Our organization is going through a re-configuration of IP addressing,
and the address for SUMEX-AIM will change.

'Formulae 1' is a fast and compact Computer Algebra System
originally designed to run on a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant).
The program is only about 80k bytes long (including the Mac
overhead of ~31k bytes). Dynamic memory consumption is also
minimum. 'Formulae 1' features :
- Fast automatic simplification of expressions containing
symbols and functions.
- Graphical display of expressions with support for special
functions drawing (derivatives, integrals, square roots, etc)
and the Greek alphabet.
- Dynamically extensible Mathematics Knowledge.
This release of 'Formulae 1' contains a command line interface
but a future release will sport a more Mac-like User Interface.

Version 2.0
A number of changes have gone into the program since the last release.
The most significant changes are the addition of custom grades and of
attendence recording. Several minor bugs and annoyances reported by
teachers were also corrected.
Freeware
Eagle GradeBook is free. However, if you use it please send me a
postcard. Knowing the program is being used inspires me to keep it
up to date. I also am willing to consider suggestions for improvement.
Introduction
Eagle GradeBook is written for school teachers to track a class of
students. The basic functions of the program are to record attendence,
record assignments and grades, compute student grades, and produce
reports. A spreadsheet is used as the primary method of entering and
maintaining data. The objective was to make the spreadsheet look much
like the ones used in typical grade books. There are over a dozen
different reports available. I have attempted to make the interface
as friendly as possible and hope it is intuitive.
Grades may be entered using a letter grade, points, pass/fail, or
plus, check, minus. You may also define your own letter grades.
Calculation of grades may use a straight average, even average, or
weighted average.
Since posting the Eagle GradeBook program I have heard from teachers
in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The program has been
used from elementary school through college.

Here is HC/HT Help, a DocMaker stand-alone. This is information
giving help with HyperCard and HyperTalk. It replaces my earlier
HyperCard Help, but the only difference is that the earlier version
was created with a different app, Misebirakesu, which turned out
not to work on every machine, whereas DocMaker is more robust
and better supported.
I use this as my primary reference for HyperCard and HyperTalk
information when my memory fails me. Sections on Hidden HyperCard
Features, Reserved Words, Messages, Properties, Functions, and
more. Often explains things more clearly or more correctly than
the official documentation (IMHO).

Here is MacCurveFit 1.0.8 which is the final revision of MacCurveFit 1.0.
(Version 1.1 is due for release next month.)
MacCurveFit is a scientific least squares curve fitting program. Data sets can
be entered into a spreadsheet window or imported from programs like Excel or
extracted from text files. Arbitrary equations may then be fitted to the data
and displayed graphically. The equations can be defined by typing them as text
and so the program is very flexible. There is also a choice of mathematical
algorithms that can be used for curve fitting.

family of personal digital assistants adds a US area code lookup database.
While the Newton supports dialing telephone numbers, it doesn't have a way
to tell just where that number is located. nAreaCodes provides this
answer. A user simply enters the area code and nAreaCodes provides the
location covered by the found area code.

Requirements: System 7.0 or higher
This finds any kind of root. You enter the kind of root square, cube,
fourth etc... in the first box and the number in the second than hit the
button. If the number has a perfect root it is displayed. If it doesn't
have a perfect root the program displays a decimal approximation
and a reduced version of the root if applicable. In the reduced
version the Apple sign stands for the appropriate root. So if you
asked it to find the 3rd root of 54 the program would display 3
'apple sign' 2 meaning 3 times the cube root of 2.
This program is based on a similar program I wrote called Square
Root Finder which does the same thing for square roots only. If you
are only interested in Square Roots I would advise you to find that
program as it is easier to use and has more features like negative
numbers. Anyway have fun fooling around with this program. It's
free and if you have any questions e-mail or mail me.

Outland TCP Tool

The Outland TCP Tool is a connection tool for the Communications Toolbox. It
uses the MacTCP driver to communicate over TCP/IP networks. The tool
supports synchronous and asynchronous open, close, listen, read, and write.
This is not a Telnet tool! If you want to connect to the Telnet port, 23,
you are probably not going to have much luck. The Outland TCP Tool provides
a raw TCP connection only.
In the settings dialog, you can enter an IP address and port number. If you
are using the tool to open a connection, the address and port number are of
the TCP port you are connecting to. If you are using the tool to listen for
an incoming connection, the address is ignored (it is always the local
machine), and the port is the port number to listen on. The port number 0
has a special meaning to the MacTCP driver; using it is not recommended.
You may be freely copy and use this tool for personal, non-commercial
activities. For all other uses, contact Outland.

Please add the following file to the sumex library:
Did it ever happen to you that you update a modified picture in
a Quark document and boom! it looses some of it's attributes like
position, scale, etc.? well, if it did, this XTension is for you.
And if it didn't happen, you still need this XTension, because it
is just a matter of time before it does.
PictXPrep is an XTension ($20) for QuarkXPress versions 3.2 and
higher. PictXPrep is a utility which scans a document on open, save
or print, and automatically updates all the modified pictures,
keeping their original attributes. PictXPrep(tm) also allows for
manual selection and update of either all pictures in the current
spread or just selected ones, without going through the
"Picture Usage" menu.

Printer Defaults is an application to modify the default settings in
printer drivers and similar Chooser documents such as print-to-fax and
print-to-document drivers.
In version 1.3.1 of Printer Defaults the additional options dialog for
LaserWriter 8.x has been modified to work with an alpha release of
LaserWriter 8.2 included on the 1994 World Wide Developer's Conference
CD. There is no guarantee that it will work correctly with the final
version of 8.2. It also adds an option to hide the Setup button in
LaserWriter 7.2 and includes some untested postscript files intended

I have had good success with MightyMenus from Night Light Software.
MightyMenus is the successor to AutoMenus or AutoMenus II (from Michael
Conrad.) I haven't seen the demo version of MightyMenus on any of the

Well now, for problem #1, I'd recommend checking youor Date & Time Control
Panel. It allows you to choose the formats thhat your date and time appear
in.
This CP might even be corrupted which could be the cause of your problem. Try
replacing it with a clean copy.
As for your Excel problem, see how you have your dates formatted. If the
format makes the entry too wide for the column, you'll get this "########"
notation. Highlight the column, choose Format, Column Width, and Best Fit to
have the column expand to fit the widest entry.

