I would try opening them with BBEdit, there is BBEdit Light which is free and
you can dowload it from or
just look for the right page or directory, if
you don't have the comercial version.

Not sure what they are but BBEdit will open anything and if it can display it
as text it will do so. :-}

Castle Wolfenstein 5.1
For Wolfenstein 3D

Castle Wolfenstein is a 55-level scenario for Wolfenstein 3D (the old one,
not Return to Castle Wolfenstein). From the creator of other fine scenarios
such as First Strike and Temple of Doom, Castle Wolfenstein is probably the
most challenging scenario you will ever play. You will encounter ghosts,
vicious corporals, and the dreaded ENRON EXECUTIVES! Requires the full
version of Wolfenstein 3D.

Version 5.1 includes a new ending and several major bug fixes.

3D, visit my web site at geocities.com/alvon_del_camio.

Subject: [*] CDFinder 3.6.2 for Mac OS 8.6 - Mac OS X

CDFinder is a very fast and powerful tool to catalog your hard
disks, CD-ROMs, DVDs, floppies, ZIPs and anything else that spins.
It has a great user interface and very useful search functions.
CDFinder supports drag&drop and requires a PowerPC CPU.
While System 8.6 is required, CDFinder is also fully compatible to
MacOS 9.2.2 and Mac OS X.
A special feature is the multi-lingual user interface
(German/French/English/Italian/Swedish/Spanish/Chinese).

Together with CDWinder 1.6 for Windows,
this is a special cross platform, network solution to catalog disks
and CD-ROMs on a Macintosh and a PC.

The new version can be obtained from the CDFinder home page
.

A single user license of CDFinder is $25, multi user licenses are available.

New in CDFinder 3.6.2:

- CDFinder now handles Mac OS X application packages (Mac OS 9.0 or
newer).

- A new language added to the user interface: Spanish!

- The Audio-CD settings have a new option that allows CDFinder to
access any other freedb server.

- A new Eject menu can eject volumes directly from inside CDFinder.

- All files whose name starts with a period are now declared invisible.

- A few minor bugs have been fixed, regarding the display and
renaming catalog files.

This version requires Mac OS 8.6 and CarbonLib 1.1 or newer.

settings include text justification (left, center, right, full), space
above, space below, left indent, right indent, first line indent (or
hanging outdent), and bottom border (in one of several line styles).
Each paragraph can also have its own line spacing (in one point
increments) and dominant text direction (useful for right-to-left
scripts).

Version 4.3.0b3

* Added "Clear Menu" command to clear the "Open Recent" submenu.
* Added scriptable switch in the prefs dialog to toggle Quartz anti-aliasing.
* Read and write RTF documents.
* OS X Services enabled (in the Tex-Edit Plus menu).
* Quartz anti-aliased text enabled (requires OS 10.1.5 or greater).
* New character styles added (All Caps, All Lowercase, Hidden).
* Click at the left margin to select a line, double click the left
margin to select a paragraph.
* Improved tab efficiency. The "Real Tabs" menu item has been
eliminated, since tabs are always enabled.
* Various minor internal performance enhancements and bug fixes.
* Downgrade alert--> The "Show Invisibles" command will show "hidden"
text, but it no longer shows non-printing characters (CR, FF, Tab,
space). This hopefully will be corrected in a future version of the text engine.
* Fixed script bug involving the "close window saving yes" command.
* Fixed bug noted after editing iDisk files. (Tex-Edit would ask to
mount iDisk at incorrect times.)

Subject: [*] Virtual Composer version 3.2

Virtual Composer is a graphical multichannel musical compiler, sequencer
and analyzer, designed for perfect execution of complex polyphonic music
using QuickTime's Musical Architecture. It is mainly intended for
serious performers who want to simulate human-like performances or who
wish to manipulate musical scores in ways similar to those when
performing live. Playing is effected via QuickTime's internal Musical
Instruments synthesizers so you don't need MIDI cables or external
devices and all upsampling and downsampling is done automatically via
QuickTime. The application provides a very extensive set of global and
local music controllers for volume and staccato as well as unique
acceleration/deceleration facilities, making possible humanlike
performance simulations. The program provides the ideal environment for
analyzing musical scores with powerful search facilities, including
naive, intervalic and rhythmic searches, with passive (score) and active
(channel) transpose facilities, with a quick Fast Fourier Transform
facility and a Statistics facility. The above facilities can be used to
completely disassemble the inherent structure of any musical score and
to identify various correlations between different pieces or even
between different channels of the same piece. An extensive set of
examples is provided, with emphasis on the music of J.S.Bach.

