iMac unresponsive

Post by Joanna » August 19th, 2016, 9:30 am

Hi,

My Mac is unresponsive, the finder, some of the applications. I have to force quit every few seconds. I have backup by time machine on ext hd but it's my only mac and I can't access my data from a Windows 10 laptop. I really need access to my data.
It's Friday end of work day so I think I am with this problem alone. I need to be accessible 24/7 doing important volunteer work and I NEED my data so I need to fix it as a matter of emergency.

I didn't update to El Capitan yet, but I doubt that this will solve the unresponsive Finder.

Most likely overheated processor (my uneducated guess). Will switch it off let it cool down.

In the meantime any other ideas are appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Joanna,
This doesn't sound like an overheating processor to me. Maybe some running processes that is going out of control. Can you please launch Activity Monitor, sort by CPU usage, take a screenshot and upload it here for us?

Also, can you go to the Apple Menu, choose About This Mac, click on the Storage tab and send us a screenshot of that as well?

I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.