A silly question (related to System 7.5, but if you are a Launcher user on
a Performa you might be able to answer this).
In the latest MacUser on page 80 in an article about System 7.5 there is a
picture of the Launcher. It has the usual collection of icons for several
graphics apps. This is fine I understand how to add icons to the Launcher.
But along the top of the window there is a set of "puffy" buttons called
"Applications", "Layout", and "Graphics". It looks like each of these
puttons when pressed shows a different set of icons. This seems like a neat
feature but I can't figure out how to set it up!
How does one set up these buttons? From the complete lack of UI to this
control panel I am at a lack to figure out how to do this!
I'm running System 7.5 beta 6.

Subject: [A]: Mac SE Internal Hard Disk Broken...
Hmm, those 40 meggers. While I was consulting at school a couple of years
ago, we had a rash of these problems (SE's with 40meg HDs that wouldn't spin
up). It turns out to be a problem of "stiction" (pronounced stick-shun)
Enough grit and grime build up on the head of the drive that the weak drive
motor could not overcome the friction between the head and the disk. The
motors were developed to have just enough "umph" to get the drive moving,
when an extra little friction is involved it didn't work. Of course, the
friction coefficient lowers when the drive is moving, so once it gets going
there's no problem.
For a while Apple was replacing these drives free of charge if their serial
number fell in a certain range. Talk to your local repair shop or Apple's
800 line. I believe there was a time limit on when you could return these,
but I could be mistaken.
The only useful thing we could do was to get the drive spinning long enough
to copy off all the important data. The user could then get the drive
replaced and we would replace their data. This was only necessary, because
Apple would not do any data recovery.
If you want to get it moving again, the basic idea is to jolt the drive
while it's powered up (I know that sounds bad) to get it spinning. Yes, I
basically mean whack the front of the machine or drop it an inch or two. In
the worst cases, we would take the case off, remove the drive from it's
bracket, then power up the machine. In this state, you can then quickly
twist the drive around it's shortest axis to sort of jump-start the spinning
process. Be sure you're connected to a network or an external HD so you can
copy this data off when you do it.
As far as I know, there's no fixing such a drive, it may be time to invest
in a new one.

I've had good success with this process. There may be other ways, but this
seems to work just fine:
You'll need:
- Quicktime
- a Quicktime player (like Apple's MoviePlayer or SimplePlayer)
- the foriegn file extensions for the CD-ROM (These come with Apple's CD-ROM
software)
- the freeware app, Sound2Movies (which converts Quicktime movie audio
tracks to System 7 sounds and back)
1) Using the Quicktime player open the audio track you want to convert. In
MoviePlayer you can select any subsection of the track to save rather than
the whole thing (which would be quite large).
2) Open the quicktime movie you just created with Sound2Movies and convert
it to a sound.
There you are! If you need it in another format (as I did) use Norman
Franke's freeware SoundApp 1.2.1. You can then convert it to AIFF, NeXT, or
Windows WAVE file.
My Windows machine at work now beeps with the "Indigo" sound thanks to this
process. It also starts up with a sound containing the first seconds of a
Queen song which I created with this process.

One of my colleagues here is an historian specializing in the writing of John
Calvin. He is preparing a 'critical edition' of some of Calvin's writings in
the original Latin and would be greatly aided by the ability to spell check in
Latin. Preferred word processors are WriteNow or ClarisWorks, but a Latin
spell-checker for any program would be worth his while to get even if he only
runs the 'final draft' through a friend's copy of the program once.
Please write if you know of a Latin spell-check module for any wp.
Please write if you are interested in having such a thing yourself.
If the worst comes to the worst, we could build one up by taking a text that
has been checked, highlighting the whole thing and hitting WriteNow's 'Add to
Dictionary' button to add the whole lot at once. But this would result in an
incomplete dictionary... and Latin being a dead language, it would be possible
to make a complete and virtually authoritative one.
I'll be away for most of August (-net withdrawal!-), but I shall reply on my
return.

Well, perhaps the digest which contained it got lost somewhere, but
recently I posted an application which performs that task to info-mac.
You can find it under snd/util/grab-audio-11.hqx.
All you need is an Apple CD300 player plus CDRom driver 4 or later.
The program asks you to select a track, start time and length,
and it will read that section from the disk and store it in a
System7 sound file. You can choose between 8 or 16 bit resolution,
mono or stereo (or left or right channel only), and 11kHz, 22kHz
or 44kHz sample rate. The program is freeware.

We routinely transfer 10 - 40 MByte file between the two environments using
Syquest Disks. Programming DOS/Windows to use Syquest was a pain, like
everything else on PC's, but it works smoothly now. We use AccessPC on the
Mac side to read/write the DOS formatted Syquests. It is also MUCH easier to
format a Syquest for DOS format on the Mac than it is on a PC.

Hi! The QUERY is a simple one: is there available a neat extension (or
whatever) than allows you to change the designated main monitor on the fly?
The PROBLEM: I have a standard Apple Colour Monitor and a large Radius B/W
two-page display. Normally, the Apple monitor is the main monitor (and
indeed often the other is left switched off). But when doing DTP work in
FrameMaker, I of course use the big monitor. It would be convenient if I
could then, on the fly, switch that to the main monitor - not so much
because I need the menu bar there (I don't, as I tend to use keyboard
short-cuts or the floating menus), but because various alerts, dialogue
windows etc. appear on the "wrong" monitor.
Any suggestions or pointers gratefully received.

