radeon 9200 card removal

Post by madmann » December 5th, 2007, 6:55 pm

I updated the graphics card in my quicksilver.

I added a 7500 agp radeon card every think works fine

I removed the radeon 9200 pci card and my machine boots into Darwin dsb login

So i put the 9200 back in and the machine boots into the gui. what is going on. I have no monitor attached to the 9200 it has to be a driver issue.

What are you getting video on when it boots into Darwin?

I guess a better question would be what are you trying to achieve ultimately? Video on the 9200?

What machine is this?

So the blue and white is what you're having problems on? Or the QuickSilver?

Ouch that does sound like quite a problem.

What sort of haxies do you have installed on this system, if any? Is this an unsupported instal of Leopard by any chance? Regardless of what version it is, did you install Mac OS originally with only the PCI video card installed? (although that shouldn't really make a difference)

First thing to try when installing/removing hardware is a PRAM reset. When booting, hold down the command-option-p-r keys until a second (or third or fourth, can't hurt) boot chime is heard. You can also reset the NVRAM by holding down the command-option-o-f keys. A white text on black screen will appear. At the prompt, type "reset-nvram" then enter. Then type "set-defaults", enter. Then "reset-all", enter. Don't type the quotes. The system will reboot.

I'm not sure if the quicksilvers have a cuda (capacitive unit discharge asic) button. If they do, unplug your system, open the case and press it for a few seconds. It should be near the battery.

Good luck.

it appears that the pram was the issue. my quicksilver has booted up twice now without the 9200 installed.

thanks

Wow who would have thought PRAM still caused issues in Mac OS X.

Your welcome! Glad to know a simple pram reset cured it.

I guess I have a temperamental G4 tower (agp graphics). Any hardware changes require me to hit the cuda button. Recently removed a hard disk. Reset required. Installed 802.11g card, another reset. I've gotten used to pushing that sucker.

Will it boot normally if you type mac-boot and press enter? Have you tried the pram reset again successfully? If this is required every time, perhaps the battery is dead or dying.

Other ideas:
1. Install latest ATI drivers.
2. Run disk utility when started from your install disk.
3. If you have a utility like TechTool Pro, start from the disk and run it.
4. Select your start up disk in System Preferences, then click the lock to prevent any changes.
