Subject: [*] FilterTop 1.1 Public Beta

TopSoft, Inc., a NON-PROFIT organization made up of Macintosh developers
from all around the world, has been working on a collaborative endeavor
called "FilterTop," a new breed of Macintosh utility.

FilterTop is an application that allows files to be processed through a
series of "filtering" operations. These operations are provided via
plug-in modules and are configured by the user via a graphical
interface.

This is the "promotional" public beta version of FilterTop 1.1, a free
product of TopSoft, Inc. This version is fully functional. However, it
may not be the latest version.

For more information on FilterTop and details on how to obtain the most
current version, visit TopSoft's web site at ,
or email .

System Requirements:

Any Macintosh computer (except Macintosh 128K, Macintosh 512Ke,
Macintosh Plus, Macintosh SE, Macintosh Portable, PowerBook 100, Macintosh
Classic) running System 7.0 or later. The A/UX and Mac OS X "Classic"
environments are also supported.

FilterTop uses the Thread Manager, which is built-in for System 7.5 and
later, but requires a separate installation for older Systems.

FilterTop does not require the Appearance Manager (built-in for Mac OS
8.0 and later), nor does it require Navigation Services (built-in for
Mac OS 8.5 and later), but will take advantage of these features if
available (separate installations are required for older Systems).

The accompanying FTWindow Carbon application requires CarbonLib (which
requires Mac OS 8.6 or later). Older versions of FTWindow that support
older Systems are available separately in the "FilterTop 1.1 PB Extras"
package. Debug versions of FilterTop require System 7.5 and later.

Disk space required for FilterTop is approximately 2 to 4 MB; available
free memory required is 1 MB minimum, 2 MB or more memory is
recommended.

Subject: [Q] freezes on G4 dual processor

I have a 500 Mhz G4 dual processor running OS 9.1. It freezes on the
order of once a day. The computer is used by everyone in the family,
so besides the Microsoft Office applications and various browsers,
frequent applications include AOL Instant Messenger, the Apple CD
Audio Player, and a variety of games (Warcraft, Unreal Tournament,
Diablo). I have often blamed the games and "other things" people did
without thinking because the machine seemed more stable when everyone
else was off visiting Grandma. Now I'm wondering about the 3rd party
memory I have in the machine. When I check the System Profiler, it
gives me the following memory info:

size memory type
---- -----------
64 PC100-322S
512 PC100-222S
256 PC100-222S

The 64 MB DIMM was the Apple original. What is the difference
between the 322 and 222 memory, and is it a problem? I assumed the
order I put the memory in didn't matter. Is this true?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello!

First, what I have:
G4
OS 9.1
16 GB free on drive
256 RAM
virtual memory on
USB connection through port 3 of a four-port hub

I just bought an Epson scanner 640U. I have Omnipage Pro ver 7, which
Epson says is supported by this scanner. But in order to use it, I must
get to the Scan Assistant for the scanner, and I can't.

Specifically:
I open "smart panel"
All the options work EXCEPT "scan to ocr", which of course is the one
I need.
And I am stuck.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice.
I do not have a "Language" kit installed.
Autovirus protection was off during installation.

Epson/Newsoft, online, in guides, or in tech support are absolutely
WORTHLESS.

Before I take the scanner back, any ideas that I could try?

TIA!

Subject: Reading Toast Cds on Windows Machines

I recently acquired an ACOMDATA CD writer. One of the uses I plan for
it is to burn CDs for friends and relatives who use Windows
computers. My problem is this:

When I use the "Write Session" mode a Windows machine (I have only
tested on one computer which uses Windows 98) only "sees" the last
session. I wrote a CD with two sessions and Windows 98 only
displayed the second session. On a suggestion I wrote a third session
(identical to the first except for folder title) using the "Write CD"
mode, Windows 98 saw the last session fine, but the other two
sessions were nowhere to be found. I am using Toast Light 5.0.1 and
writing with the "Mac OS Extended and PC" format. Needless to say all
of the sessions show up just fine when I mount the CD on my Macs. In
using Windows 98, after loading the CD I looked under the Icon "My
Computer" which showed the "C Drive"(the internal hard drive), "D
Drive" (A Zip drive), and "E Drive" which is the last session
recorded on the CD.

Of course I can always write CDs all at once when the target is a
Windows computer, but any help with this mystery would be greatly
appreciated.

TidBITS#612/14-Jan-02

The new iMac and iPhoto dominated last week's Macworld Expo, but
those weren't the only interesting things at the show. In this
issue we offer an overview of the show, plus our superlatives for
products and companies that caught our attention. Also, Adam peers

of his iBook) to prognosticate on what 2002 will likely bring.
Finally, Judge Motz rejects the proposed Microsoft civil
settlement.
