I didn't see this recent update for Colonization in the archive so I
thought I'd pass it along. I have no association with Microprose except as
a Colonization owner.

>From the Readme:

Colonization for the Macintosh Update v1.1

1/17/96

Fixes the reported problems with PowerMac AV's and dual
monitors.

To apply update, just copy the update into your Colonization

Subject: [*] CommuniGate-UUCPGate-17

The UUCPGate is a CommuniGate communication module supporting e-mail message
transfer using the uucp protocol and regular modem connections; uucp
communications do not require a direct Internet connection (i.e. they do not
use the TCP/IP protocol).

The UUCPGate module supports multi-line communications and it can support
connections with several other uucp systems (so your CommuniGate system can
be a network provider for other uucp e-mail systems).
The UUCPGate module can work together with the SMTPGate module providing
both TCP/IP and UUCP Internet e-mail. The CommuniGate Router takes care of
directing messages to the proper gate.

Revision History
1.7
* UUCPGate employs the CommuniGate Server E-mail converter (the previous
versions used the converter bult into the UUCPGate). It allows to support
mail coding and other RFC-format related features.
*?The memory leak bug fixed: incoming messages could result in abandoned
short blocks (return-paths) in memory, decreasing the "Largest Unused
Block" size shown in Finder.
*?The bug that could cause failures with the -43 error code was fixed.

1.6
*?The number of string pairs that you can enter for logging into a remote
server is increased to 6.
* The serial ports processing is now compatible with PCI/Open Transport
serial drivers.

1.5.3
*?The X-file commands are processed properly even if the line order is
incorrect.
* The bug causing crashes on 68000 machines when creating a new line is
fixed.

1.5.2
* The bug causing crashes on some machines when displaying the list of
serial ports is fixed.
* Some minor internal enhancements.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate Client 1.8.2

The CommuniGator application is the client part of the CommuniGate integrated
messaging system. It allows you to work with all your messages: e-mail, fax,
voice, pager, etc.

You can use it on the same computer the CommuniGate server is installed on,
and you can install and use it on other computers connected to the server via
network.

The CommuniGate User Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator
application as your messaging environment. It provides information about:
- message composing;
- address books;
- mailboxes;
- operations on messages;
- miscellaneous CommuniGator features;

CommuniGator is used to manage the CommuniGate Server, too: to configure the
server itself or the modules it runs, to control the modules and their queues,
etc. The CommuniGate System Manual explains how you can use the CommuniGator
application to maintain your CommuniGate Server.

See the CommuniGate Installation Manual for installation instructions.

Revision History:

1.8.2
*?Support for 2-byte characters is implemented.
* The "Notification settings" panel changed:
The "Pause between notifications", "if system was not idle for xx seconds"
items added;
*?Text selection bug fixed (after switching to Fax and back w/ closed mailer)
* Attachment List update bug fixed (after switching to Fax w/ closed mailer)
* The "Coding" option implemented.
*?The file routines were fixed for shared volumes. This allows to keep
personal mailboxes on file servers.
* Saving fax pages as 'PICT' files implemented.
* The "Get Next Unread" menu command is implemented. The Control-Enter
shortcut is assigned to it.

1.8.1
* Selection using the arrow keys is implemented in queue windows.
* Opening of the selected letters from queue by pressing "Enter" key is
implemented.
* Opening next/previous unread messages from queue by Command-arrows is
implemented.
* The Trash mailbox is implemented; Command-D shortcut is assigned for "Delete
message" menuitem; The Empty trash? menu item added.
* The emptying trash on session closing is implemented.

Subject: [*] CommuniGate FaxSender 1.9

FaxSender is a print (Chooser) driver to use with the CommuniGate System. It
employs the same Address Books panel as the CommuniGator application, and it
can be used with any application that supports printing. When "FaxSender" is
selected in the Chooser, using the Print command in any application results
in "printing" of the open document on a remote fax machine.

In order to avoid switching between your regular printer driver and
FaxSender, you can have the "FaxSwitcher" extension installed. After you
installed FaxSwitcher, select the FaxSender in the Chooser, and you'll see
the Option button which allows you to set the special-keys combination. You
can set a combination, select your regular printer driver again, and close
the Chooser.

Now, if you press the selected key combination when choosing Page Setup or
Print from an application File menu, the FaxSender driver replaces your
regular printer driver and allows you to fax from an application without
going through the Chooser.

There are two versions of the print driver: a non-networkable (FaxSender)
and a networkable one (FaxSender Network). If you plan to send faxes from
the same computer that runs the CommuniGate Server, you should install the
FaxSender driver on that computer. Install the FaxSender Network on all
other computers on your network.

Revision History
1.9
* Grayscale faxing is implemented
* The Make Default buttons are added.
* Applications that set printer resolution explicitly (QuarkXPress, etc)
scale pages correctly now.
* Delayed addresses are supported now.
* The Receipt option is implemented.

