Ben:
I surmise from the description that D. Dowling had MS Office installed
but one of the components was missing so it wouldn't run. Having that
component wouldn't help you if you didn't already have MS Office
installed.
If someone is trying to get data to you, have them save it in a
generic format. RTF or ASCII text for word processing documents and
tab delimited text or SYLK for spreadsheets.
If you don't have the option or are desperate to get the data, then
your best bet is to cough up for a copy of Dataviz's MacLink Deluxe.
It probably costs about =A385 if it's available there.
Good luck.

Subject: (C) finally, a slots game for a PowerPC Mac!
Dear Digest reader,
I wandered into CompUSA today to their Mac section, and what did I
find? http://www.masque.com has released a crossplatform CD for a
PowerPC Mac called IGT slots. It requires 24MB of RAM, and a
PowerPC Mac, and works wonderfully on my Powerbook G3/233 with no
extra graphics card. If anyone else knows of good crossplatform
CDs, please speak up...it is one of the great unspoken truths about
the Mac is that so many games come in crossplatform CDs, and usually
are only found if you look closely at the packaging.
Sincerely,

Subject: [*] Add-Strip 3.4: Superior Text processing utility
Add-Strip 3.4 - TEXT documents created on a PC or a mainframe are
invariably formatted inappropriately for use on a Macintosh. They
often contain
unnecessary control characters, carriage returns, the wrong kind of
quotation and apostrophe marks, and so forth. Manually reformatting
these documents can be a tedious and time-consuming task. Add/Strip
(A/S) has been designed to automatically perform much of the work of
cleaning up TEXT files destined for import to page layout, word
processing, database, or spreadsheet programs, as well as export from
these programs to a PC or mainframe computer. All in a fraction of
the time needed to manually reformat using a word processor. It can
also batch-search-and-replace a folder of textfiles with up to 250
replacements, begin-of-file & end-of-file inclusions.

do you use your Mac for receiving faxes ? Do you depend on your Mac
being up and running all the time ? Unfortunately, Macintosh

business at worst.
Have a look at AutoBoot. AutoBoot is a Control Panel that restarts

Features:
The user interface (UI) in CodeWizard is very self-explanatory.
Application consist of only one window, where all functions are
performed. The needed feature is chosen from 7 tabs. The last tab
(MultiSearch) combines all CodeWizard's conversion methods in one
function, but it's easier to use specific methods if you need only
one type of conversion, because then you can build a list of several
conversions (for example Hex code to character).
CodeWizard supports Drag&Drop, so you can drag desired conversions to

Subject: [*] Desktop Resetter 2.2.1
What is Desktop Resetter?
Desktop Resetter is a simple program used to store (remember) the icon and
window locations and sizes on the desktop. This information can be restored
(reset) at a later time, should they change or move, etc.
Desktop Resetter is an application only, it uses no extensions or control
panels. This helps reduce the possibility of it conflicting with other
programs. It only operates when you launch it and doesn't effect other
applications other than the Finder itself (the desktop application).
Requirements
Any Power Mac or 68k Mac running Mac OS 7.6 or higher. This program is Mac
OS 8.0, 8.6, and 9.0 savvy! Desktop Resetter works great with iMacs,
Powerbooks and G4's.
What's New in 2.2.1?
€ Fixes a problem on some machines (especially laptops with PCMCIA cards)
where the desktop was never remembered. This problem was introduced with
2.2.
€ No need to re-register whenever a new update is downloaded from this point
on.
€ An 'Extras' tab was added to the settings box. This lets you choose how
Desktop Resetter remembers the icons on the desktop. It also allows you to
turn the grid options of the desktop back on after a reset. Some users have
problems with this (where the icons would go back), so it is now your option
to have it on or not.
What's New in 2.2?
€ Desktop Resetter now remembers icons and windows even if they have the
same name, or if the name changes! Older versions didn't work properly if
icons had identical names.
€ Fixed a bug in OS 9 where buttons wouldn't be reset. It should now reset
icons and windows regardless of the configuration of the monitor.
€ The popup windows should work better with multiple monitors when
resetting.
€ Added more menus to allow more control with Desktop Resetter, and now
there are default buttons in the dialog for power users.
€ All new icon. If you are a veteran Desktop Resetter user, it may not show
up until the next time you rebuild your desktop.

site at one go
Author: Ton Brand
Company: Ton's Software
License: Shareware US$ 8.00
Computer: PowerPC
Required: Mac OS 8.6 or later
Abstract:
DupliMizer is an AppleScript program that duplicates your web folder and
optimizes all the web pages contained by it. Drag your web folder to the
program's icon and your whole web site is optimized at one go! There is a
limit to the hierarchical depth that DupliMizer can handle: EIGHT levels,
which must be sufficient in practically all cases. So that lonely page that
resides eight levels deep in a far-away sub-folder is also optimized. A
detailed log with tab-delimited data is saved to DupliMizer's parent folder.
DupliMizer needs on average 5 seconds to optimize one file (on a 225 MHz
computer).
Mac OS 8.6 or later is needed because of the AppleScript Update that came
with it. You also need the Scripting Addition (osax) "ACME Script Widgets".