Subject: Do you like your Panasonic KX-P5400 laser printer?
I'm considering purchasing a Panasonic SideWriter KX-P5400 PostScript
LED laser printer. I'm hoping anyone out there that has one of these
things will drop me a line and let me know how they like it. I figure
there can't many of you out there, since until recently an AppleTalk
interface was only an option (and an expensive one at that).
I'm especially interested in how well the optional FAX interface works
with Macs. The little documentation I've seen seems to imply that maybe
the FAX stuff only works from PC-clones, though I did find a LaserWriter
8 PPD file on ftp.adobe.com, so I would think it should work.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the printer, it's a 300dpi
PostScript LEVEL 2 LED printer with a vertical orientation (5in x 15in
footprint) and 2MB RAM (expandible to 4MB). Pretty basic, but it sells
for about US$800, or US$700 after a US$100 rebate from Panasonic, so
it's pretty reasonable for a printer that has a FAX option.

I waited 8 months for my Quadra 700 (I knew a 68040 Mac was coming). I
rented a Mac+ to use at home in the interim (I still use the Mac IIci at
work). If you need a computer now, buy a computer now (there will ALWAYS
be the most amazing, whiz-bang, new system just six months from
now--whenever now happens to be). If you can do without and want what may
become the "industry standard," wait.

I gave MacSlurp a try and it works very well at gettings news from my server.
However it does not post my follow up articles which I made using rnMac.
MacSlurp tells me that 0 articles were accepted, 0 sent and 0 rejected.
rnMac put some files into the MacSlurp spool folder I created, and the
names start with C or D.
I suspect that I may have set up rnMac incorrectly, but I am not sure.
I tried to send email to the author Tom Davies (t...@horse.demon.co.uk)
but the hostname is unknown.

Apple should indeed be marketing to the right group, the one I'm in.
With freeware slurpee for downloading text files from my mac and
stories from the newsgroup of fans where paramount gets some of its writers,
alt.startrek.creative,
I can read star trek stories everywhere I take my newton.
For example, they have posts like:

Does anyone know if there's a Windoze equivalent of the Info-Mac archives?
I'm setting up a school district with a WAN and, like it or not, I need a
number of DOS and Windoze-based utilities.
What I'm specifically looking for is a Ping-like utility that can confirm
IPX traffic across a WAN. Our telecom company is installing the hubs,
routers and frame relay links, but all we can test remotely is TCP/IP traffic.
To see if IPX is being routed correctly, we have to go the remote site and
install a NetWare server. (Kind of a hassle if it turns out IPX is NOT
routing correctly...) We'd like to take a laptop or even a workstation out
to the remote site & run some utility to test IPX before installing the
servers.
Any ideas?

If you happen to often upload GNU compressed files (.gz) on your Mac, be
sure to get macgzip_022.cpt off sumex's (and mirrors') ~/rec directory
asap. I was having lots of problems unstuffing MacPerl, after downloading

file) when converting Mac_Perl_413_appl.sit.bin back into a Stuffit file,

recompress an already compressed file, but go ask the FTP server...

Im looking for some insight/advice on mail and/or BBS systems.
I'm currently helping a major school district near Seattle set up a district-
wide WAN. We'll ultimately have about 28 servers and over 1000 nodes, and
we're evaluating e-mail solutions for the WAN. We're running Novell 4.01 on
HP NetServers, and the workstations will be 80% Macs, 20% Windows machines.

We'll have about 10,000 users of the e-mail/BBS system. (No, that's not a
typo. I did mean 10,000 users!) The district has determined that well
run either MS Mail or FirstClass. Weve heard about Microsofts announced
Exchange Server enterprise messaging solution, but its not scheduled to
ship until next spring at the earliest.
Has anyone had e-mail experience in WANs this large, with this many users?
Im trying to figure out how many servers for each system wed need, and
then figure costs. Of course, FirstClass offers the addition of a BBS
system; MS Mail offers the promise of Exchange Server.
Hmmm...
ANY ideas/experience/suggestions would be great!

While I had an AppleLink account I really enjoyed the "Hot News" feature (which
summarized computer-related news into 3-4 lines per article cited and provide
the source and issue that the article came from.) Having dropped the A-Link

services around (ie, NewsBytes), but I really like the format and summary style
of "Hot News". Is there another source or site that I can access this feature

I recently purchased MediaVision's ProAudioSpectrum 16 hoping to record 4
digital tracks in 16bit format.
To my great dismay , I discovered that the software included in the package
was not at all compatible with my machine Mac IIx with Daystar Turbo
040/40Mhz. I then immediately got in touch with the manufacturer to ask for
help.
They promptly sent me a beta version of the PAS 16 extension which they
claimed would not only be compatible, but would solve the problem
alltogether!
Well, it didn't.
I have since spent weeks reconfiguring my machine with and without the
accelerator, as well as disabling all non-essential extensions and control
panels.
Finally, I found that if I ran it in 24bit mode it would load, but eventually
crash if I tried to use it.
I have since been in touch with MediaVision who no longer seems so
accomodating as before.
I'm using System 7.1 with HSU 2.0 does anyone know of someone who has hacked
around with their software, and if so, how do I get in touch with them?
Also, I've just seen something called ExtensionShell 1.3 which would seem to
be a viable solution if I knew how to write code.
Would anyone be willing to give it a shot?

