Interested in the future of content in a digital world? Join us in
an experiment into the direct valuation of information. Adam also
offers techniques for circumventing areas in which iPhoto's
simplicity makes it clumsy. Then we look at the new Power Mac G4s
and minor eMac changes, plus an update to Retrospect Client.
Finally, we have an update on last week's article on the fate of
the digital hub concept in the wake of Hollywood protectionism.

Subject: [*] Digital Diary 3.0.3

Digital Diary Works the Way You Do to Easily Keep Track of all the Important
Decisions and Activities on all your Projects

Digital Diary allows fingertip access to the activity history and current
status of any project, with the added ability to view all activities on all
projects on any particular day. On a complex project, there could be a
dozen or more separate issues being dealt with simultaneously, each with its
own distinct status and decision stream. Digital Diary helps keep track of
all this by providing a convenient way of recording and automatically
organizing this information. While most personal information managers focus
on scheduling and contacts management, Digital Diary focuses on keeping an
organized record of your activities and decisions, allowing you quick and
easy retrieval of a project's history. Versatile report generation can
organize your data in any manner you choose.

Here are a Few of the Many Uses of Digital Diary:

Business, Sales, and Consulting:
Ñ Project activities and decisions
Ñ Upcoming deadlines, meetings, and appointments
Ñ Telephone and meeting records
Ñ Discussions with suppliers, consultants, clients and co-workers
Ñ Decisions made and communicated to clients, co-workers, and subordinates
Ñ Directions received from clients, authorities, and management
Ñ Decision / activity 'streams' relating to issues within a project
Academic and Scientific:
Ñ Experiment progress notes
Ñ On-going research projects
Educational:
Ñ Individual student progress diary
Home and Personal:
Ñ Personal projects and hobbies
Ñ Special events (weddings, holidays, family reunions, etc.)

Some Unsolicited Comments from Users:

"I have just used Digital Diary. It's so wonderful. I have been searching

DropDMG is the easiest way to create ".dmg" and ".img" disk images on
Mac OS X. It can encrypt images and post-process them with GZip or
MacBinary. It also supports segmented images and images that auto-open
when you mount them. All the options are available from AppleScript.
DropDMG is robust and has no trouble handling folders with spaces,
quotation marks, dollar signs, or other "special" characters. It even
works without Mac OS X's optional "BSD Subsystem" installation. Full
documentation is included in PDF and Apple Help formats.

New in this Version:

- Fixed several bugs in 1.7. See the release notes for details.

Subject: [*] FileBuddy 7.2.2J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the FileBuddy package.

File Buddy is quite simply the best utility available for working with
files and folders on your Macintosh. First released more than nine years
ago, it has been continually enhanced, improved, and supported since
that time.

File Buddy 7 requires a PowerPC-based Macintosh with Mac OS X or Mac OS 9
and CarbonLib 1.5 or later.

File Buddy 6 requires a PowerPC-based Macintosh with System 7.6 or
later.

File Buddy 5 is available for 68K Macintoshes.

* View and edit a wide range of file and folder information in the info window.
* Create droplet applications that automatically apply changes to items
dropped on them, including the contents of folders.
* Find files and folders using an extensive set of search criteria.
Enhance file searches with plug-ins that extend file search
capabilities. Conveniently perform a wide variety of actions on found
items. Make File Buddy your default file finding application using the
File Buddy CP control panel.
* Use the Rename window to modify the names of multiple files at once.
For example, remove ".txt" from the names of a group of files. Replace
characters in multiple names.
* Use contextual menus to accomplish many tasks in a single step.
* Create custom icons: from PICTs on the clipboard; from the contents
of graphics files and, with Mac OS X, PDF files; from other icons; for
folders using a variety of templates; with blank icons; using only small
icons. View complete icon families with the icon family viewer.
* Create aliases.
* Find empty files and folders, orphaned files, duplicate files, broken
aliases, and unused preference files.
* Automatically repair broken aliases
* Move, delete, and copy files. Even copy invisible files and use the
Replace Different option to skip copying files that already exist.
* Delete data and resource forks from files.
* Erase files, entire folders, and unused disk space to avoid
unauthorized recovery of deleted files.
* Create snapshots that can be used to track the changes on a disk,
such as files installed by an installer. Use snapshots to uninstall
applications.

Subject: [*] MacPipes X 1.0.1

MacPipes is a classic arcade puzzle in which you have to build a
pipeline of required length connecting pipe parts within a time limit.
The new version of MacPipes requires a PowerPC processor and runs on
Mac OS 8.6/9.x with CarbonLib and natively on Mac OS X. Since it is a
complete rewriting of the original game, I decided to add a 'X' to
the name and restart version numbering from 1.0.0

System requirements: PowerPC processor, Mac OS 8.6 or later.
For Mac OS 8.6 and 9.x only: 3 MBytes free memory, CarbonLib 1.1 or
later, Sound Manager 3.0 or later.

Recommended configuration: Mac OS X 10.1 or later.

