Dan,
Here's a great combo solution using MacTubes and vlc.

Use MacTubes (free) to search for videos. Right click/Control click your selection,--> copy url, then paste into vlc (Command-N, paste into HTTP field).

Also vlc plug-ins seems to work decently with Firefox.
