How to Compile Firefox Source Code in OS 9

Post by Full-Throttle » April 25th, 2008, 9:24 am

I am kind of disappointed that there are no modern web browsers for Mac OS 9 anymore. I have a Macbook and a PowerBook, so I only use Mac OS 9 for fun, but I still like to tinker with older Macs. iCab is out of date and no longer supported, and the older versions of Netscape suck, and I am not going to get into the issues with IE. So, I was wondering how you compile source code in Mac OS 9. I have done it before in OS X, but I cannot find the equivalent to xCode for Mac OS 9. Did Apple make a SDK for OS 9? If not, what are the steps for compiling source in OS 9. I want to try this out with Firefox 2.

Thanks for any help.

There isn't an Xcode for Mac OS 9 - most Mac OS 9 development towards the end there was done in CodeWarrior by Metrowerks, or Apple's Macintosh Programmers Workshop (MPW). Safari relies heavily on so many Mac OS X core technologies, it is highly unlikely that you or anyone will ever be able to port it to Mac OS 9. To do so, you'd also have to port, or emulate, significant pieces of Mac OS X.

You might want to try a newer version of Netscape than what you've been using, specifically Netscape 7.0.2, which is based on Mozilla. Or you can try a Mac OS 9 built of Mozilla, such as Wamcom. These are also outdated, but may be newer than what you're using. I seem to get along just fine with Wamcom, even on sites like Facebook.
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

Greetings, Full Throttle and Turboladdade

I occassionally run Mac OS9.22 and would to run "Fire Fox" on my iMac (500mhz)
...the only web browsers that I am able to use are :
Wamcom-131-macos9-20030723, Opera 5.0, Opera 6.x (Flash 7.0 is available
for Mozilla131, Opera5.0 and Opera 6.x) Opera 5.0 performs better than Opera 6.x
and there is a text browser "Wannabe.PPC.1.Ob14", this text browser is has been
very sucessfully and fast!!

I would like know "what versions of Fire Fox and Thunderbird could I run with
Mac OS X10.2? on my iMac?

I Wish you and Family Health and Wellness

You'll want to find Firefox 1.5.0.12.

I have and use in 10.2.8: iCab 3.0.5, Camino 1.0.1, Mozilla 1.7.13, Netscape 7.2, and an Apple updated version of Safari 1.0.

Hope this helps...
