Think twice before playing a new audio CD in your Mac. Adam looks
at how music labels are treating consumers like criminals by
deliberately creating corrupt audio discs that can gum up your
Mac. Also in this issue, Matt Neuburg positions Layout Master
as a worthy addition to a webmaster's toolbox. We also drool
over Apple's upcoming Xserve rack-mounted server, and note the
releases of speed-bumped iBooks, PopChar X, and Now Up-to-Date &

While engaged in this exploration, pre-readers progressively learn to
recognize the letters on the screen and type them on the keyboard.
Eventually, they also learn to associate letters and words with their
sounds.

Beginner mode lets toddlers start learning as soon as they can bang on a
keyboard.

The game is currently available in English, French and Spanish, with
additional Language Packs to be added soon.

This is my attempt at a free, AppleScript Studio dice-roller for RPG
games. The main reason I programmed this was a lack of satisfaction from
existing dice-rollers. You can enter the number of dice, number of
sides, and put in an optional bonus, and this program will roll the dice
for you; there's also a "memory" feature where you can save/restore
values for the number of dice, sides, bonus, and result. You may also
optionally drop the lowest die (and/or the highest one).

This program *requires* Mac OS 10.1.

Web Confidential 3.0.5 for Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 - Japanese version

Web Confidential is the most powerful password manager on the Mac today.
It organizes passwords and protects them with industrial strength
encryption. It is also available for Windows and Palm operating systems.

"Version 3 is the best release of Web Confidential so far. It runs fully
native on Mac OS X and Mac OS 9. I never thought that I could port
Shared Menus to Mac OS X, but thanks to Apple's outstanding support
of the Component Manager on Mac OS X, it proofed possible. This means
that thanks to Shared Menus, you have access to your passwords via
a Shared Menu right in your browser's menu bar.", said Alco Blom.

These are the main features of Web Confidential for Mac:

Encryption : Industrial strength encryption (using BlowFish)
Automation : Automatic entry of WWW Forms and automatic HTTP Authentication
Integration : Access to your passwords in your browser and from the Dock
Synchronization : Synchronization with your Palm via a Conduit
Cross-platform : Binary compatible with Web Confidential for Windows

This version includes the new version of WC for Palm with a conduit for Mac OS X
and resolves a problem with garbled text when synchronizing between Palm and
desktop versions,

Web Confidential is shareware.

Requirements: Mac OS X or Mac OS 9.

What it is: Tool to check, optimize and upload your web pages
Author: Ton Brand
Company: Tonbrand Software
License: Shareware USD 22.00
Computer: PowerPC, iMac or iBook
Mac OSX: 10.1 or later
Abstract:
Web Site Maestro is the first HTML optimizer for Mac OS X! It's a useful
tool for those who update their web site(s) regularly, especially for
professional web masters with large sites. But it's also very valuable for
the amateur with a smaller web site who wants to make sure that his or her
site is always in top condition.
It checks your web pages for dangling tags, missing attributes and broken
links, and - most importantly - it makes your pages load faster by
optimizing both HTML and script code.
The program features Smart Handling which means that only the pages that you
have changed are processed, i.e checked and/or optimized.
Web Site Maestro helps you keep organized by creating a duplicate site
folder for the optimized files. An added benefit is that it leaves your
original files untouched.
Uploading your optimized pages to a remote server is done with one
mouseclick.
Drag and drop is supported.
Web Site Maestro comes in four version types; Mac Classic - PPC and 68K, Mac
OS X and Windows. The program is shareware and costs USD 22.00 for a Single
User license.

Murph Sewall isn't the only one, alas. I am a longtime user of Netscape,

9.1. One annoying thing is how slow Netscape is to load. The worst is
that at least half the time when I try to pull down the bookmarks menu it
crashes. I have tried trashing as many of the Netscape files I can find and
reinstalling the program, but that doesn't help either. If you send a
message to their support address you'll get a canned reply "Thanks for your
suggestion." I am running 4.7 at home and it never gives me a problem. I
also run the OS X version on my powerbook and it seems more stable.

I'm sure everyone knows the problem: I get forwarded email, jokes, etc.,
with about 14 carats (>>>>...) in front of each line, along with
multiple carriage returns, thus breaking up the lines of text in the
middle, etc.

Is there a standalone shareware program that can clean this mess up? I
have used ungarbleit, but it requires using Oneclick as an extension,
and that interferes with some other extensions, etc. It seems to crash
with more than normal frequency if using OS 9.x. Anyway, I'd rather use
a simple text editor than can be configured to simply remove the
offending characters and returns.

When I attempt to write a CD with my iMac (refurbished 500mhz indigo) it

following error message: There was a problem with the target device
Error code -7932.

If I then restart the iMac with the blank CD in the slot it asks me to
name the CD while it's starting up. It will then write the CD with no error.

In other words, the blank CD must be in the drive when the iMac starts
up for it to write properly. Inserting the blank CD after the iMac has
been running for a while will not work.

What's going on? Do I have a warranty problem, or am I just doing
something wrong?

Answer: Joliet Volume Access is very helpful with Windows CD. LONG names can
be seen on the CD when transfered to the Mac. It is shareware but not
expensive at 15$ US. Without it, you will see truncated names only.

ORIGINAL COMMENT: Regarding transfer of files with long names from Win2000
to Mac OS X:
I can do it with ZIPs, not with CDs, not via a Novell network (since
it seems to work through OS 9). The Mac and PC are physically close
and both are connected to the same ethernet network (the PC is on a
Novell server).

Thanks in advance for your advice!!
