Keywords: chemistry, synthetic project calculation, efficiency analysis.

ChemProject is a program for the evaluation of a chemical synthesis in
terms of material amounts and their costs, featuring a highly intuitive
graphical interface. A synthesis can consist of a main branch and up to
15 connected branches. Data are analyzed for process efficiency ac-
cording to a wide selection of criteria. Material prices may conveniently be
imported from customizable and freely combinable price lists. A variety of
detailed, carefully designed print reports is provided (the demo-version
allows previews only).

Subject: [*] FaberQuencer 1.0.2; some KeyQuencer extensions

These extensions, formerly bundled with KeyQuencer, are now separately
released as shareware.

BalloonHelp (turns BH on/off/toggles)
ChoosePrinter (selects a printer driver; still not network-aware)
Shutdown (restart/shutdown; now compatible with the latest Shutdown Delay)
UnmountFO (unmounts a volume)

For obvious reasons, BalloonHelp and Shutdown require System 7.
The System 6-compatible extensions are now available in System 7-only
compiled form, to reduce their memory footprint as much as possible.

New since 1.0 & 1.0.1:

ResEdit or some other system component deemed it appropriate to reduce to
zero the contents of the help resource in the Unmount extension.
recompiled with MoreFiles 1.4.1.

Enjoy!

Subject: [*] MacFlash 1.0d7 - Flashcard editor and quizzer

MacFlash is a flashcard editor and a quizzer for the Macintosh.
It features two programs, an editor and a quizzer. Decks created by
MacFlash feature multiple cards types, including plain text
(your normal question and answer types), a multiple choice card,
a picture card, and a multiple answer card, with the potential for
additional types to be implements by the author. The quizzer features
the ability to adjust the way the answers are checked, as well as many
ways to score your deck. Included are two sample decks, an amino acid
deck and a french noun deck.

Note that this is a development version: I have tried to make every
attempt to verify that this program will not damage your computer
in any way, however, YOU ARE USING THIS PROGRAM AT YOUR OWN RISK!

MacFlash is distributed as donatationware: if you would like to
see improvements to this program, please send $5 to the author
(address included in this archive).

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PREVIOUS USERS OF MACFLASH: Please read the
documentation, as there as been some major changing in the format of the
deck files and preferences files that may cause you to crash. Instructions
for dealing with these are listed in the docs. Also new with this version
is Drag and Drop editing, timed responses in the quizzer, several
internal rewrites to make the code more 'dynamic', lots of bug fixes and
a few face-lift improvements.

Subject: [*] MJS Custom Icons

This is the second time I have posted these icons to the public (the first
sets had been removed from the archives... DOH!) I have repackaged them,
and added a few extras to the mix for excitement. The icons are now stored
in 3 groups:

MJS Custom Icons - Set 1: Basic items such as plain folders, system
folders, and disks.
MJS Custom Icons - Set 2: Customized folders, with goofy names and many
clever uses.
MJS Custom Icons - Set 3: Familiar icons for hard drives, network servers,
etc. Lotsa fun!

I don't plan on supporting or adding to the collection, but I felt an
obligation to repost the icons since they generated so much mail in the
past. The icons are stored as simple folders with custom icons, so you
should be able to simply Get Info, select the icon, then select Copy from
the Edit menu. To apply an icon, do the same thing to the desired file,
folder, or volume, but select Paste instead.

Please feel free to redistribute the icon archives on the Internet AS A
WHOLE (including my documentation), but be sure to carefully label any
changes in format or content that you make.

The file beings submitted is a demo for Odyssey: The Legend of
Nemesis, a new role playing game for the Macintosh, published by
MacSoft. This is version 1.01 containing numerous bug fixes, and is
especially important (vital, even) to people running on a Macintosh
with a system earlier than 7.5 and without Sound Manager 3.0 (or greater)
installed. This new file replaces the pervious file
"odyssey-demo.sit.hqx", which should be deleted from archives in favor
of this newer version. Further Odyssey information can be gleaned from
the READ ME file included in the archive.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Odyssey: The Legend of Nemesis requires any Macintosh
capable of displaying 256 colors or grays, with System 7 or
later, and 2552k of RAM free. 3064k free for stereo sound
effects. The musical soundtrack requires that Quicktime 2.0
(or later) and Quicktime Musical Instruments are installed
(both of these ship with the Odyssey CD). Odyssey is
PowerMac native.

The full version of Odyssey: The Legend of Nemesis is available now.