There are two possibilites that might help, use a BASIC compiler that does
work on the Mac, there is RealBASIC and there is FutureBASIC.

This will woprk on 68k Macs and PPC [but not under OS X], and it is free.

[TextToMac 1.32]

TextToMac is a utility program for Macintosh computers. It converts the
end-of-line
code of text files between Macintosh, MS-DOS PC, and UNIX formats. These
computers use different codes to indicate the end of each line. Macintosh
uses "CR
(0x0D)", MS-DOS PC "CR+LF (0x0D0A)", and UNIX "LF (0x0A)".

+++ How to Use +++
Just drag & drop the file you want to convert to the TextToMac icon.
First, you set the default way conversion method for each file type (from
Macintosh/MS-DOS/UNIX to Macintosh/MS-DOS/UNIX). When you drag & drop a file,
the program recognizes its type and, voila, you get the converted file.

+++ How to Setup +++

First, double-click the TextToMac icon. The Setup dialog box appears. The Setup
dialog box also appears if you drag & drop while pressing the Option key.

There are four things you have to setup.

+How to Convert? (Conversion Method)
TextToMac reads the content of the dropped file and tries to find an
end-of-line code.
It recognizes the file type by looking at the form of the end-of-line code.
Here you
should set up which type of text file should be converted to which type. For
example,
Macintosh -> UNIX
means that the program will convert a text file with the Mac-type end-of-line
code to
a file with UNIX-type.

+Where to save the converted file?
You set how to define the folder for saving the converted file. Choose from the
following three.
1. Show "Save as" dialog
The program displays the standard "Save as" dialog box for each of
the dropped
files. You set the folder (and the name) each time.
2. Save to the same folder as original
Save the converted file into the same folder as the original, with a
different
name. The new name will be the original name plus an extension
(suffix). The
program alerts you if a file with the same name already exists.
3. Overwrite original file
The program overwrites the original without changing the name. The
alert
message will appear. You can disable this alert by unchecking the box
below this
option.

+What extension should be added?
Set the extension to be added to the original file name. Each file type
should have a
different extension. If you choose the option 3 written above, the setting
will be
ignored.

+The type of the creator for the converted files
The finder launches an application according to the "creator name" written in
the
document file. Here you set the application program you want to launch when you
double-click the icon of the converted text file.Click "Set" and the standard
dialog box
appears. Select the program you want to use and click "Open". You can also
directly
type the Creator name.

+About Fast convert option
In case "Fast Convert" is checked, the conversion will become little bit
faster.
With this option, TextToMac omit to draw the progress bar and to check user
interrup
during one file is processed. So, this option is only effect to large text
file conversion.

+About Convert Folder option
In case "Convert Folder" is checked, you can drag and drop folder onto
TextToMac in order
to convert all TEXT files inside the folder. If you do not want convert
folder inside
dropped folder recursively, uncheck "Convert Subfolder" option.

+++ Miscellaneous +++

The end-of-line codes are the following.
Macintosh ..... CR (0x0D)
MS-DOS ........ CR+LF (0x0D0A)
UNIX .......... LF (0x0A)
If TextToMac doesn't find these codes in the dropped file, it does nothing, .

The Setup dialog box also appears if you drag & drop while pressing the
Option key. If
you click "Save" after changing the preferences, the program saves the new
preferences and then converts the files. If you click "Temp", the program
converts
the files according to the new temporary setup but does not save it.

Access PC may hang up when you copy a file with more than one extensions (e.g.
"Test.c.dos") to a DOS floppy. TextToMac is likely to generate such a file,
so be
careful!