What's new in MacPipes 1.0.1

* Fixed a bug that caused some items in the Apple and Application
menu to appear in Italian on Mac OS X. This happened bacause the
default country code for the application was erroneously set to Italy
(4). Now it is set to USA (0).
* The registered user name was not shown immediately in the title
screen after entering the registration code. Fixed.
* On Classic Mac OS only all animations are stopped when tracking
the menubar to avoid drawing over the menu (this bug does not affect
Mac OS X).
* The game now pauses when the main window is collapsed (or
'docked' on Mac OS X).
* The main window position is now saved when quitting and
restored when starting the game application.
* A few small bug fixes and code improvements.
* Added a question about "one-way" pipe segments to the FAQ file.

Subject: [*] UNO 2.1.1

UNO is a game for two or more players in which the object is to get rid of
all your cards before your opponent does. If you are the first player to go
out, you are awarded the point values of all the cards still held by other
players. The first player to reach a certain number of points (usually 500)
wins.

UNO uses a special deck of 108 cards that features number cards (0 through
9) and word cards. Word cards cause special actions when played (such as
reversing the direction of play or causing an opponent to pick up cards and
lose a turn). Each card in the deck belongs to one of four colors: Red,
Green, Blue, and Yellow (colors are analogous to suits in a standard deck of
cards) - except for wild cards, which have no specific color. A legal play
essentially involves matching the color, number, or word of the previously
played card.

UNO features:
* 2-4 player action
* a variety of options to tailor game play and appearance
* save/load game capability
* on-line help, including detailed description of the rules of play
* tracking of your win percentage

Changes in version 2.1.1:
On the Mac OS X platform, Options are now accessed via the
Preferences menu item in the Application menu.
Fixed a bug where, under certain conditions, the first
player in a new game would incorrectly lose a turn.

Changes in version 2.1:
Control over the message font.
Control over the mouse click between turns.
New game option: OK to play Wild Draw Four card anytime? Normally, a
Wild Draw Four card can only be played if you don't have any cards that
match the color of the discard (see Rules). By turning this option on, you
eliminate that restriction so that you can play a Wild Draw Four card
anytime.
New game option: Players must keep picking up until they have a card to
play? This option affects the rules for picking up cards from the deck.
Normally, if you have a card that you can play, you must play it - you can't
pick up from the deck. If you don't have a playable card, you pick up ONE
card from the deck - if you can't play this card, your turn ends. When this
option is turned on, you can pick up cards from the deck even if you have a
card that you can play. You can keep picking up cards until you have a card
that you want to play. You must play a card to end your turn.

I know this is not what you asked but if you are going to get a
firewall I suggest you get a hardware firewall, something like the
Sonic Systems SoHo firewall. With a software firewall you never know
if your machine has been compromised and your firewall disabled. With
a hardware firewall, odds are slim that some kind of virus or hacker
is going to gain control of it and turn it off.

Since you say you are running 8.6 and not Mac OS X, I'd say don't
bother with a firewall. Just turn off all incoming connections, Guest
access in file sharing, that kind of thing.

The Classic Mac OS is pretty secure. Mac OS X is unix and in my
opinion it is way more secure than Windows but not as secure as the
Classic Mac OS.

It's a good idea not to use the main mail address in newsgroups and
archived lists like the info-mac. Either get some "disposable"
addresses (like from yahoo, hotmail, and other free services). If you
are in the lucky situation to have access to an own mail server -
such as I am - you can also create an "alias" to the real address and
change this from time to time. If you look at my address here, I use
. christian is the real mailbox name,
and rumantsch.ch is the real domain. The numerals 020626 indicate
that this alias has been created on the 26th of June 2002, and after
two or three months, this gets changed to another sequence. The
frequency of these changes depends on how much spams comes in.

Hope this helps. Best wishes, Christian.

Have you tried copying the file to your hard drive and then attempting to
open the file?

Subject: Net Connection OS X + USB

I am having a devil of a time trying to solve an Internet Connect problem in
Mac OS X.1.5:

I am able to connect to my ISP and get through authentication using my
NetMod ISDN terminal device via the USB with all the latest relevant scripts
and software, however whenever I try to do anything like retrieve mail or
connect to a website, I get the error message that the specified server
cannot be found. And Internet Connect soon after logs me off saying that
there is no response from the other computer.

If I switch over to OS 9.2.2, I have no problem connecting using the
identical connections and hardware, so obviously the problem is OS
X-related. Is this a firewall issue that I need to fix or what? Any advice
will be greatly appreciated.

Are you running OS9.2 or lower?

Turn off guest file sharing, or file sharing altogether if you don't use
it, and be done with it.

At that point your mac is invulnerable.

A firewall for a Mac is simply a waste of money on snake oil products.

There are no services to be hacked on a Mac running a classic OS.

If you're running OSX and aren't allowing FTP, telnet or ssh logins to
your computer (which is how it comes configured, you would have had to
deliberately enable this) keep up with the security patches, and the
firewall built into OSX will do just fine.

You can download Brickhouse, for a GUI interface to run it.

Two suggestions. First, if you have more than one computer, then get
a router. Recommend Asante 3400 series. I have one and it works
great. Second, if you only have one computer, then recommend
Sustainable Softworks IPNetSentry . I put
it on my daughters' computers when they were in college. Highly
recommend it. However, it's only OS 7.6.1 thru 9.x. For OS X, there
is IPNetSentryX, which is in beta, that acts as a GUI front end to
the UNIX firewall build into X. Good luck.

I would suggest SoundExtractor 1.3.1 by Alberto Ricci
