper (edit
it for US Letter) -- altering this might get added as an option in a
future release.

'Verbs & Nouns' is an application for practising inflection, translation
and pronunciation at the level of single words. Features include the
opportunity to do various inflection exercises, and translation exercises in
both directions; to record and play sound for single words; to do
exercises based on sound or pictures; and to play various word-games.
The program keeps a record of exercises, and identifies the words that
the student has difficulty with. Along with the program, you need a
module for the target language concerned. The program can also be used
as an authoring tool to write your own modules of inflected words for
any language. A built-in 'inflection-generator' simplifies the addition
of these words. A 'Find' feature allows the modules to be used as
bilingual dictionaries.

Word List Maker is a powerful and easy-to-use program, for generating
sorted word-lists of several kinds from one or more text files. It can
generate word-frequency lists, present the words in the reverse order of
letters, indicate the number of letters contained in each word, or sort

My guess would be a misbehaved USB device. Try hooking *ONLY* the
keyboard and mouse from a different (working) Mac. If it shuts down

You don't mention which system you're using, but the following advice
should work for any system using the Internet control panel. (I'm
clueless re: X).
Summon the Internet Control panel from the Apple Menu:Control Panels folder.
Choose the Advanced tab, then select File Mapping from the scrolling
icon list on the left.
You'll see a three-column list. Click on the left column to sort by
extension, then drag the scroll elevator around half-way down. You're
looking for the extension ".pdf". When you find it, click once to
select it, then click the Change button.
There's a search for applications that can open PDF files, then a
dialog box titled "Change Mapping" appears. Click on the "Show
Advanced Options" button. In the lower right hand corner, there's a
popup list thats labelled "Handled By." It currently reads
"Processing with application".
This is what you change.
Select "Saving to file" in that popup list. The "Change" button
highlights. Click it and you're done!

Acrobat 5 installed a plug-in for you in Explorer and changed the
settings to use it.
You may change that back:
In Internet Explorer Preferences for Receiving files/ File Helpers:
Scroll down to pdf and press "change...".
Under Handling: Choose "Post-process with Application" and set
Acrobat Reader to be the application.

Hi Mike,
You set this in File Mapping. I believe that MSIE honors the Internet
Control Panel's settings (I don't currently use it), so open that
first. Then, click the Advanced tab. In the icon list on the left,
choose File Mapping. Choose the entry for .pdf click change. At the
bottom of the new window is a button to Show Advanced Options. Once
you click there, it widens the panel. hold down the mouse on
"Processing with Application" and switch to "saving file".

file, Explorer opens Acrobat and opens the file.
This is very annoying and time consuming.
I would like to return to having Explorer automatically download PDF
files in the background.
(If I know I am about to hit a PDF link then I can use the right
mouse button to save to disk. However, most of the time I do not know
that the link is connected to a PDF document.)
I have looked over the settings in Exporer and in Acrobat, but I
cannot find the one to make the documents automatically download in
the background.
Can someone out there help me??

A big thanks to those who wrote in with suggestions!
Most people suggested that I change the Advance Settings in the
Internet Control Panel. This did not help, even after I changed all
extensions that use Acrobat to "Save to File".
The culprit was something called "PDFviewer", described as a Netscape
Plugin, which was sitting in the Internet Plug-ins folder in the
system folder.
Once I got rid of that, Explorer did not recognize PDFs and asked me
if I wanted to save the file to disk. The resulting file was
recognized as a PDF by the system.

Take a look at "SetextView" by Christian Swinehart
. Check for
downloading information.
SetextView has a nice Cocoa look-and-feel, and is a great substitute
for EasyView. There are limitations to SetextView: every file to be
added to a Library must have ".etx" appended, and the documentation
is incomplete. And sadly, I must report that SetextView is pretty
buggy -- for instance, the "------> NEW" arrows that TidBITS uses in
its sections will crash SetextView every time. I have learned to edit
TidBITS digests before adding them to my TidBITS Library.
All in all, though, I like SetextView tremendously, and owe thanks to
Mr. Swinehart for bringing it to us in all its Cocoa glory.

I like the program too to view Tidbits. However, the development of Easy
View have been stopped a while ago. Last version is 2.6.2. Since Easy View
uses setext, it is kind of special. Adam Engst could provice much more
details about Easy View.

Subject: Printing to a LW Select 360 through a SMC Barricade
I'm using a Barricade SMC7004ABR router/print server to allow small
networking with an iMac, an old PowerMac 7200, a LW Select 360 and
a ASDL internet link.
It works fine, except for the print server. Reset is not done the proper
way on
the Select 360. The first job prints normally, but for any further jobs,
you have
to wait the 300 seconds default timeout or to hard reset the printer.
Result is the same using OS-8.1 (from the PM7200), OS-9.2 and OS-X, as
well as using direct shell command with the Unix Terminal. However, using
shell command and allowing burst page banner printing makes reset ok
(banner printing setting is not available through OS-X and anyway, I
don't
want to waste paper).
Any idea how to achieve a reset through normal printing processus ? No
support from SMC : the Barricade is sold as a multi OS switch-router with
a Windows print server. They don't want to support print server for Mac
or
Linux users. No support from Apple too. It's not Apple hardware.

Hello Doug,
I've encountered similar problems with a Word98 document containing
equations (from Equation Editor).
On saving, Word was pretending that the disk with lots of free GB was
full. Trying to outrageously increase Words memory wouldn't help. I
finally found out that one single corrupt equation in the document
was causing this misbehavior. Removing it and retyping it from
scratch remedied the issue. (Just don't ask me how the equation got
"corrupt"...)
Do you have non-text objects in your document? Try to remove them,
group-wise or one by one, to see if that removes your problem.