Laurence:

I didn't notice any response to your query in InfoMac V19 #48 about an
index for National Geographic. Here are three lines of attack that
occurred to me:

1. You said that "Windows versions are available, but none for the Mac."

Isn't it easy to read a Windows file on the Mac, perhaps with the help of
MacLink Plus (which used to come with every Mac in former times), and have
MacLink Plus convert it to a format directly readable on a Mac? If the
Windows file was written in Microsoft Word, shouldn't you be able to read
it on a Mac using an appropriate version of Word for Mac?

2. The library at my place of work sent out a note about three years ago
that read, in part:

"Every issue of the famous National Geographic magazine from 1888
through 1997 is now available at [our] Research Library.
The CD allows easy searching through more than 180,000 spectacular
photographs and over 9,300 articles. Every page, map and advertisement
that has appeared in National Geographic over the past 109 years is
included. More than 500 foldout maps that have accompanied the
magazine are also available on CDROM."

I don't know where the library obtained this CDROM (would you like me to
ask?), but I assume it came from the National Geographic Society itself
since it has the full texts, photos, maps, and even the ads. So, if this
CDROM is in the proper format to be read on a Mac, wouldn't this serve your
purposes? And if it were not in Mac-readable format, perhaps a friend with
a PC and a CD writer could make a copy for you in a Mac-readable format.

3. A National Geographic enthusiast published this note in InfoMac V15 #26:

"Date: Fri, 31 Jan 1997 00:17:16 -0500
From: (Edoardo Milotti) milotti@trieste.infn.it
Subject: [*] National Geographic Index

"Do you own a collection of old National Geographic Magazines? Have you ever
tried to find that nice article that you barely remember and which would be
quite useful right now, but you don't know how to dig it out of the
collection?

"The yearly index (published since 1983) does not help very much, because
the titles of the articles are quite imaginative but rarely contain the
keywords that let you find out what you need. For instance, how could you
tell that the article "Oldest Known Shipwreck" deals with an archaeological
find in Turkey? (You can find it in the December '87 issue at page 693)

"I have copied (with scanner and OCR SW) all the yearly indices since 1983
and have added a handful of keywords (not already in the title itself), so
that the resulting list may be searched with a text editor (e.g. with the
Find and Find All utilities in BBEDIT). The structure of the list is quite
obvious, and the records contain the title, the page number and the
keywords.

"My choice of keywords is quite personal, it may be wrong and is certainly
incomplete. Let me know of any mistake that you find in the list.

"If you like this edited index please send me a postcard.

"Greetings to all the lovers of the National Geographic Magazine.

I just checked the Info-Mac Hyperarchive at MIT, but couldn't find the file
submitted by Mr. Milotti. However, I did download it in 1997 and still
have the corresponding .sit file on my hard drive. Let me know if you want
a copy by email. If so, please make it clear which of the two addresses
you list is the one I should use.

There are several files that one can download to enable you to play most of
the .avi files. These files go in the Extensions folder:

Indeo½ Video
Indeo½ Video 4
Indeo½ Video 5
Intel Raw Video
msvc decompressor

I am not sure if there are any more or not just look for Indeo½ Video X,
where X is some number. These are the codex files that QT needs to enable you
to play the .avi files.

Note that there are some .avi files for which there is no Mac codex
available, these can't be played on the Mac, you may have some of these.

Hi,

I've been using KeyQuencer 1.2.2 for ages and have recently switched to OS
X. A visit to Binary Software (which sells this program) shows that the site
hasn't been updated for several years and an e-mail to Alessandro Levi Montalcini
(KeyQuencer's creator) has produced no reply, leading me to believe that the
program will never see Carbon much less Cocoa.

I deeply miss my macros, especially with AppleWorks 6, and will have to switch
to some other program. Users of QuicKeys are not too happy with it right now
(although not necessarily for reasons to do with the program's operation itself)
, so I am looking at alternatives.

Aside from AppleScript, which I have been promising to learn for several years
now, are there other programs that anyone might recommend?
