OS 10.4 On G4 733MHz?

Post by MacMan » December 6th, 2010, 1:03 pm

I have a PPC G4 733MHz computer and was wondering if it is okay to install OS 10.4 onto it.The instructions say that OS 10.3 is the last version compatible with this computer. Are there any limitations or known problems associated with doing this? Thanks.

Wherever you're seeing that information, it is outdated. Your computer officially supports Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) and unofficially supports Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) as well. I would actually recommend the latter for you as it has many improvements over Tiger without a real impact on performance.
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

Turboladdade is right.

Personally I have installed Tiger on an iMac g4 700 without any problems, except the iMac had no DVD drive, just a CD drive, so I had to put it into target-disk mode and install from my Pismo using a firewire cable.
When 10.4 first came out, I installed Tiger on that Pismo Powerbook g3 400 mHz without a problem, directly form the retail install DVD, and it works very well, too.
Just for fun I installed 10.5 on the Pismo, but it was too much for the G3. ;)