Subject: Problem finding HP LaserJet 4M
An HP LaserJet 4M was recently added to the
network around here, but it has disappeared as
far as Mac's are concerned.
It is spooled to from a Sun, and has it's
printcap name added properly. When it
was originally added to the net, it showed up
as "LaserJet 4M" in the proper Apple zone. The person
setting it up then used the HP nameing program to
give it a new name. It worked fine that day. Since
then, it shows up nowhere. There is nothing with the
new name or the original "LaserJet 4M" in the zone.
I tried shutting the printer off to see if it would disappear from
the printers listed, but nothing changed. The printer still
works from the Sun side of things.
I have no idea where most of the printers in
the zone are, so I can't know go around saying "What's
this printer's name?" I'd like to avoid printing out
30 messages to strange printers with their Apple zone name,
hoping the printer has been oddly renamed somehow.
Please give me some idea as to how to find this
printer. Thanks.

Took me a while to make his party list into a readable format and figured
others might not want to duplicate my efforts. So ...
Here's what you do to make this readable.
1. Copy the text into your favorite word processor and remove all returns
(replace returns with nothing).
2. Next replace all instances with a tab.
3. You guessed it, replace all instances with a return.
4. Save the resulting file as TEXT and then open that file with your
favorite spreadsheet. (Alternatively you can copy and paste it into your
spreadsheet.)
5. Use landscape, format the column widths, use a small font size, shrink
the print size or use legal paper, then print.
I got the entire party list on one page where it is much easier to carry
around AND read.

I think you may try to see inside the System Folder if exist a folder named
"Installer temp". I've experienced that every time an installation crash,
this working folder remain. The solution is simple: erase it.

I've experienced this also, Norm. The installer actually copied
files to your hard drive, but it crashed before they could be seen.
(Perhaps the desktop file hadn't yet been updated, don't know for
sure.)
I had a nasty time getting it off my disk. I finally ran Norton
Utilites on the drive. Norton fixed the problem.

I get this question (old Apple Mic, new Mac) at work a lot. Here's the
story:
The old mac's (si, 700, 610, 650, etc..) used the silver dollar mic, know
just as the Apple Microphone. With the release of the AV macs, they
switched formats, just to make it harder on employees of Apple dealers.
The AV's, the PowerMacs, the Color Classic ('member that?), and the LC 475
all require the "PlainTalk Mic", the wierd flat faced one that is about 25
or 30 bucks, as opposed to about 20 for the old one.
I know the above machines require the new mic, but I still don't know about
all of them, as Apple doesn't tell us. (i.e. LC 575, BlackBirds,
Performa/Quadra 63x, whatever.)
If there is enough interest, I could test the two mics on our macs at work,
as we have most models on the sales floor.
Wondering what Apple will do next,

You'll need a PlainTalk microphone, the old Si microphones don't work. I've
heard that PlainTalk for Power Macintosh (M2844LL/A) contains the PlainTalk
microphone, the PlainTalk 1.2 Speech Recognition software and the PlainTalk 1.2
Text-to-Speech suite.

Hello,
Has anyone seen (or heard) a problem with using a Supra 144pb internal
modem with a Powerbook 180c? I am using ARA 2.0 client with the setup and
there are no dial or modem negotiation tones. It does seem to connect OK.
This same modem works fine with tones in other Powerbook 1xx models. I have
tried everything (Sound CP, ARA setup, etc.), including different Supra CCL
scripts and editing some to add ATL2 and ATM1 commands with no avail. Can
anyone help? Is this a known problem of the 144bp with PB180c? Supra has
not been able to help.

The following is to express my discontent with Symantec Corp. This
was one company that I really admired for the great products they provided.
My excitement lasted until I bought Think C 6.0 in winter and after sending
in my registration form I never received any acknowledgment that I was
included in their registration list. I was never contacted for any upgrade
information and still haven't been (after a mayor upgrade to version 7.0).
One of my best friends, Hector J. Justiniano, ordered DiskDoubler 4.0
almost a year ago, they were selling version 3.7.7 with a free upgrade to
version 4.0 when it came out (never told him that though), and after a
large number of calls to Symantec, to which there has never been a call
back, he still hasn't received version 4.0 (which was what he bought in the
first place).
I really think I made a mistake in choosing Symantec C over
MetroWerks', which offer Pascal, C and C++ for the same price that I paid
for Think C only, and promise to contact you "three times a year" on
updates and even have native PowerMac versions of their software for
complete portability. IMHO the support of a company should be as good (or
better) than the quality of their products and in that branch Symantec
definitely failed.
Any comments from MetroWerks users will be welcome, and if anyone
knows their e-mail address, please send it me, I'll like to get in touch
with the company.

Put all the machines directly onto the same ethernet. There are DOS and
Windoze clients for internet services. Not being one of DOS guys I cannot
point you toward appropriate resources but, for sure there are POP3 mail
readers for DOS over TCP/IP. Your PCs should be able to log into MailShare
no problem.

Well, that's a question for sure. Strong arms are twisting the good folk at
Dartmouth trying to convince them to do a MacOS DNS. Personally, I have
just purchased MachTen, Unix that runs on the MacOS, (i...@tenon.com) just
so I can have it run a DNS process on my mail server. I too am a Mac only
network connection. They claim it works great and others who have used
MachTen really like it, and I need a DNS, and hey, I've always wanted to
learn Unix ... NOT! So after MacWhirled, I'll install it and see what
happens. I assume it will do the job but being Unix illiterate is a
handicap in this task.

Web clients require TCP/IP--if your dialup is SLIP or PPP, you can use one

At 14.4 kbps WWW is DOG slow (makes Word on a Mac+ running System 7 look
positively quick). Last night I saw some statistics taken from the logs of
the largest WWW sites that suggest that fewer than 25,000 hosts regularly
access WWW. WWW is beautiful--it also takes LOTS of bandwidth to do its
thing. I have a direct IP connection at work; I find WWW facinating, but
too slow to be really useful (I'm rarely in the office at 3 am when

'Formulae 1' is a fast and compact Computer Algebra System
originally designed to run on a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant).
The program is only about 80k bytes long (including the Mac
overhead of ~31k bytes). Dynamic memory consumption is also
minimum. 'Formulae 1' features :
- Fast automatic simplification of expressions containing
symbols and functions.
- Graphical display of expressions with support for special
functions drawing (derivatives, integrals, square roots, etc)
and the Greek alphabet.
- Dynamically extensible Mathematics Knowledge.
This release of 'Formulae 1' contains a command line interface
but a future release will sport a more Mac-like User Interface.

