ata ide hard drives

I have a question about ide hard drives. their are ide-1 to ide-5 ata 33 to ata 133 etc.

now if you buy a new hard drive they are ata/ide 133

so for example my quicksilver controller is a ata/ide 66, will putting the faster ata 133 hard drives work.

this issue first started in an old beige g3 the old ata/ide controller choked on ata 133 hard drives the fix was a sonnet tempo ata 133 hd controller.

can you teach me how to deal with this issue. on some old sites they talk about the data rate but how do you test or know what that limit is.