The ScaleListMIN XFCN takes a delimited list of values, removes the
lowest values and returns:

a) The "average" of the remaining items.
b) The original list with the lowest values removed.

The user decides how many values to remove from the original list and
defines the "item delimiter."

This external is most useful in grade or score-keeping applications where
you wish to figure a scaled or curved note. For example, if, in a given
course, only the top 30 of 35 homework scores were to be included in a
final grade, ScaleListMIN would automatically drop the 5 lowest scores and
return an adjusted average. This external is provided as "AnyWare." That
is, if you use it, please let me know by sending "Anything" you have
cluttering up your desktop: a poem you've written, a picture of your dog,
a program you've developed, money, a postcard from your hometown etc. -
just something to let me know that these programs are being used and that
they're not gathering cyberdust in a virtual warehouse somewhere. (Please

Time Teacher also has the option of saying time in spanish or english.

Dear devoted Info-Mac members,

In response to my earlier post (excerpt below), several kind & concerned

Well, I really *didn't* want to bore you with my personal problems--but
perhaps you'll find them fascinating. At the very least, I do see that a
workable solution to my problem requires that I pour my heart out. At the
present time, I have no single room in my dwelling into which I can fit 2
computers, 1 printer, 2 modems, & 1 scanner. This situation will be rectified
in about three to four months, but in the meantime, the computers will have
to be in separate rooms a considerable distance from each other--at least 35
feet (if not more). Running cables &/or wires for 35 or 40 feet is,
naturally, just not practicable.

The excellent advice some of you sent me will be implemented when the daffys
bloom in the spring, & I do thank you from the bottom of my little heart
because without your advice I would have made some time-consuming & rather
disasterous mistakes when my Macs commenced their closer physical
relationship. But for now, how can both Macs work with the single printer
despite the distance between them? As I said in my earlier post, even
primitive solutions (e.g. sneaker-net) are acceptable. But I do need to be
able to print files constructed/designed/formatted on *both* Macs on the
single LaserWriter right now.

Once again, thank you notes, as my Mum taught me, & updates will be
forthcoming when I return from exile in PC Land. However, all email solutions
eagerly awaited at present.

MMM (missing my macs),
Toby Moore

BTW, yes, I know the PowerWave 604 is not a "real" Mac, but it's so Mac-like,
it's hard to call it anything else. And it *is* offended when referred to as
a mere clone.

Subject: [A] DeskWriter 540 !!!HELP

The problem with HP DeskWriter drivers is that they are complete memory hogs.
The advice that Connectix doles out with RamDoubler may help here.
Before printing, fire up as many apps as you can, so that only about 800K-1MB
of
free RAM is left...then use background printing. The problem is that the HP
driver grabs all available memory, and that screws things up. HP has been
putting out great printers with lousy drivers for years. The 540 is no
exception.

Daniel, I fully agree with your comments regarding the metric system and
would like to advise you that Canada has converted to that system many
years ago. We still see remnants of the old sytem hanging around in the
grocery stores where they often use both and I still have tools made for
both systems which makes things very expensive.

However, the new generation of students are learning only the new one and
it wont be too long before we are totally metricized.

Is there some prog that works with Zterm and Firstclasss, or just
generally watches the serial port for outgoing calls, then records them
in a log file?

Please email me!

Thanks
Dan

Subject: OneClick

At MacExpo in SF last week, I picked up a neat little utility called
OneClick (WestCode Software 1-800-448-4250).

OneClick is an order of magnitude better than anything out there. I
tried to read QuickKey's manual several times, but was always feeling
uncomfortable. OneClick is EASY!

It creates floating pallets for:

1) active applications, so you can change back and forth
2) your selected favorite applications, for ease of launch
3) all your system functions, including alternating between windows,
chooser, close all and shut down, dump trash, volume control, dialer
(with database), make folder, etc. etc. etc.

The system functions only take ONE click for any control panel, any
extension, any any! No more pull down menues for the most used
functions. Yea!

I can't tell you how much function this has added to my PowerMac. It
also is fully scriptable.

Mostly, I just can't believe someone didn't do this back in 1985.

Subject: Ram Doubler enhancement extension/CP

Hi Robert,

I think you're looking for MaxRAM (latest version is 1.6?).