A number of changes have gone into the program since the last release.
The most significant changes are the addition of custom grades and of
attendence recording. Several minor bugs and annoyances reported by
teachers were also corrected.
Freeware
Eagle GradeBook is free. However, if you use it please send me a
postcard. Knowing the program is being used inspires me to keep it
up to date. I also am willing to consider suggestions for improvement.
Introduction
Eagle GradeBook is written for school teachers to track a class of
students. The basic functions of the program are to record attendence,
record assignments and grades, compute student grades, and produce
reports. A spreadsheet is used as the primary method of entering and
maintaining data. The objective was to make the spreadsheet look much
like the ones used in typical grade books. There are over a dozen
different reports available. I have attempted to make the interface
as friendly as possible and hope it is intuitive.
Grades may be entered using a letter grade, points, pass/fail, or
plus, check, minus. You may also define your own letter grades.
Calculation of grades may use a straight average, even average, or
weighted average.
Since posting the Eagle GradeBook program I have heard from teachers
in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The program has been
used from elementary school through college.

Here is HC/HT Help, a DocMaker stand-alone. This is information
giving help with HyperCard and HyperTalk. It replaces my earlier
HyperCard Help, but the only difference is that the earlier version
was created with a different app, Misebirakesu, which turned out
not to work on every machine, whereas DocMaker is more robust
and better supported.
I use this as my primary reference for HyperCard and HyperTalk

Here is MacCurveFit 1.0.8 which is the final revision of MacCurveFit 1.0.
(Version 1.1 is due for release next month.)
MacCurveFit is a scientific least squares curve fitting program. Data sets can
be entered into a spreadsheet window or imported from programs like Excel or
extracted from text files. Arbitrary equations may then be fitted to the data
and displayed graphically. The equations can be defined by typing them as text
and so the program is very flexible. There is also a choice of mathematical
algorithms that can be used for curve fitting.

Requirements: System 7.0 or higher
This finds any kind of root. You enter the kind of root square, cube,
fourth etc... in the first box and the number in the second than hit the
button. If the number has a perfect root it is displayed. If it doesn't
have a perfect root the program displays a decimal approximation
and a reduced version of the root if applicable. In the reduced
version the Apple sign stands for the appropriate root. So if you
asked it to find the 3rd root of 54 the program would display 3
'apple sign' 2 meaning 3 times the cube root of 2.
This program is based on a similar program I wrote called Square
Root Finder which does the same thing for square roots only. If you
are only interested in Square Roots I would advise you to find that
program as it is easier to use and has more features like negative
numbers. Anyway have fun fooling around with this program. It's
free and if you have any questions e-mail or mail me.

The Outland TCP Tool is a connection tool for the Communications Toolbox. It
uses the MacTCP driver to communicate over TCP/IP networks. The tool
supports synchronous and asynchronous open, close, listen, read, and write.
This is not a Telnet tool! If you want to connect to the Telnet port, 23,
you are probably not going to have much luck. The Outland TCP Tool provides
a raw TCP connection only.
In the settings dialog, you can enter an IP address and port number. If you
are using the tool to open a connection, the address and port number are of
the TCP port you are connecting to. If you are using the tool to listen for
an incoming connection, the address is ignored (it is always the local
machine), and the port is the port number to listen on. The port number 0
has a special meaning to the MacTCP driver; using it is not recommended.
You may be freely copy and use this tool for personal, non-commercial
activities. For all other uses, contact Outland.

a Quark document and boom! it looses some of it's attributes like
position, scale, etc.? well, if it did, this XTension is for you.
And if it didn't happen, you still need this XTension, because it
is just a matter of time before it does.
PictXPrep is an XTension ($20) for QuarkXPress versions 3.2 and
higher. PictXPrep is a utility which scans a document on open, save
or print, and automatically updates all the modified pictures,
keeping their original attributes. PictXPrep(tm) also allows for
manual selection and update of either all pictures in the current
spread or just selected ones, without going through the
"Picture Usage" menu.

Printer Defaults is an application to modify the default settings in
printer drivers and similar Chooser documents such as print-to-fax and
print-to-document drivers.
In version 1.3.1 of Printer Defaults the additional options dialog for
LaserWriter 8.x has been modified to work with an alpha release of
LaserWriter 8.2 included on the 1994 World Wide Developer's Conference
CD. There is no guarantee that it will work correctly with the final
version of 8.2. It also adds an option to hide the Setup button in
LaserWriter 7.2 and includes some untested postscript files intended
to change the default paper trays on the Personal LaserWriter NTR and
LaserWriter Select 310/360.
As with previous versions it can be included in the Info-Mac CD-ROM
collection.

under unix. Not good for the Mac users.
As usual, the source code is supplied. This file must go thru
uudecode, uncompress, tar -xf, and finally make.
This version was modified by Ian Feldman, designer of setext.
The important change is that the two lists of chapters and sections
are combined into one. It was designed to work with lynx.
Users of lynx should add this line into lynx.cfg:

Then, lynx will use sv for displaying files ending with .etx.

The SoftwareFPU 3.0 distribution that was recently submitted to the
archives was inefficiently compressed (Stuffit 1.51 and binhexed twice).
The documentation was also saved in MS Word 'Fast' format, and was
consequently 5x larger than it needed to be. In an effort to save
valuable archive disk space, I resaved the documentation, compressed with
StuffitLite, and binhexed it (once).

