If you search for SMS, MMS or "text" in the App Store, theres tons of texting utilities that expand upon the features of the standard messaging app, including allowing you to do just that. I haven't used any of them personally so I couldn't recommend one specifically, but there seems to be a whole ton of them.

But as for Apple's app, no there is no setting to change that.
I am now telling the computer exactly what it can do.

What is the difference between SMS. MMs and 'text'?

Does anyone know how to download texts you want to save from an iPHONE?

Thanks!

SMS and MMS are the protocols for sending "texts" - text being just the generic term for these services. SMS is the earlier standard, and handles text only. MMS handles pictures and video.

Download to what? You can always copy and paste them into an email to yourself.

Thanks yet again Turboladde.

I don't know how to copy a text into an email but will look at the iPhone User Guide etc.

Simply hold down on text you want to copy until the Select/Select All/Paste/Etc... bubble appears. Choose select, and then you have the option to copy or cut if the circumstances permit.

Go to your email and then do the same but now you'll get a paste option.