>>Some time ago, about 1-2 years, I saw someone using a Ram Doubler
enhancement tool on their Mac. It allowed Ram Doubler to make the memory as
much as 4 - 6 times greater instead of the normal doubling. Does anyone know
what it was called, where I can find it, and if I should use it or not? If I
remember correctly, it was either an extension or control panel, not an
application.>>>MaxRAM is a $5 shareware program that works in conjunction with Connectix
RAM Doubler 1.6 on Macs and PowerMacs, allowing you to have SIX times as much
memory. Normally, RAM Doubler will double your RAM, but with the help of
MaxRAM, you can have SIX times the installed memory. That's right - SIX. For
example, if you have 8MB of real RAM in your Macintosh, MaxRAM will give you
48MB of RAM.

MaxRAM, to function properly, requires the following:

- RAM Doubler 1.6. MaxRAM 1.6 ONLY works with RAM Doubler 1.6.
- System 7.0 or newer.
- 32-bit Addressing should be turned on in the Memory control panel.

MaxRAM works only in conjunction with RAM Doubler with the following
requirements: a 68030 or 68040 microprocessor, or a 68020 microprocessor with
a PMMU, or a PowerPC microprocessor, and at least 4MB of real RAM. MaxRAM
does not work on older 68000 series Macintoshes that have been upgraded with
an accelerator. Compact Virtual (from Connectix) or OptiMem (from Jump
Development) can be used on those machines.been working on a similar problem over the last few weeks. It appears to be
>a bug in RAM Doubler with regard to asynchronous disk I/O. (Don't worry if

I wonder if this is causing an incompatibility I'm seeing with Retrospect
v3.0 and Ram Doubler.

system 7 tune-up 1.1.1 is a tuner for system 7 not 7.1
the tuner replaces previous versions 1.0 and 1.1 because they're buggy.

system 7.1 can be tuned by system update 3.0 and the multimedia (2.x)
updater but it doesn't change the system version.

system 7.1.1 and 7.1.2 were powermac versions that shipped with the first
wave of 6100's, 7100's and 8100's

you should be able to find the updaters at the same ftp site above. check
the readme files or go to the tech support web page at www.apple.com

Subject: What makes a doc open an app?

Hello Info-Mac-ers,

Today an old question came up (perhaps an FAQ unknown to me): What makes a
double-clicked document open its associated application?

A week ago I installed the latest version of Microsoft Word (6.0.1) on a
colleague's new PowerMac 7200/90. However, for comprehensible reasons, the man
has decided to convert gradually from his trusted version 5.1a to the much
suspected new version 6.0.1. So, once again, I installed version 5.1a on his
machine. I know, I know, Microsoft doesn't like the two versions installed on
one machine, but we decided to take the risk anyway.

The problem is: whatever Word file one double-clicks, it starts up version
6.0.1. Even an authentic 5.1a file just created, starts up and is opened in
6.0.1. Word 5.1a has an icon alright (be it that it is the icon of version
6.0.1) and dropping the file on it opens it in 5.1a. But at a double-click the
file denies its origin and opens version 6.0.1.

I have tried a few obvious things like rebuilding the desktop, trashing the
Macintosh Easy Open Preferences and the Finder Preferences files, but to no
avail. I even went as far as to change the creator in the version 6.0.1
application (from MSWD to MSW6) but then the file still doesn't find its real
creator: version 5.1a. Instead there is a message complaining that the
"application Word" cannot be found. Not surprisingly, though: there is (and has
been) no application by that name on the harddisk. Yet, after the creator ID in
6.0.1 is reset to the original MSWD, the file is opened flawlessly
(unfortunately in 6.0.1).

My conclusion is, that there must be some place where the link between the
Microsoft Word 5.1a file (or any MSWD file for that matter) and the Microsoft
Word 6.0.1 application has been stored before version 5.1a was installed on
this
machine. But where? What (preference) file is responsible? In other words: How
can I make Word 5.1a the default application for MSWD files after the system
(or
Microsoft) has decided that Word 6.0.1 is the way to go?

Any guru out there that can shed a light on this? Thanks a lot!

Is it possible that you have an early version of "Adobe Type Reunion"
installed in your Mac? Or perhaps the prefs for ATR is corrupt - try
to delete it (or use the share-/freeware "Type Disunion" on the info-mac
archives which resets everything).

Just a guess. Good luck, Christian.

Subject: Bizzarre Eudora problem

Hello,
I use Eudora 1.5.3 (light). My web page mails me forms in that terrible %
and + based form. Before, when I had my old IIcx, they came down just
looking like nasty messages. Now that I have a PM7200, and I got the PM
native version, Eudora thinks these are all file attachments, and puts them
as the data fork of a file. Does anyone know why this is, or how to fix it?
