Mac Air 3G?

Post by MikeV99 » May 29th, 2011, 11:23 am

I have been comparing the Lenovo X220 with the 256K Mac Air. Other than an iPad & iPhone I have not used an Apple product (the first Apple probably does not count). I want a lightweight device that would allow me to do Photoshop/Lightroom reviews and edits while traveling. Also, I want to use it for doing Photoshop tutorials while sitting in my recliner. Both devices appear to be evenly matched. The 13" MacBook Air supports 1440 by 900 while the X220 is a 12.5" HD widescreen (1366x768). The X220 has a 320GB hard drive while the Air has a 256GB SSD drive (which could be upgraded to 512GB SSD for ~$1000). The X220 has a 2.7 GHz i-Core processor while the Air has a 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 6MB shared L2 cache. And so on and so on.

The X220 offers integrated mobile broadband that is not available with the Air. How could one use 3G mobile broadband with the Air?

What features and/or advantages does the Air offer?

I live in Arkansas and do not have access to an Apple store.

Thank you for your advice and comments.

Neither of these machines are going to be stellar professional graphics work machines. For that you'd want a large desktop replacement system like the 15" or 17" MBP, or an actual workstation like the Mac Pro tower.

You can use a little USB device offered by many carriers, or a mobile hotspot like the ones Verizon and Clear offer.

Incredible craftsmanship. Go see/hold/touch/use one in person and you'll understand. That plus Mac OS X and all the benefits that itself entails.
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

Thanks for the response. AT&T offers a hotspot plan for my iPhone for $45/mo for 4GB/mo. I need to find out if it can be activated/deactivated as needed without penalty.

The small laptop would not replace my big desktop which is used for serious editing. The laptop would be for traveling and tutorial use.

I do not have an Apple Store anywhere in the state. The Best Buy located ~45 miles from me has a very limited selection. I guess that would at least allow me to touch one.

Regards.
