Subject: $150,000 to spend -- suggestions? (Q)
Hi all,
I find myself in the very happy position of having up to about $100-150k to
spend on Macintosh equipment for between 30 and 50 users, the majority of
whom will require two machines. As I'm not exactly used to being in this
position, I'd like to hear from anyone with specific suggestions on what to
buy.
As this equipment will be used for software development and testing, we
need pretty high-spec machines. I can pretty much work out for myself the
spread of 7500's, 9500's and even 5300's that we need, but I need specific
advice on the following areas:
o What configuration server will I need to support from 50 up to
100 connections at any one time?
Is there any formula which can indicate how much server RAM is
needed per connection?
o Staying with servers, is there a third party software solution
which supports RAID 5 server backup?
o Last server question: how good an option are Novell and NT
Services for Macintosh?
o Is the PowerBook 5300 series fast enough to invest heavily in
it, or should I hold off for a better chip that the 603e?
o Is a _pair_ of 14-inch monitors connected to one machine a
good alternative to a single 17-inch monitor?
Thanks in advance for any advice. Needless to say, I WILL summarise any
responses I receive, either through a posting to this list or via my
soon-to-be-revamped home page (the URL will follow).
Finally, please note that this mail is not an RFQ. If I'm going to put a
tender out I'll do that through other channels in a month or two. At the
moment, I'm just looking for some information.
Thanks again for tolerating such a long post.

Subject: 2 Macs, i Printer
Greetings all Mac advocates, evangelists, &/or devotes,
I have an old faithful Mac II ci & a *very* new faithful (I hope!) PowerWave
604/132. I plan to set up a TAN (tiny area network), but for reasons with
which I won't bore you, I can't just yet.
- My problem: I have only one printer, a LaserWriter NTR.
--- Shall I leave it connected to my Mac II ci or connect it to my 604/132?
--- What software adjustments are best so that files on one machine
(whichever) print properly on the other machine (also whichever).
I've never before had a Mac without a connected printer, but I do remember,
in the dim, dark past when I had a dot-matrix printer, doing something or
other so that I could put Mac II ci files on floppies, & the files would
print properly on a friend's LaserWriter. I really don't mind sneaker-net or
floppy-net until I set up the TAN (at which point I'll subject you all to
other questions), so simple, even primitive, solutions are O.K.
With heaps of gratitude for the heaps of list readers posting heaps of great
suggestions,
Toby Moore

Subject: 3ds->dxf converter on mac?
hello!
well, i think i'm not the only one:
i am in desperate need of a program that is able to convert
3d studio files into dxf (or fact, or alike) on the mac.
is there any?
is there any 3d-program that is able to read 3ds files?
the only ones i'm aware of (like WCT2POV, Interchange, ModelMunger)
are running exclusively under windows or unix
- none on the mac.
well, maybe i'm just missinformed or...
maybe some developers are listening

Subject: Adobe IntelliDraw (Q)
Does anyone know if Adobe are going to orphan IntelliDraw (formerly an
Aldus product)? Mailshots I've received from Adobe don't mention it, and
the entry for it at the Adobe WWW site is skimpy, to say the least. In
addition, I've never received notification about bug fixes or updates.
I would hate to see IntelliDraw disappear, as there's not a comparable
drawing application available in that price range (sorry, Claris, but
ClarisDraw 1.0v2 just doesn't have all the features I've become used to,
like the ability to add and subtract shapes).
Comments or information, anyone?

Strange... And you write from an academic address in Canada! Look around you a
bit. Canada has switched to the metric system sometime ago. And before you
discuss the stupidity of other systems, get your spelling right. It's
"Fahrenheit" and "Systeme International", with an accent grave over the first

If Graphics Converter cannot do the job, he may know what will or when
Graphics Converter will be able to.

Subject: DOS Card/Win95/MacShare?
Hello everyone,
I installed Windows 95 on my PowerMac 6100/66 DOS Card in order to run
FileMaker Pro 3.0. Several of my FMP files are larger than can fit on a
floppy. Under Windows 3.1, a DOS program called MacShare.exe would allow
you to view a designated folder on your Mac hard drive as a drive in Windows.
This allowed me to drop the files in that drive and then copy them to
other media for backup or transfer to my client's site. MacShare does not
appear to operate under Windows 95, so I seem to have lost this capability.
Any Ideas? Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Subject: Global Village Platinum Disconnects!
I recently purchased a Performa 5300 with a Global Village Platinum modem
installed. I was happy with it until I began to realise that every time I
connect to my ISP or a FC BBS during busy hours I get disconnected. This
only happens, however, when I dial in using their 28.8 lines. If I use the
14.4 line I am never disconnected. This has led me to believe that the
modem has a problem with online services which have both 14.4 and 28.8
lines.
Doos anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happening or any
solutions to help solve the problem? I called Apple Canada and they were of
no help to me.
Thanks, Trish

