Yikes!

Post by macuser77 » December 31st, 2007, 1:00 pm

I'm expecting a G4 to come in off of ebay, and I think it is going to be a Yikes! Anyone successfully upgrade one of these?

There are some upgrades available for these from Sonnet. The main problem with a Yikes! G4 is that it does not have an AGP slot, limiting your video to PCI cards. This, in turn, prevents you from using Quartz Extreme, which greatly enhances the speed and responsiveness of Mac OS X's GUI.

While AGP-equipped G4s with upgrades have reportedly been able to use Leopard, I don't think I've yet heard of a PCI-only model doing so. "Officially" they're limited to Mac OS X Tiger.
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

I've determined the photo on the ebay auction isn't the exact computer they were shipping me, it was a stock photo they use for all their early G4's. I was assuming it was a Yikes! because the back showed only the AVI port, however I saw some others advertised as AGPs with the same video card (no DVI port) and they listed the serial number- which I cross referenced and it reported they are actual Sawtooth models. I wonder if Apple offered the AGP video card w/o the DVI video out.

By AVI do you mean ADC?

I wouldn't get a Yikes! G4 if I were you. Sawtooths have more modern standards such as AGP and the same processor slot as all subsequent PowerMac G4 models, for example. The Yikes! G4 is essentially a Blue & White G3 with a G4 processor.

How did you cross-reference the serial numbers? I just found a G4 at my town recycling center (it did boot fine with OS 9.2 installed) and want to get as much info on it as possible.
