If you have synced the iPad with iTunes and it says you are up-to-date, then you already have iOS 4.2

Updates are handled through iTunes. So if your iPad says it's running iOS 3.2.2, then you have to plug it into your computer, go to its page in iTunes, and click Check for Update...

There isn't any other way to do it.

iOS 4.2 Software update says updating is easy.
Connect your ipad to your PC and follow the onscreen instructions in iTures.

I Did.

and there are no updates available for any apps in your iTunes library.

iOS is not an app. Updating apps and updating iOS are in two different sections of iTunes. Click on your iPhone/iPod/iPad (not the iTunes Store or "Apps" section) and then click Check for Update.

If you're clicking that and it's still not working then perhaps something's wrong with your iPad and you need to restore it, or you're using an old version of iTunes.

If the image displays too small in iForum, you can see a larger version of my image here. I'm saying when you plug your iPad into your computer, click on it's listing under "Device" in iTunes - do not go to iTunes Store or Apps, which is where you had to of gone to see "there are no updates available for any apps in your iTunes library" as you described earlier.

If you're at the proper iPad device area, you click Check for Update, and it still doesn't update then:
  • your iPad is up to date,
  • you're still clicking the wrong button,
  • or your copy of iTunes is out of date.
In none of the above cases is deleting and reinstalling iTunes your best option.

Well, for whatever reason, your iPad isn't showing up in your list there. If it were, it would look similar to this:
itunes_filesharing.jpg
itunes_filesharing.jpg (9.38KiB)Viewed 10927 times
That's where you need to go to update your iPad's operating system... as well as sync your iPad with your music, videos, and photos, apps, restore the iPad to factory settings, etc... by what you're describing, you haven't been able to do any of that, or lost that ability somehow.

I guess the next question is, are you on a Mac or PC?

When you plug in your iPad, does the iPad's screen indicate that it is connected or syncing or anything like that?

Mark,

I have been plugging the iPad into my PC until I get tired. Then I plug it into the charger .

But now I have using itures to run support and right now I can't even use itures.

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order:

iTunes
QuickTime
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support
Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Important: You may see various alert messages if you uninstall these applications in a different order or only uninstall certain components.

For detailed steps on removing and reinstalling iTunes and related components on Windows XP, refer to the following steps:

Removing iTunes
Removing QuickTime
Removing Apple Software Update
Removing Apple Mobile Device Support
Removing Bonjour
Removing Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Verify iTunes and related components are completely uninstalled
Reinstalling iTunes and related components
After verifying that iTunes is completely uninstalled, you should download and install the latest version of iTunes.

then I found another site that used Windows XP and Apple and they said

When I received notice to update my iTunes to version 10, I ran into the error message about Bonjour and not having access to the folder. I solved it by:
1. Uninstalling iTunes
2. Uninstalling QuickTime
3. Uninstalling Bonjour, or trying to. When I couldn't, I deleted the Bonjour folder in C:\Programs.
4. I downloaded all three programs from the Apple site to my desktop.
5. I rebooted my computer.
6. I installed Bonjour.
7. I installed QuickTime.
8. I installed iTunes.
All my music was still there and everything is working well. I think it helps to uninstall and install the programs in the above order.

and ---
Go to this website to fix it: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/200 ... ponderexe/ I just found this website, I followed the instructions and I was able to delete the bonjour file. It is really simple to do. Hope it will work for you guys. My ipod is working fine now.

right now I can't even get itures.

You know, you can update your iPad's operating system on anyone's computer, even ones it isn't synced with. For the immediate task of updating your iPad, why don't you just use someone else's computer with working iTunes to update it's operating system.

I'm at a total loss with regards to what is happening to your PC, but I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that it's a PC. Hopefully somebody can come to your rescue here.

That means you have to change your password in Settings -> Mail -> Accounts.