Here is a submission of my favorite desktop textures composed of various
GIFs and JPEGs that I've found using anonymous FTP on Internet. As such,
it is assumed that there is no liability for their redistribution as long

The images have been slightly edited only to fit the desktop textures format

You can install multiple copies of the TCP extension if you wish to make
several ports available over the Internet. You can specify different port
numbers depending on the services you wish to provide - 1474 is the default
TeleFinder Port number, but you could just as easily install port 23 for
Telnet users.
This is a DEMO version of the TCP Host package. This demo is fully
functional but is set to expire at the end of September, 1994.

I have had good success with MightyMenus from Night Light Software.
MightyMenus is the successor to AutoMenus or AutoMenus II (from Michael
Conrad.) I haven't seen the demo version of MightyMenus on any of the

Well now, for problem #1, I'd recommend checking youor Date & Time Control
Panel. It allows you to choose the formats thhat your date and time appear
in.
This CP might even be corrupted which could be the cause of your problem. Try
replacing it with a clean copy.
As for your Excel problem, see how you have your dates formatted. If the
format makes the entry too wide for the column, you'll get this "########"
notation. Highlight the column, choose Format, Column Width, and Best Fit to
have the column expand to fit the widest entry.

A silly question (related to System 7.5, but if you are a Launcher user on
a Performa you might be able to answer this).
In the latest MacUser on page 80 in an article about System 7.5 there is a
picture of the Launcher. It has the usual collection of icons for several
graphics apps. This is fine I understand how to add icons to the Launcher.
But along the top of the window there is a set of "puffy" buttons called
"Applications", "Layout", and "Graphics". It looks like each of these
puttons when pressed shows a different set of icons. This seems like a neat
feature but I can't figure out how to set it up!
How does one set up these buttons? From the complete lack of UI to this
control panel I am at a lack to figure out how to do this!
I'm running System 7.5 beta 6.

Subject: [A]: Mac SE Internal Hard Disk Broken...
Hmm, those 40 meggers. While I was consulting at school a couple of years
ago, we had a rash of these problems (SE's with 40meg HDs that wouldn't spin
up). It turns out to be a problem of "stiction" (pronounced stick-shun)
Enough grit and grime build up on the head of the drive that the weak drive
motor could not overcome the friction between the head and the disk. The
motors were developed to have just enough "umph" to get the drive moving,
when an extra little friction is involved it didn't work. Of course, the
friction coefficient lowers when the drive is moving, so once it gets going
there's no problem.
For a while Apple was replacing these drives free of charge if their serial
number fell in a certain range. Talk to your local repair shop or Apple's
800 line. I believe there was a time limit on when you could return these,
but I could be mistaken.
The only useful thing we could do was to get the drive spinning long enough
to copy off all the important data. The user could then get the drive
replaced and we would replace their data. This was only necessary, because
Apple would not do any data recovery.
If you want to get it moving again, the basic idea is to jolt the drive
while it's powered up (I know that sounds bad) to get it spinning. Yes, I
basically mean whack the front of the machine or drop it an inch or two. In
the worst cases, we would take the case off, remove the drive from it's
bracket, then power up the machine. In this state, you can then quickly
twist the drive around it's shortest axis to sort of jump-start the spinning
process. Be sure you're connected to a network or an external HD so you can
copy this data off when you do it.
As far as I know, there's no fixing such a drive, it may be time to invest
in a new one.

I've had good success with this process. There may be other ways, but this
seems to work just fine:
You'll need:
- Quicktime
- a Quicktime player (like Apple's MoviePlayer or SimplePlayer)
- the foriegn file extensions for the CD-ROM (These come with Apple's CD-ROM
software)
- the freeware app, Sound2Movies (which converts Quicktime movie audio
tracks to System 7 sounds and back)
1) Using the Quicktime player open the audio track you want to convert. In
MoviePlayer you can select any subsection of the track to save rather than
the whole thing (which would be quite large).
2) Open the quicktime movie you just created with Sound2Movies and convert
it to a sound.
There you are! If you need it in another format (as I did) use Norman
Franke's freeware SoundApp 1.2.1. You can then convert it to AIFF, NeXT, or
Windows WAVE file.
My Windows machine at work now beeps with the "Indigo" sound thanks to this
process. It also starts up with a sound containing the first seconds of a
Queen song which I created with this process.

One of my colleagues here is an historian specializing in the writing of John
Calvin. He is preparing a 'critical edition' of some of Calvin's writings in
the original Latin and would be greatly aided by the ability to spell check in
Latin. Preferred word processors are WriteNow or ClarisWorks, but a Latin
spell-checker for any program would be worth his while to get even if he only
runs the 'final draft' through a friend's copy of the program once.
Please write if you know of a Latin spell-check module for any wp.
Please write if you are interested in having such a thing yourself.
If the worst comes to the worst, we could build one up by taking a text that
has been checked, highlighting the whole thing and hitting WriteNow's 'Add to
Dictionary' button to add the whole lot at once. But this would result in an
incomplete dictionary... and Latin being a dead language, it would be possible
to make a complete and virtually authoritative one.
I'll be away for most of August (-net withdrawal!-), but I shall reply on my
return.

Well, perhaps the digest which contained it got lost somewhere, but
recently I posted an application which performs that task to info-mac.
You can find it under snd/util/grab-audio-11.hqx.
All you need is an Apple CD300 player plus CDRom driver 4 or later.
The program asks you to select a track, start time and length,
and it will read that section from the disk and store it in a
System7 sound file. You can choose between 8 or 16 bit resolution,
mono or stereo (or left or right channel only), and 11kHz, 22kHz
or 44kHz sample rate. The program is freeware.

We routinely transfer 10 - 40 MByte file between the two environments using
Syquest Disks. Programming DOS/Windows to use Syquest was a pain, like
everything else on PC's, but it works smoothly now. We use AccessPC on the
Mac side to read/write the DOS formatted Syquests. It is also MUCH easier to
format a Syquest for DOS format on the Mac than it is on a PC.

