Subject: [*] Colibricks: new version 1.5.1 for MacOS 8,9,X

Colibricks version 1.5.1 now lets you start playing at any level
and also includes various other minor changes

Colibricks is an exciting brick game for the Macintosh. It is
native for MacOS X, but includes a version for MacOS 8/9 too.
The goal of the game is to destroy all bricks using one or more
balls. Unlike other brick games, it features accurate ball
behaviour, using very precise physical laws. Balls bounce off
corners correctly, and even bounce with each other. And instead
of boring horizontal grids, Colibricks features rotated bricks,
even making circles and spirals with them. Graphics are
antialiased with beautiful backgrounds.
Of course, it's also a lot of fun. With special kinds of bricks
that activate special effects or spawn prize balloons. Balls can
grow or shrink to any size.
The demo lets you play 6 levels of various difficulties. After
registering, you'll get access to all 50 levels and you'll be
able to use the level editor.

System requirements:
PowerPC processor with at least 200 MHz (includes any iMac)
MacOS 8, 9 or X.

Subject: [*] DragThing 4.5.1

DragThing is the original dock designed to tidy up your Macintosh desktop.
Simply drag an application from the Finder onto an empty square in a dock
and then drag documents onto it as normal. Click a docked application to
launch it or bring it to the front.

In addition, the docks can contain files, folders, disks and servers, and
there are also options to display the currently running processes, and all
mounted disks, in special docks. On Mac OS X, you can even show the Trash on
the Finder Desktop again.

This is a minor maintenance release to fix a bug that could cause problems
when converting preferences files from older versions of DragThing.

Otherwise it is identical to the recent 4.5 version which included the
following new features:

* You can now turn docks into sliding drawers that work like pop-up
windows from Mac OS 9.
* Improved support for Mac OS X "Jaguar".
* More cool translucency effects.
* Added an option to highlight Classic applications in docks.
* Added support for Mac OS X applications with "????" creator codes.
* Added a "Revert" command for the preferences file in case of accidents.
* Folder contextual menus can go more than five levels deep on Jaguar.
* Added new hot keys to control individual docks.
* Added support for custom sounds on Mac OS X.
* Added an option to sort the Disk Dock into the same order as the Desktop.
* Improved performance.

DragThing is designed for Mac OS X, but still works well on Mac OS 9.

This is a free upgrade for existing registered users of DragThing 4,
$10 for registered users of previous versions, and $25 for new users.
Five and ten-packs of licenses cost $99 and $149 respectively, and
competitive upgrades are also available from other utilities for $19.

Subject: Switching between applications: OS X

In System 9 I could switch between open applications with my mouse by
heading up to the upper right hand corner and choosing the
application I wanted from the menu of open application. The control
panel TaskMenuBar made this even easier without taking up valuable
desktop space (like some of the commercial docks).

In OS X we have the Dock, which either takes up valuable desktop real
estate or, if you hide it, seems to take too long to pop up and, on
the other hand, is popping up when you do not need it. In any event,
since I use it to launch applications, it is too full to be of use to
switch directly to the application I want using the mouse.

I see something similar hiding under the APPLE (RECENT ITEMS), but I
still need to navigate to get to the list of applications.

I DO NOT want to CMD-TAB between applications.

Is there any way I can get the old "one click direct switching"
functionality back into Mac OS?

Thanks!

Subject: Time Prefs?? WTF!?? (No, NOT Date and Time Preferences)

I still have and use my 7100, as a second computer and with an
accelerator card in it. A while back, I used it to connect to
FileMaker Server up in the server room, and FileMaker reported back
that the date format in use on the local machine did not match that
being used by Server, did I want the log to use system defaults or
use the local machine settings, blah blah blah...I glance at the menu
bar and, sure enough, it is reporting the time as 9:2:7 followed
shortly by 9:2:8.

A quick journey to Date and Time Control Panel fixes nothing,
settings are default except for displaying seconds. Hmm, the Date
and Time Preferences must be hosed, I think to myself, so I dig them
out of Preferences and trash them. Later on I reboot. Problem
hasn't fixed itself. I'm in a hurry so I leave it.

So yesterday I go at it again. Open Date and Time CP, select
"Custom", try to force it to use normal "6:07:04 PM" nomenclature, no
joy. Try other settings: Australian; 24 hour; etc; nope, I've still
got this weird format where single-digit minutes have no leading
zeros and no AM/PM (despite being in 12-hour mode). Trash the Date
and Time Preferences again and reboot. STILL not fixed. I open the
Preferences folder and root around in it and find a file, blank icon,
named "Time Prefs". Time Prefs??? OK.... I trash it and reboot.
The time is 5:14:03 PM, very nice.

So this morning I dig the file "Time Prefs" out of the trash can and
inspect it. It is not of type "pref", but then a few other prefs
files aren't either. It is, in fact, of type "ReEg", and the creator
code is "aLw$". I do a Sherlock search for other files of the same
creator and find a duplicate copy of the same file in the old MacOS
8.1 System Folder which is on a different drive. Hmm, and 8.6 was
installed on top of a clone of 8.1, so that's probably where the file
came from. Hmm again, 8.1 in turn was installed on top of a clone of
7.6 and I still have that old System Folder on a partition too. But
no "Time Prefs" under 7.6.

System 7.6, in fact, uses the same Date and Time Control Panel that 8
and 9 use (give or take a version increment and some additional
synchronization features and whatnot). I can't recall EVER having
had a standalone Time control panel...so what is this thing?
Creation and Modification Dates are identical: 3/3/98.

File Type and Creator Database I go to doesn't have any listing for
the type or the creator code. I pry the file open with BBEdit and
the file contains only this string: 2971765482. ResEdit says it has
no resource fork, so that's the entire file.

Alta Vista and Google only bring me pages written in other languages
in which "reeg" or "alw" are found.

Mysteriouser and mysteriouser!

All right, what *IS* this file and how did it get in my Preference
folder, and why does MacOS 9 pay attention to it?

Subject: time? export iMovie to iDVD

A friend is working on a 40 minute imovie for me. He said that his computer
was working most of the day exporting to iDVD. He selected the export to
iDVD option. I read somewhere else that it should only take the same time
as the movie to do this. Does this sound right that it took so long?

2nd question- when the computer finished exporting, he couldn't find the
exported file. Where should he look?
