I'm completely lost here. It's running fine in new user accounts you create so it must be something with just your own user account. I'm not sure what I could be missing here but I'll ask around and get back to you.

Hey, one more thing, try restarting your computer and holding down SHIFT immediately upon restart. This puts Mac OS X into safe mode. If successful it'll say "SAFE MODE" on the screen. Login to your user account and try opening iTunes now... see what happens?

Ok I tried the safe mode, it took an extremely long time starting up and it still didn't open, on top of that my airport symbol at the top of my screen dissapeared and when I went into Internet connect it said my settings had been changed by another application, it kept giving me that notification and I couldn't even quit system preferences. I held down the power button till it shut off.

"Safe Mode" boots your Mac without unessential drivers and stuff, which would explain all that.

Try this. Make sure iTunes isn't running. Launch Console from the Applications/Utilities folder. In the window that appears, select "All Messages" from the panel on the left.

Now launch iTunes. After it fails to launch, go back to Console and see what's printed there. Perhaps copy and paste it here so we can all have a look.

Re: My iTunes won't open!

Post by hotchip » November 16th, 2009, 6:18 am

Hi, I've experienced the exact same problems as described. i set up a new profile and opened iTunes fine, but back in my own profile it just bounces in the dock. I got the following message in the console:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::ios_base::failure'
what(): basic_filebuf::underflow error reading the file

If it helps, my Mac (OS X, 10.4.11) was getting pretty full on the hard drive and a couple of times it reported not enough memory to save itunes library. I then deleted a load of stuff but next time I came to open iTunes it didn't work, perhaps suggesting a corruption in the itunes library. However, i did make an alias library as suggested earlier and this had no effect. Any further help you can give would be most appreciated!

I'm just shooting at random here, but from your Home folder, check Library / iTunes / iTunes Plugins folder for anything. If you find anything there, drag it to your desktop to remove it, and relaunch iTunes again.
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

amazing, you've fixed it for me! There was a file in there called audioscrobbler.bundle which i removed from the folder, placed on desktop and now it works. Thanks so much, you're a genius!

I'm having the same problem. My itunes app won't open, but also my mail app. won't work and safari. I'm using a Powerbook with Mac OS X 10.4.11. I've looked over another discussion and tried a few things. I've tried opening from applications folder....nothing. I've tried creating a new user account and still can't get these apps to work. Any suggestions, this is really frustrating!!

If you can't get these apps to work even under a new user account, then it's likely a more serious problem. You could start the long tedious process of trying to troubleshoot a system-wide problem like this, or you could just backup your important documents, reformat and reinstall Mac OS X.

My biggest worry is losing stuff I need. How do I backup my itunes library. I am a worship pastor at a church and I can't lose my music. So how do I back all of that up? And then how do I reinstall

Simply go to your user folder by clicking the house in a Finder window or by going to the Go menu and choosing Home. The folder that says "Music" - just drag that to an external hard drive. That's pretty much it. After you're done reinstalling, you'll replace the *new* Music folder with your backup.