Hi! The QUERY is a simple one: is there available a neat extension (or
whatever) than allows you to change the designated main monitor on the fly?
The PROBLEM: I have a standard Apple Colour Monitor and a large Radius B/W
two-page display. Normally, the Apple monitor is the main monitor (and
indeed often the other is left switched off). But when doing DTP work in
FrameMaker, I of course use the big monitor. It would be convenient if I
could then, on the fly, switch that to the main monitor - not so much
because I need the menu bar there (I don't, as I tend to use keyboard
short-cuts or the floating menus), but because various alerts, dialogue
windows etc. appear on the "wrong" monitor.
Any suggestions or pointers gratefully received.

I'm considering purchasing a Panasonic SideWriter KX-P5400 PostScript
LED laser printer. I'm hoping anyone out there that has one of these
things will drop me a line and let me know how they like it. I figure
there can't many of you out there, since until recently an AppleTalk
interface was only an option (and an expensive one at that).
I'm especially interested in how well the optional FAX interface works
with Macs. The little documentation I've seen seems to imply that maybe
the FAX stuff only works from PC-clones, though I did find a LaserWriter
8 PPD file on ftp.adobe.com, so I would think it should work.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the printer, it's a 300dpi
PostScript LEVEL 2 LED printer with a vertical orientation (5in x 15in
footprint) and 2MB RAM (expandible to 4MB). Pretty basic, but it sells
for about US$800, or US$700 after a US$100 rebate from Panasonic, so
it's pretty reasonable for a printer that has a FAX option.

Does anyone know if there's a Windoze equivalent of the Info-Mac archives?
I'm setting up a school district with a WAN and, like it or not, I need a
number of DOS and Windoze-based utilities.
What I'm specifically looking for is a Ping-like utility that can confirm
IPX traffic across a WAN. Our telecom company is installing the hubs,
routers and frame relay links, but all we can test remotely is TCP/IP traffic.
To see if IPX is being routed correctly, we have to go the remote site and
install a NetWare server. (Kind of a hassle if it turns out IPX is NOT
routing correctly...) We'd like to take a laptop or even a workstation out
to the remote site & run some utility to test IPX before installing the
servers.
Any ideas?

know of some programs that I can use to translate a Mac picture to a
Windoze bitmap (.BMP)? I can translate the Mac file into just about any
Mac format to begin with. I am also looking for a program to translate
Mac sound files to Windoze sound files (.WAV)???
Finally, I would like to obtain a UNIX program to de-BINHEX files.

If you happen to often upload GNU compressed files (.gz) on your Mac, be
sure to get macgzip_022.cpt off sumex's (and mirrors') ~/rec directory
asap. I was having lots of problems unstuffing MacPerl, after downloading

pays to update.

P.S.: For the technically curious, I was getting a -38 (premature end of
file) when converting Mac_Perl_413_appl.sit.bin back into a Stuffit file,
after extracting it from Mac_Perl_413_appl.sit.bin.gz. Real silly to
recompress an already compressed file, but go ask the FTP server...

Im looking for some insight/advice on mail and/or BBS systems.
I'm currently helping a major school district near Seattle set up a district-
wide WAN. We'll ultimately have about 28 servers and over 1000 nodes, and
we're evaluating e-mail solutions for the WAN. We're running Novell 4.01 on
HP NetServers, and the workstations will be 80% Macs, 20% Windows machines.

We'll have about 10,000 users of the e-mail/BBS system. (No, that's not a
typo. I did mean 10,000 users!) The district has determined that well
run either MS Mail or FirstClass. Weve heard about Microsofts announced
Exchange Server enterprise messaging solution, but its not scheduled to
ship until next spring at the earliest.
Has anyone had e-mail experience in WANs this large, with this many users?
Im trying to figure out how many servers for each system wed need, and
then figure costs. Of course, FirstClass offers the addition of a BBS
system; MS Mail offers the promise of Exchange Server.
Hmmm...
ANY ideas/experience/suggestions would be great!

I recently purchased MediaVision's ProAudioSpectrum 16 hoping to record 4
digital tracks in 16bit format.
To my great dismay , I discovered that the software included in the package
was not at all compatible with my machine Mac IIx with Daystar Turbo
040/40Mhz. I then immediately got in touch with the manufacturer to ask for
help.
They promptly sent me a beta version of the PAS 16 extension which they
claimed would not only be compatible, but would solve the problem
alltogether!
Well, it didn't.
I have since spent weeks reconfiguring my machine with and without the
accelerator, as well as disabling all non-essential extensions and control
panels.
Finally, I found that if I ran it in 24bit mode it would load, but eventually
crash if I tried to use it.
I have since been in touch with MediaVision who no longer seems so
accomodating as before.
I'm using System 7.1 with HSU 2.0 does anyone know of someone who has hacked
around with their software, and if so, how do I get in touch with them?
Also, I've just seen something called ExtensionShell 1.3 which would seem to
be a viable solution if I knew how to write code.
Would anyone be willing to give it a shot?

Subject: Problem finding HP LaserJet 4M
An HP LaserJet 4M was recently added to the
network around here, but it has disappeared as
far as Mac's are concerned.
It is spooled to from a Sun, and has it's
printcap name added properly. When it
was originally added to the net, it showed up
as "LaserJet 4M" in the proper Apple zone. The person
setting it up then used the HP nameing program to
give it a new name. It worked fine that day. Since
then, it shows up nowhere. There is nothing with the
new name or the original "LaserJet 4M" in the zone.
I tried shutting the printer off to see if it would disappear from
the printers listed, but nothing changed. The printer still
works from the Sun side of things.
I have no idea where most of the printers in
the zone are, so I can't know go around saying "What's
this printer's name?" I'd like to avoid printing out
30 messages to strange printers with their Apple zone name,
hoping the printer has been oddly renamed somehow.
Please give me some idea as to how to find this
printer. Thanks.

