DockDisks is a hack that causes disks to auto-mount in the Dock. This
can be handy if you want to put your dock on the right side of the
screen but want to avoid the conflict for space with the disk icons on
the desktop. It can also help avoid the problem of desktop icons
becoming covered up by open windows.

DockDisks is a hack, and as such it is obviously not perfect. The main
caveat is that the Dock is quit and relaunched when the list of disks is
refreshed, because the Dock has no API for adding/removing items, and
thus has to be relaunched to refresh its settings. However, DockDisks
does do its job, which is to put your disks in the dock.

- Can be set to automatically launch at login
- Automatically mounts disks when they are inserted
- Automatically unmounts disks when they are ejected
- Automatically ejects removable disks and servers when they are
dragged off of the dock
- Allows the user to choose whether to display fixed disks, removable

- Allows the user to choose the area of the dock in which the disks
will appear.

windows and you can't see them? Sure, Stickies is free, but
FloatingNotes "floats" on top of all other application windows so you
can always see them. FloatingNotes uses no system extension, and best of
all, FloatingNotes is a Carbon application so it works under OS X as
well!

FloatingNotes automatically saves all open notes when you quit. To
delete a note, simply close the window.

FloatingNotes requires OS X, or OS 8.5 or 9 and CarbonLib 1.3 or later.

Pacifist is an application which allows you to extract individual files
out of .pkg installer packages, similar to the way the old TomeViewer
let you open Tome files under Mac OS 9.
Here is a list of Pacifist's current features:

- Lets you install individual items or folders from .pkg packages,
either to their default install location or to a custom location you
specify.
- Follows all symlinks properly, instead of overwriting them like
Installer.app does
- Doesn't mess with existing folders, including their permissions
- Correctly gives the sizes of a package, both compressed and
uncompressed, instead of always saying 100 MB like Installer.app does
- Displays total size of currently selected files, letting you know
exactly how much space your installation will take on your hard disk.
Dynamically updates this size as the selection changes.
- Automatically converts AppleDouble files into resource forks and
metadata when installing on HFS+ disks (leaves the files alone if
installing on UFS)
- Automatically updates prebinding information after installation to
optimize system performance
- Multiple document interface
- Multi-threaded
- Has a working search feature
- Fixes a few of Apple's omissions in NSOutlineView, so command-left
arrow and command-right arrow to collapse and expand items work, as does
auto filename completion

- By default, prompts before replacing any files
- Uses the Security Framework if the files will need to be installed as
root
- If you install a folder and the folder already exists, Pacifist
installs the folder's contents and doesn't overwrite the parent folder.
The exception is .app bundles, which by default will ask you what to do.
- The buffer used when piping to pax is configurable, unlike
command-line gzip, so you can tweak it to get faster decompression with
gz-compressed packages
- Most features can be turned off via preferences if you wish

Intro
You are asked to build a harbour for a town near the Atlantic ocean. The
location is near the routes between Europe and America, so chances are good
to get some shipping companies to use the harbour. You and your compagnions
found a firm, the "SimHarbour Building and Construction Society" (SBCS) and
with a starting capital of 200.000 from the City Council the work begin.

Playing SimHarbour
In the beginning there is water. Start the harbour from any side, but
remember that the ocean is to the north, all floods, hurricans etc. will
come from there. Use the tools to add piers, cranes and warehouses. Use the
tool button with the little boat to set your company boat. Click on the boat
for a popup with more items; you may use Shift-Arrowkeys to sail the boat.
Make use of the Shift- and Optionkey with each tool; Shift-Lighthouse will
bring a green one etc.

Tip: Start it small, one pier with cranes and some warehouses should do
fine.
Soon the first ships will make use of your harbour. Small ships will come
to simple piers, larger one need cranes and storeroom. Be sure to keep
enough storeroom for the incomming ships. Oiltankers need Tanks, Cargo Ships
warehouses etc. The message box will bring you information about the
companies needs. Building houses like Fire Stations, Emergency Departements
and Shipyards will raise the quality of your harbour and will attract more
ships to come. After every year you will get a detailed report about income
and expenses (not to forget taxes). Use the statistical and financial
charts to get informed about what is going on. Read the newspapers about the
newest developments in the shipping world. Mr. Faraday, Mr. Goddard, Mr
Marconi and Mr. Mendel from the SBCS will give you advice if needed, Mr.
Pasteur speaks for the shipping firms and their interests.

Problem: educational software installation returns the error message
"An objection of class NilObject Exception was not handled." I don't
know what that means.

Platform: Someone else's iMac. Probably OS 9.2 or X. Installation
worked okay on mine.

Is there a software conflict? Should he try installing with all
extensions off? Or is something else the matter? Mysteries!

Subject: Netscape 6.2.2 still not ready for prime time

I dowloaded Netscape 6.2.2 earlier this week and gave it a spin.

The good news is that it now longer causes my MacOS to crash within
minutes of being loaded and it works with some websites (such as my
bank) that it didn't work with before...

The bad news is a peculiar interaction with Default Folder that
causes Microsoft Office 2001 applications to have trouble loading or
behaving nicely. It also wants to trash Default Folder's preferences
file (or cause an error claiming the preferences are trashed when
they are not).

It doesn't work correctly with Webfree (the only useful advertising
banner blocker I've found so far). Webfree works, but with Netscape
6, WebCT becomes unreachable (with Netscape 4.7, I do have to turn
off the "block the following tags" feature in order to use WebCT, but
that's not much trouble at all.

Netscape 6 also is a horror of a RAM hog. It wants twice the RAM of
version 4.7.

I'm using MacOS 8.6 on a G3 at home. I've got 9.2 running at the
office on a G4. I haven't really had a chance to run Netscape 6
through it's paces at the office. It's conceivable that I can solve
some of the problems by upgrading my OS at home.

What have your experiences been with Netscape 6.2.2? I do have IE 5,
but I prefer Netscape (when I can get it to work!).

Subject: Share Win2000 external HD with Mac

I am trying to find a way to share an 80MB Firewire HD between a PC
and a Mac so that I can conveniently move file between the PC and
Mac. This is especially important when I have files with very long
file names on Win2000 and want to move them to Mac OS X without
losing the names.

I formatted the disk in NTFS. I then removed it from the PC and
plugged it into the Mac. Mac OS 9 saw the disk but did not recognize
the format and suggested I format the disk.

I formatted a 32 MB primary partition in Fat32. I then removed it
from the PC and plugged it into the Mac. Mac OS 9 recognized and
mounted the 32MB partition.

I then formatted the remaining HD into an extended partition, one
32MB and one 10MB Fat32 logical disks. I then removed it from the PC
and plugged it into the Mac. The Mac did not mount anything on the
desktop (not even the 32MB primary partition that I saw previously).
The Apple System Profiler did see 3 Firewire devices.

How should I prepare a HD so that I can see the whole disk both from
a Mac and from a PC?

How will this be affected by OS X and by WinXP?

Regarding transfer of files with long names from Win2000 to Mac OS X:
I can do it with ZIPs, not with CDs, not via a Novell network (since
it seems to work through OS 9). The Mac and PC are physically close
and both are connected to the same ethernet network (the PC is on a
Novell server).

There is a bundle with two support, one for home and one for the road.

The purpose of the support is to put the portable computer (either Mac or
PC) at an angle so air flows under it.

A somewhat drier solution is to raise the TiBook off the table ever so
slightly, I put mine on metal rails about 1/4" and it runs much cooler.
There is also a $230 rack for the TiBook and iBook, but that seems to be a
bit overkill
