e-mailing a document

I tried again and again to send a document attached to an e-mail, but the images on it come up the other end just as numbers. What do I have to do with a document before I attach it to an E-mail. (it worked once, but then the e-mail was completely garbled. The next time the e-mail seemed to have made it , but not the attachment.) In any way.....when the addressee forwarded it back, there was hardly anything left at all. 'Tried everything, to no avail.,