This is not specific to the PCI Mac, but I feel it might be of interest. If=
not, I apologize so please don't flame me. =
Because of a special offer, I decided to have ISDN installed. I attended Ma=
cWorld last week, and here is what I've found concerning ISDN that may help=
others. =
1. Installing ISDN makes your analog phones unusable. To use an analog phon=
e, you have to use a terminal adapter. So far, I have not found anyone who =
sells just these terminal adapters--even BellSouth. In fact, a call to Bell=
South resulted in the ISDN center not knowing anything about hardware to co=
nnect to an ISDN line. I've read that there are ISDN phones, but no one kno=
ws where to get them. I walked into an ATT phone center and asked if they h=
ad any ISDN phones or equipment. The sales people thought I was referring t=
o a brand name. After explaining ISDN to them, they had no idea where to ge=
t a phone. =
2. The ISDN can be installed in your home using existing wiring (works grea=
t as a second line). However, home jacks are all RJ11. ISDN connectors are =
RJ45. Make sure you get an RJ45 jack or cord. So far, Radio Shack and other=
electronic companies I talked to (including those at MacWorld) do not have=
RJ11 to RJ45 adapters. In fact, many of the people I talked to at MacWorld=
think ISDN is a brand name (like IBM). =
3. After many calls, I find that ISDN equipment for the Macintosh is very s=
parse. Here is what I found: =
3Com (http://www.3com.com) has one (suppossedly), but calls to 3Com have no=
t been returned yet. Mail order firms listed in the 3Com site do not have t=
he product. 3Com was not at MacWorld. =
Rockwell has one that looks pretty nice. It is an internal Nubus or PCI car=
d, 2 or 4 channel. Home users would probably get the 2 channel (since a sin=
gle ISDN line has 2 channels). Price is $700-$1400. However, the product is=
not expected until Mar-Apr time frame at the earliest, and who does the ac=
tual marketing has not been decided. =
Fallaron (http://www.fallaron.com) just introduced their single user ISDN m=
odem. It was on display at MacWorld. Again, it is not expected until late A=
pril. Price more than $700. =
Motorolla (http://www.mot.com) has the Bitsurfer for the PC. Motorolla was =
at MacWorld, and I talked to the ISDN expert (since no one from their ISDN =
sales has yet returned my calls). The 'expert' didn't have a clue about the=
Macintosh. She claimed that the PC version would work directly out to the =
box on the Mac. She forgot the cable is different, but didn't know what typ=
e of cable to use (high speed modem cable? or just a serial cable?). I then=
asked how the user configured the modem (to set up the channel(s) to be us=
ed. She said it was done from the modem, but had no idea how to do it. She =
says she does it from her PC--which means software. She then said she didn'=
t know if the modem could be configured then on the Mac, but she thought it=
could. Basically, she had no idea. The Mac version will not be out (contra=
ry to reports) for a couple more months. Calls to the mail order houses fin=
d both the Bitsurfer and Bitsurfer Pro, but no sales rep could tell me the =
difference. =
US Robotics (http://www.primenet.com/usr/) displayed their new ISDN modem f=
or the Mac (along with the Courier 28.8 V.Fast everything). Considering it =
took them a year to come out with the Courier for the Mac (after the PC ver=
sion), I don't look for the ISDN modem anytime soon. They claim that the Ma=
c version will be out in 3-6 months. No idea if the PC version will work or=
not. One nice feature was two analog ports, one for each channel. This was=
the only modem I saw that had this. =
Supra (http://www.supra.com) and Global Tech said they had nothing in the i=
mmediate works. =
That's it. I hope this helps other potential ISDN users. If there are any B=
itsurfer Mac users, I'd appreciate your help in suggestions on what to do. =
If anyone knows of a source of ISDN equipment, I'd again appreciate your he=
lp. Thanks. =

Subject: Linking to JPEGView 3.1
Hi everybody,
well let see. A fedw days ago I was view a JPEG picture from a
newsgroup using JPEGView 3.3.1, playing around with size, smooth
edging, etc.; the name of the picture file was pb01961.jpg .
So far so good, but when I used Netscape 2.0b5 and wanted to see
in-line JPEG, it went to the routine to get the picture downloaded.
In the window for the download it said: "Will open with "pb01961.jpg"."
When the download wasd completed a window opened and it said:
"Netscape could not open the document kona1.jpg with application
pb01961.jpg due to unexpected error. You might be aqble to open the
document manually. What do you want to do with downloaded document
"kona1.jpg". Delete document or save document ?"
I'm sure it is not a problem with Netscape or JPEGView, because I
downloaded JPEGView again after I deleted every refernece of it, same
thing happened.
I also use InternetConfig 1.2 and in the preferences for file mapping
were I set JPEGView up for JPEG,TIFF, etc. it said the application is
"pb01961.jpg" not JPEGView, but it has the icon of JPEGView.
So I think it has to be something in a database for file types,
resources, or what the heck else. I did a rebuild of the desktop no
change.
Well I'm lost and need some advice, help, hint, tip.
I will appreciate any response on this.
Thanks, Rainer

Subject: Shareware or Lockware?
Hi,
We would like to share something about the shareware. Whatb we
understand (and expect) about shareware is that we try it for
sometime and if satisfied, pay the shareware fee. About 50% of the
shareware developers follow these guidelines. But some shareware(or
should we say lockware) programs really disappoint us. For example,
the other day after seeing the Info-mac digest, we downloaded
Sonata- but greatly disappointed. We didn't get a chance to try out
the features - not even 25% until the shareware fees paid. As it is
their previlege to demand like this, it is also our previlege to be
informed of this in advance while posting the release notice.
On the contrary, in Freehand 5.5 demo version (more than 7 mb), we
get a chance to try 90% of the features except that we can't save
our work ( of course we can in our own way - shift+command+3 ).