FileT&C Pro is an useful application for changing file type and/or creatorŠ
It's very useful for normal desktop usage, but is really cool when works, fine, fast and in background, with a lot of files. Also it can scan, quickly, disks and folders looking for files to treat...
FileT&C Pro is Internet Config aware and has a couple of options to change, according to name extension, following the Internet Config File Mapping: you may instruct it to change only files matching the File Mapping or just use your setting when there are no matches inside File Mapping. Naturally it may totally ignore Internet Config.
Internet Config has a great Database containing Types/Creators: FileT&C Pro allows you to use it, when you should insert a new Type/Creator. You may easily modify this Database...
FileT&C Pro has some useful hot keys for changing, on the fly and skipping any dialog, by using the preferred type/creator set in the preferences and for modifying the preferences before changing. You can also instruct it to ignore during its performance, some kind of files or to treat only some other specific types.
After all you may use the enclosed Contextual Menu Extension for asking FileT&C Pro to change your selection.
FileT&C Pro is Macintosh Drag and Drop and Navigation Manager aware, it's Appearance savvy and requires at least System 7 to run.

Subject: [*] StuffCM 2.6J - Japanese Version
This is the Japanese version of the StuffCM package.
*Rated at 5 Cows (highest rating) from Tucows: http://www.tucows.com/
**Check out MacUpdate's review of StuffCM at
http://www.macupdate.com/reviews/adam/stuffcm.html: "StuffCM is such a
sublime addition to the Mac OS, it's a wonder that it's not built in."
StuffCM is a contextual menu plugin that works with Aladdin Systems' StuffIt
Engine. It can stuff, unstuff, convert, BinHex, segment and join files
directly in the Finder through the contextual menu commands.
The StuffCM package also includes a control panel with lots of settings to
play with, plus the option to assign modifier keys to toggle those settings
on the fly. And it's 100% Appearance Manager savvy! Plus it supports
contextual menus - something many of Apple's own control panels don't!
The History
2.6
- Rebuilt with StuffIt SDK 5.5
- Added the ability to zip and MacBinary-encode files (with StuffIt Engine 5.5)
- Fixed the BinHex creator type field to actually allow input without beeping.

Worlds Apart: An Interactive Fugue
By Suzanne Britton ([email protected])
Version 2.0
http://www.igs.net/~tril/worlds/
Getting Started
This is a TADS game, and therefore requires a TADS or HTML TADS
interpreter. Specifically, it requires an up-to-date (2.5.1 or better)
interpreter. This package includes HyperTADS 1.1.3, which is an HTML
TADS interpreter for the Macintosh based on HTML TADS 2.5.1. It should
be everything you need to play the game. If HyperTADS doesn't suit you,
there are other TADS interpreters for the Macintosh. Check the TADS Page
at http://www.tela.bc.ca/tela/tads/ for advice on how to obtain and
install the right interpreter for your system.
If you do not use HyperTADS, you should set your display to use a
fixed-width font if you can. Otherwise, formatting will look odd in a
few places.
If Interactive Fiction is a new thing to you, or you just want to
refresh your memory, you can get some general playing instructions
within the game by typing INSTRUCTIONS. Specific information on Worlds
Apart is available by typing ABOUT, and hints are available via the HINT
command.
This work is copyrighted freeware. The game package may be distributed
on all public archives.
The Worlds Apart homepage is located at
http://www.igs.net/~tril/worlds/. Check there for information on new
releases.

You could try to run the updater once more on your (obviously already
updated) Eudora version. In fact, under the "Help" menu at the far right
of your menu bar you should see some Eudora-specific items, starting
with "About this release".
Do you have your registration code which should have been created during
the update process?
I had no problem to update on a Powerbook G3/MacOS 8.6 and on a Quadra
650 PPC / MacOS 7.6.1.
Best wishes, Christian.

Not so on my vernerable 6400. The physical speaker-volume switches on the
CPU and the CP settings do seem to work. This may not be the case with
PowerBooks.

really? Every time I start from a CD (such as the Mac OS 8.5 installer)
and then reboot, my boot chord is reduced in volume. It's also this way if
my main System gets hosed and I boot from one of the emergency partitions.
But I remember a note about silencing a Powerbook boot chord back on the
System 7 days; it required an earplug. I thought that since then the boot
chime paid attention to the sound volume. It seems so from what I've
experienced.