Subject: [*] Easy_PPPTCP_1.3

This is an ASCII text PPP & TCP configuration guide. It is
intended for the intermediate Macintosh user who just needs to know how to
get PPP up and running. There is about .5k of text that is relevant to the
expert computer user, but oh!, what a vital .5k it is.
The beginning Mac user may also benefit from:
info-mac/_Information/_Communication/ez-slip-ppp-mactcp-guide-dm.hqx (336k)
(not written by me) or my soon to be uploaded guide called
ppp_tcp_net_starter_disk. My starter_disk package will provide more
detailed PPP and TCP instructions, much like "ez-slip..." and, using
stuffit installer maker, or just plain old drag and drop, you can use it to
create a 'self-installer' disk which largely automates the task of setting
up PPP by providing preconfigured prefs files - A must for any internet
provider. The _net_ducation part of the guide is not yet implemented. Any
ideas, anyone?

Subject: [*] macpager2demo

Keywords: CALLER ID MACINTOSH PAGER PROGRAM MODEMS

MacPager is a comprehensive call notification software package that forwards
Caller ID and Caller Name Delivery information to ANY numeric or
alphanumeric pager, E-mail address, telephone, or answering machine. It
includes its own caller database, alpha-page and E-mail message dispatcher,
terminal window, and activity log, and can operate in the background
without monopolizing your serial port, allowing you to run MacPager
concurrently with most call-answering software, such as FaxSTF or AppleTalk
Remote Access.

Advantages over other Caller ID software include: *Scripting language allows
connections to ALL text-based E-mail accounts and alpha pagers (not just TAP
pagers!) *Caller ID notification to telephones, car phones, and answering
machines via touchtone sequences *Up to 50 notification destinations
(pagers, E-mail addresses, etc.) are supported *Caller database allows you to
set specific notification options for each caller *Small (500k) memory profile
*Neat "about" screen!

The demo version automatically quits after two hours, and settings are not
saved. Otherwise, it is fully functional and should let you determine if
MacPager will work for you. For ordering and contact information, check out

Here at last are the responses to my request for information

Short Circuit is an action-puzzle Shareware game for the Mac. The object of
the game is to get through 8 worlds, each with a different property, and
clear all the tiles within the alloted time. The catch: tiles can
only be cleared if they have a circuit.

Works on any Macintosh with System 7.x and at least a 640x400 screen,
including PowerBooks.

It works best on a 68030 machine, 256 color monitor, and Sound Manager 3.0.

v.1.2.1 additions:
- Greatly improved animation
- Keyboard equivalents for gadgets
- Several minor touchups

And with instant registration through AutoPay(tm), you get:
- a Strategic Game variation
- Game saving/loading (finally)

I'd also like to say thanks to everyone for their support of this game.
This version would not have been possible without you.

- Thanks!

And now, TheNews ...

TheNews is a Usenet news reader for the Macintosh. With it, you
can read news articles from among the thousands of news groups
available, post new and followup articles, and mail followup
messages to the article posters. The program requires a link to
your news server via MacTCP (Ethernet or LocalTalk), UUCP (using
UUPC 3.x and ToadNews), or the CommToolBox (over your modem).

This is a minor enhancement release:

Enhancements
* Highlighting of quoted text can be changed from default italics to normal,
bold, etc. See manual for details.
* Program used to allocate a large chunk of memory before reading an
article, and then scale back. If the article was larger than what was
allocated, excess lines would be thrown away. Program now allocates
memory as needed.
* Modifications/additions to character translation tables.

Enjoy,

Subject: [*] WWW/HTML Publishing Tool

Please find the attached stuffit archive "mtxtool.sit" containing software
and documentation for MTX, a World Wide Web (HTML) publishing tool.

What is MTX?

MTX is a simplified means for creating Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
documents. HTML is the page layout standard used by the World Wide Web. Unlike
HTML, the MTX format is easy to learn and use. You can use any word processor
or
text editor to create MTX formatted files. The MTX Tool converts these
files into
HTML pages in a matter of seconds. Features of the MTX system include:

Source files are easy to create and maintain
No special editor or editing skills are needed
Timed "make" function for updating HTML files
Consistent stylistic and functional elements
Automatic creation of complex HTML elements:
Document outlines and tables of contents
Home, Parent, Previous, and Next navigational buttons
Key Word Indexes Across Families of Documents
Several types of interactive questions with feedback
Tables, floating graphics, and other extensions
Presentation Slides for the Classroom

You should consider using MTX if you need to:

Convert existing word processing documents into HTML
Create and manage large collections of HTML documents
Integrate HTML documents from several sources and authors
Create interactive question banks with instructional feedback
Create and distribute presentation slides for lectures

The "MTX Tool" stack is compatible with Hypercard 2.1. All MTX materials
are also available at:

Which, the Power Mac or the Mindscape bundle? :-)

Sorry. No, no Power Mac version of System 7 can do 24-bit addressing.
That a company would still be marketing such software is unconscionable.
That they'd put it on a CD is downright weird.

Any chance the manual is wrong, and the package will actually run OK? I'd
call Mindscape and check, if it were my problem.

