no local sync in Mavericks

Post by Aude » January 22nd, 2014, 3:36 am

I unthinkingly upgraded to Mavericks without realizing I could no longer sync my iPhone. Does it matter? Can I just keep running the iPhone? It's only a 3 so I suppose there are no upgrades. Dittto iPod. I'm worried about losing the CD music I have put on iTunes if I join iCloud.

What do you mean you can't sync your iPhone? I can sync my iPhone with my Mavericks computers just fine. Not sure I understand?

I mean I would like to sync it with my USB cable but apparently I have to join iCloud and possibly lose all the CD music I have put on my computers and other devices.

I sync my iPhone with my USB cable and Mavericks hasn't changed anything. Joining iCloud doesn't delete all your music from iTunes. Not really sure how you got that idea?

EDIT: also, iCloud is great it saves your contacts and even your phone settings and app store purchases and everything. Why wouldn't you want that?

Oh, good news all round then! I had heard iTunes-in-the-Cloud only kept music purchased from iTunes.

The iCloud part is just a backup, and I'm not sure whether it will keep music you ripped from CDs or downloaded outside of the iTMS. However it doesn't delete those from your iTunes library and you will continue to sync using that library.

Thanks for the explanation about the music. This is the source of myUSB idea:

seems to imply USB syncing is over: I did look here first!

It says right there on that post
Mavericks and iTunes 11 still support manually sync and backup, and wifi sync and backup. Nobody need actually use iCloud for anything if they choose not to.
I don't know what the rest of those people are talking about. I personally have synced my iPhone to Mavericks a bunch so, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Great. Thank you very much!

Have now downloaded my photos and kept my music, but there is nothing about Contacts.

Should I join iCloud to transfer Contacts to my computer? Is that why the Apple support people were worrying?

You should just join iCloud, period. There is no reason to avoid it.

Thanks, again, Turboladde. Maybe my printer will start working again then, too!