Took me a while to make his party list into a readable format and figured
others might not want to duplicate my efforts. So ...
Here's what you do to make this readable.
1. Copy the text into your favorite word processor and remove all returns
(replace returns with nothing).
2. Next replace all instances with a tab.
3. You guessed it, replace all instances with a return.
4. Save the resulting file as TEXT and then open that file with your
favorite spreadsheet. (Alternatively you can copy and paste it into your
spreadsheet.)
5. Use landscape, format the column widths, use a small font size, shrink
the print size or use legal paper, then print.
I got the entire party list on one page where it is much easier to carry
around AND read.

I think you may try to see inside the System Folder if exist a folder named
"Installer temp". I've experienced that every time an installation crash,
this working folder remain. The solution is simple: erase it.

I've experienced this also, Norm. The installer actually copied
files to your hard drive, but it crashed before they could be seen.
(Perhaps the desktop file hadn't yet been updated, don't know for
sure.)
I had a nasty time getting it off my disk. I finally ran Norton
Utilites on the drive. Norton fixed the problem.

I get this question (old Apple Mic, new Mac) at work a lot. Here's the
story:
The old mac's (si, 700, 610, 650, etc..) used the silver dollar mic, know
just as the Apple Microphone. With the release of the AV macs, they
switched formats, just to make it harder on employees of Apple dealers.
The AV's, the PowerMacs, the Color Classic ('member that?), and the LC 475
all require the "PlainTalk Mic", the wierd flat faced one that is about 25
or 30 bucks, as opposed to about 20 for the old one.
I know the above machines require the new mic, but I still don't know about
all of them, as Apple doesn't tell us. (i.e. LC 575, BlackBirds,
Performa/Quadra 63x, whatever.)
If there is enough interest, I could test the two mics on our macs at work,
as we have most models on the sales floor.

Subject: Supra 144pb modem problems on PB-180c
Hello,
Has anyone seen (or heard) a problem with using a Supra 144pb internal
modem with a Powerbook 180c? I am using ARA 2.0 client with the setup and
there are no dial or modem negotiation tones. It does seem to connect OK.
This same modem works fine with tones in other Powerbook 1xx models. I have
tried everything (Sound CP, ARA setup, etc.), including different Supra CCL
scripts and editing some to add ATL2 and ATM1 commands with no avail. Can
anyone help? Is this a known problem of the 144bp with PB180c? Supra has
not been able to help.

Subject: Symantec Corp.
The following is to express my discontent with Symantec Corp. This
was one company that I really admired for the great products they provided.
My excitement lasted until I bought Think C 6.0 in winter and after sending
in my registration form I never received any acknowledgment that I was
included in their registration list. I was never contacted for any upgrade
information and still haven't been (after a mayor upgrade to version 7.0).
One of my best friends, Hector J. Justiniano, ordered DiskDoubler 4.0
almost a year ago, they were selling version 3.7.7 with a free upgrade to
version 4.0 when it came out (never told him that though), and after a
large number of calls to Symantec, to which there has never been a call
back, he still hasn't received version 4.0 (which was what he bought in the
first place).
I really think I made a mistake in choosing Symantec C over
MetroWerks', which offer Pascal, C and C++ for the same price that I paid
for Think C only, and promise to contact you "three times a year" on
updates and even have native PowerMac versions of their software for
complete portability. IMHO the support of a company should be as good (or
better) than the quality of their products and in that branch Symantec
definitely failed.
Any comments from MetroWerks users will be welcome, and if anyone
knows their e-mail address, please send it me, I'll like to get in touch
with the company.

No problems here. These things usually come with formatting software
that knows how to handle them. Is she trying to use an older formatter?

Apple decided to stop ALL development of new hardware for, say, a year,
and spent ALL of their time and energy collecting a database of
problem encountered by real-world user with existing equipment ---> solution

problem encountered by real-world user with existing equipment ---> solution
etc.
This would give all of the software developers a chance to "catch-up",
for the different versions of all the software that we run to
become more inter-compatible and "come into sync",
and for the Mac-using community to truly have a more stable platform...

MacTCP will give all your Macs TCP/IP compatibility. I use a beta SMTP/POP3
mail server that runs on the MacOS. MailShare is written by Glenn Anderson

Put all the machines directly onto the same ethernet. There are DOS and
Windoze clients for internet services. Not being one of DOS guys I cannot
point you toward appropriate resources but, for sure there are POP3 mail
readers for DOS over TCP/IP. Your PCs should be able to log into MailShare
no problem.

Well, that's a question for sure. Strong arms are twisting the good folk at
Dartmouth trying to convince them to do a MacOS DNS. Personally, I have
just purchased MachTen, Unix that runs on the MacOS, (i...@tenon.com) just
so I can have it run a DNS process on my mail server. I too am a Mac only
network connection. They claim it works great and others who have used
MachTen really like it, and I need a DNS, and hey, I've always wanted to
learn Unix ... NOT! So after MacWhirled, I'll install it and see what
happens. I assume it will do the job but being Unix illiterate is a
handicap in this task.

Web clients require TCP/IP--if your dialup is SLIP or PPP, you can use one
of the Web clients, othewise not.
At 14.4 kbps WWW is DOG slow (makes Word on a Mac+ running System 7 look
positively quick). Last night I saw some statistics taken from the logs of
the largest WWW sites that suggest that fewer than 25,000 hosts regularly
access WWW. WWW is beautiful--it also takes LOTS of bandwidth to do its
thing. I have a direct IP connection at work; I find WWW facinating, but
too slow to be really useful (I'm rarely in the office at 3 am when
response probably is better
