Now that I've sprung for a CD-R one of the things I would like to do with
it is move old recordings (tapes, and albums) over to CD's. I have access
to an AV-mac and enough stereo equipment to connect the two, but what sorts
of software (and additional hardware) if any do I need to get sounds from
these sources into the Mac and then to write them back out to CD's.

Subject: Finder memory errors?
Lately I seem to have more than a few 'Finder Error #10' errors which
freeze up the machine and require a forced restart (CMD-OPT-PWR). I get the
feeling that it's the Finder running into memory problems. At least that
what it used to be when I had similar problems back in the day.
So I used to make a copy of the Finder, increase the memory allocation of
the non-active copy, then switch, rename and reboot so that the new,
memory-increased version was used.
Then I found Finder HeapFix, which specifically allowed me to ramp up the
Finder's heap memory.
But with OS 8 came no way that I can tell for me to specify or increase the
memory allotted to the Finder, and I don't think that the dynamic scheme is
handling the things I keep trying and adding - iType, WindowMonkey,
TypeIt4Me, MyEyes, Help2Icon, etc. Also ActionUtilities, FinderPop, EZNote,
Snapz, PopUpCD, NoDesktopCleanup, Eudora Thing et al.
I don't use them all or even necessarily load them all, but I do like
trying things out and I'm constantly looking for specific solutions for
different clients so I can't "just not use the 3rd party stuff".
Is anyone having similar problems specifically with the #10 error
condition? Or solved it?

Is anybody else getting this finder error (from MacsBug)
where the error is:
PowerPC illegal instruction at FFC10000 _RelString+0044C
and always after a click'n'drag of a file from one place to another in the

I've tried a reinstall of 8.5 from scratch. I cannot duplicate this problem
on demand, but it hits me fairly regularly, at least once a week, sometimes
twice in a single session. My control panels and extensions are fairly
non-descript, fairly standard Apple extensions, but nothing that fools

With OS 7.5 through 8.1 you could set PC Exchange to load drivers for any

I have a friend who runs a company that makes signs. Right now
their production is done on a PC and they are sick of the
unreliability and hardware problems. I argued that while a PC is
cheaper to purchase the cost of running a Mac is definitely
lower. They are willing to consider switching, but only if they
can find the equivalent software on a Mac.
They use a program called Sign Wizards, which is Windows only.
If they were to purchase a Mac they would need to connect it to a
600 mm plotter to cut vinyl for signage. So any sign writing
program that is Apple compatible and would work with a Mac would
be a valid substitute.
Anybody got any suggestions?
Please respond to me as well as the list and I'll make sure to

Subject: Soundmaster-frivolous problem
Fellow InfoMac readers>
I've been using SoundMaster on various Macs for years, and if any control
panel has helped me feel friendly towards my machine this has been number
1. My favourite sound is a toilet flush, which I have linked to emptying
the trash bin. For some reason this sound does not work with system 8.1
(works fine with 7.5.5 and earlier), though the other sounds do. I can't
work out why. At first I thought it was that the link of the flush to the
"Empty Trash" didn't work because my trash can said 'Wastebasket' (uk
system), but this can't be so as I've seen the same link work on other (pre
8.1 sys) machines which have 'Wastebasket' instead of 'Trash'.
Help appreciated. My SoundMaster is 1.8.3b. I've tried searching for a
newer version on the net but can't find one anywhere. I think it's not
supported anymore. It was developed by Bruce Tomlin, so the 'About
SoundMaster' says.

Subject: tricking the processor (OS installation) (A)
Hi,
If 8.1 and 8.5 were designed to work on 68030, Apple would have made it
very clear, because they were blamed a lot about that. Those softwares are
progresively more PPC native, so with a 68030 there is nothing to gain.
With a 68030, 7.6.1 is the end of the road. Also, it would be incredibly
slow, because the system is much bigger and takes a lot of space. There is
also the issue of memory. My actual system is taking over 20 megs. So, on a
68030 machine limited to 36 megs, there would be some problems running
softwares like Netscape.

Subject: Umax clone - Syjet problems
Can anyone help with the following problem?
I have a Umax (Apus 2000 - 603e - 160) running under 7.5.5 with 54xx/64xx
update) which I use for small DTP work. Recently for a book I was forced into
getting a cartridge drive capable of holding at least 1.5 GB and after
studying the reviews etc. I purchased a Syjet.
Unfortunately I am now on my fifth drive since mid - June. The last two
drives have both failed in what are very similar circumstances, namely either
transferring documents from the internal IDE 1.2 GB drive to the Syjet or
comparing various folders on the hard drive with the Syjet. By the sound the
Syjet makes it is as if the Syjet heads do not appear to be able to find the
address they are looking for. The system then responds with an error or hangs
up, and if I am copying files I get a file write error. The crash causes
physical damage to both drive and cartridge. The cartridges are not
recoverable using either Syquest utilities or FWB Hard Disk Tool Kit. The
problem initially occurred using Silverlining as the Syjet driver but also
occurs using either the new Syquest utilities or PCExchange. PCExchnge not
only has had a similar crash but also fails to eject the cartridge.
Initially Syquest technical support UK just put this down to bad cartridges
and replaced them. When it occurred again they changed drive and cartridges
now after a third crash they suggest I have a driver clash. As Syquest has
ceased trading I have had to pay for the drive to be repaired and I cannot
trustthe information I am getting from the company who is now giving UK
technical support.
Umax technical support suggest that I should upgrade to a more recent OS and
or replace the IDE drive with a SCSI drive.
Can anyone offer anymore reliable assistance as I dare not reconnect the Syjet
until I have resolved the problem.
The system is currently suffering some instabilities as I am now experiencing
frequent system crashes, the most common of which is unable to shut the system
down as an unknown application has failed to quit . Another fairly common
problem is losing the preferences file for MS Office. This does not stop
office from running properly but does cause the previous error to appear on
shut down. I have also had some application freeze either whilst running or
on start-up.
