BarFly is an abc music processor. abc is a music description language which
was invented by Chris Walshaw, and originally used for folk music, but has
now developed to the point where it can be used for any music.
BarFly is a text processor which can display abc files in staff notation
and play them using Quicktime Musical Instruments.
BarFly is a Classic Mac application ( a version for OS X is in the works).
BarFly requires only system 7 or later, Quicktime v2.1 or later, and a machine
with Color Quickdraw, so it will run on very old Macs.

playability and feel of the glorious 8-bit consoles on the

SwitchRes is a little utility that will allow you to switch the
resolution of all your monitors . You can access to all the resolutions
of all your displays in a simple, customizable menu. SwitchRes
incorporates features from the Monitor Resolution, Monitor BitDepth, and
Video Mirroring Control Strip Modules bundled with your system. You can
use its menu in the Menu Bar, use its provided Control Strip Module, or
click on the Finder Desktop with its Contextual Menu Plugin.
SwitchRes has an extensive list of features:
* You can show and use all available resolutions of your video card,
not just those limited by your monitor. For example, 20 video modes are
available on my PowerMac 7300 internal video board. Enjoy your Apple 15"
monitor in 1024 x 768, or 640 x 480 in 120Hz !
* SwitchRes is totally configurable. You can define which resolutions
are really accessible, and which will require a confirmation.
* You can also create display sets which will allow you to change the
resolution and the depth of all your monitors with just one mouse click,
or just one key. With this new version, you can add scripts to display
sets. That gives SwitchRes the ability to launch a script with just one
key, or when an application is launched...
* You can assign a specific set to an application , so that every time
you use this application, your Mac will automatically switch to your
predefined resolutions. You will find this extremely useful for most
games.
* You can save the position of the icons and the windows on your
desktop, independently from one resolution to the other, unlike the
Finder. The configuration is restored at startup.
* You can script SwitchRes for resolutions and color depth changes.

Subject: [Q] Firewire PCI card for Power Tower
I have a Power Computing Power Tower 225 which is running OS 8.6. (I
haven't wanted/needed to check compatibility with OS 9.x, but am open
to opinions.) Recently, I installed a DLink DSB-500 USB PCI card and
after downloading the USB patch from Apple, it works fine. Feeling
lucky (and having the CD drive die and a Firewire external handy), I
installed the DLink DFW-500 Firewire PCI card and downloaded the
Firewire 2.3.3 patch from Apple. Unfortunately, the Apple System
Profiler tells me there is an unidentified card in the PCI slot (it
correctly identifies the USB card) and a CD inserted in the drive
does not mount. The DFW box says compatible with OS 8.6, but the
DLink people (while helpful) know nothing about Macs. Any
suggestions from the assembled wisdom out there?

Subject: ADDRESS BOOK WANTED
I recently had a major disk crash and even with two and a half hours
of Apple's help, ended up having to re-initialize my disk. I am back
up running Mac OS 9.0.4 on a G4.
Unfortunately, I could not find my backup of a recent version of
AddressBook, a utility by Jim Leitch & Jim Smith, that I used for
years. I have a large file of addresses and the older backed-up
version (4.2) that I did find in my backups cannot open my file of
addresses. I cannot find a recent version on the internet or in
VersionTracker or macupdate. E-mail to the above is bounced.
If anyone has a copy of a more recent version (than 4.2) would you email it to
me as an attachment?

Subject: connecting Personal Laserwriter 320 to an iBook
How can I connect a Personal Laserwriter 320 to an iBook (last series
- all white) via USB?
The products I checked (Keyspan & Belkin) seems to be not compatible
with the Personal 320 model, and the Stealth Serial Port seems to
don't be good for the iBook.
I need to connect it via usb, because i use the ethernet for an adsl
internet connection.
I'll promise to summarize all the answers and post them back to the
list, as I've done in the past.
