Macintosh Portable - battery pack restoration

Post by detnyre » December 27th, 2007, 1:56 pm

Hi,

Last summer I purchased a Macintosh Portable that appears to be in great cosmetic condition - but the battery pack is dead. This is not unexpected.

I now have some time to work on restoring the computer to be usable again.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to restore the battery pack?

My best idea is to carefully open it up and remove the old battery and then head on over to a Batteries Plus store and see if they can create me a battery that will fit in the existing pack that has similar specifications....

I'm not sure if those can be restored in the traditional sense of restoring PowerBook batteries. Aren't they lead-acid batteries?
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

I found several places on the web that claim to rebuild batteries for the "Macintosh Portable" - it would probably be the easiest way to go:

Would "beige" and "hard plastic casing with two contacts on side" accurately describe your battery?

That would be incredibly if new batteries could still be bought for that system.

I received the new battery for the Macintosh Portable and it accepts a charge and appears to work. That is the good news.

The bad news is that it appears that the hard drive is bad.

I wonder if it is possible to somehow replace the hard drive with one of the newer SD memory cards? I remember seeing a posting on the web about doing this to some other retro mac...

Anyone have any ideas on where to get a reliable replacement hard drive for the Macintosh Portable.

My goal is to get this laptop going well enough to use it for the http://retrochallenge.net this summer...

People have done it to powerbooks, I would assume that if you can find the correct adapter you should be able do it to yours too.
