Some versions of Mac OS X install CDs included Classic as an optional installer, didn't they?

I know OS X can be installed on the same partition as OS 9.

Have you tried just installing OS 9 without initializing the drive?

Yes, I think you may boot from OS9 CD and install into the same HD without formatting the existing system.

i have an os9 boot disk so I may give it a try

i know when you format the hd you have to check the box to allow os 9 installation or os9 will not recognize the drive so what the hack right.

you were right with a bootable cd you just start up with the cd and perform a clean install and restart. I booted right back into os x no problem. I did not want to reinstall osx and all my software. alas all is well thanx for the encouragement.

I believe you can still do this in Disk Utility in Tiger and below. Something along the lines of "install Mac OS 9 drivers" or something.

Probably not in Leopard though, since there is no Classic Mode anymore.

You are correct if when you format the drive you do not check the box for os9 drivers and you go back later the hard drive will not show up in os9. i know this because i have 2 hd's in my quicksilver the os x drive i did not check the os 9 driver box. So when i boot into os 9 the os x drive does not show up on the desktop ie no chance of screwing up my os x disk while in os9.

The down side is that it will require reformatting the drive if you did not install the drivers and want os 9 latter.

May I know if you still be able to select the OS X disk in Start Up disk while you in os 9 ? or you need to press option key while booting up to select os X ? thanks.

Mac OS 9 will allow you to select Mac OS X in Startup Disk.
