Subject: PB (Wallstreet) stopped showing desktop photo
After trying more fruitless things (trashing Mac OS Prefs, System Prefs,
QuickTime Prefs; running Norton Disk Doctor), I found the apparent culprit.
I had run the QuickTime Updater earlier the same day before the
Appearance control panel quit displaying the desktop photo. It had
downloaded a file named QuickTime JPEG Update (ver. 5.0.4, Nov 5, 2001,
according to Get Info) into the QuickTime Extensions folder in the
Extensions folder. Removing it and rebooting cured the problem.
The clue was Slide Freebie was no longer able to display JPEG images,
but could still show GIFs, and was afflicted around the same time
Appearance stopped working correctly.

now that Apple's removed the power button from the Apple Pro Keyboard?
This was always one of the most elegant things about the Mac OS...