The 6100 has no VRAM to upgrade: it "steals" system RAM for video. I,
too, searched for alternatives last summer to drive my 6100's monitor to
832x624x16.7M, and settled on a Radius PrecisionColor Pro 24XP NuBus
card. CRA Systems bought the remainder of this discontinued model from
Radius and sells them for $300 (assuming there are any left). The card
will require a $100 6100 NuBus adapter to install it--these have been
very hard to locate in the past, but I found one at a local Computer City
that no longer sells Macs. Do NOT buy the 610 adapter, it will not work!

So, you're asking, why would one want the Radius card instead of the
Apple AV card? Because it's much faster, and it also supports 800x600,
which yields true-WYSIWYG 72 dpi on my 15" NEC 4FGe (after I expanded the
screen image to fill the bezel), vs. ~76 dpi at 832x624. This is
important to me in my design work.

I have heard rumors that the 7100/8100 VRAM card can be made to work, but
the only source is as used parts, and no one has been able to verify to
me how much butchering is necessary to make it fit in a 6100. You
wouldn't save much money, at any rate.

If you have a multi-scanning monitor, you can select 640x480x32,768 in
the Monitors control panel, which may be good enough for your purposes.
It ain't the same, but the price is right...

I agree with John, a nice solution...I would only add that you can save a
little by ordering PhoneNet compatible connectors @ $8 per with LED
indicating traffic, but NOT the termination switch (nice feature), check
the back pages of MacUser or MacWorld. You MUST terminate the ends or
suffer very interesting problems (connection losses, etc.).

Have a look at the FirstClass (FC) software from SoftArc. (I'm not concerned
with SoftArc in any way.) It's the very best I know of
for doing a *Macintosh-like* BBS or mailing system.
The FC client software for use by your BBS readers is freeware indeed,
but the FC server is perhaps not as cheap as you wished for.
Nevertheless, the client is available at info-mac
(info-mac/comm/bbs/first-class-client-27.hqx) and you should try out
some FC mailboxes in your reach by all means to see it's ease of use.

Happy Macing, Oliver.

"I started to use RD several years ago (before it turned "Deluxe")

[email protected] (Jon Hueras):
"I've been using Redux Deluxe to back up to 128-meg MO disks for years without

"As far as Inline is concerned, they got swallowed up by Focus Enhancements a

"Duane W. Small" "
"I use Redux Deluxe to back up to ZIP regularly. For my purposes, the

up in Finder format, and is also limited to one cartridge for each

The only equation editor that supports EGO is Expressionist by Waterloo Maple
Software. Expressionist hasn't been updated in sometime (since it was owned by
Prescience Co.). It is a fine equation editor.

I have used MathType by Design Science (a crippled version comes with
Microsoft Word), Expressionist, and the equation editor that is part of
Framemaker.

All the equation editors have their pros and cons. MathType is the easiest to
use but produces suboptimal images on Quickdraw printers. Expressionist is the
most flexible and gives the best output on quickdraw printers but hasn't been
updated in years. Frame's equation editor is the most math-like but only works
within the Framemaker environment.

I think that this is because when you saved the .mov files you saved them

saving the files without dependencies, they should be close in size to the
original .avi and open with your QT player in the absence of the .avi file.

Question:

I am generating encapsulated postscript files from Showcase, an illustration
program, on an SGI machine. How do I get Mac applications to display it with a
preview image? I can create the .eps file with an embedded preview image, and
I can transfer it into the Mac, and some programs allow me to load it
(Photoshop and Illustrator fail with a "Can't parse postscript" error, but Word
suceeds), but even Word doesn't display it with a preview image.
This makes it hard to size and place my picture.

Apparently, the preview image needs to be in the resource fork of the file? I
have dozens of files to do this on. Isn't there a handy little utility that
will take a .eps file with a preview image, and use the preview image to create
a Mac file with the preview image appropriately present in the resource fork?

I downloaded the MacBench 3 program from the MacUser internet site and

their standard (which was a PowerMac 6100/60). This surprises me because
a Performa 6115CD is a PowerMac 6100/60 with extra software.

My results on integer performance were about 88% of standard, floating
point was about 97% of standard. On the various disk and graphics tests
results wandered from lows of 75% to highs of 400%. This varied a lot
depending on what extensions, etc. that I have installed (speed doubler
and ram doubler for example). The 88% and 97% were constants though
on the CPU performance.

Does anyone else have comments?

Client Services/Learning Resuources

Hello folks.

I have a situation where I would like to gather some information and advice.
I have recently joined an organization which is a predominately
Windows/Novell/Token ring environment. There is a small
Macintosh LAN on 10BaseT attached to an SE/30 server. The Macs on this
LAN access the (IBM) Novell server through a EtherSnap board in the
server. The only use they can use this server at present is to place files
on it so that the DOS/Windows people in their department can access
these files.

The Mac workstations are quite cut off from any other access on campus.

The DOS/windows workstations attached to the same server have access
to PROFS, the email system here on campus. These workstations can
also access the Internet through Netscape, because they are attached to our
fibre optic backbone.

My questions: What do I need to add to this configuration in order to :

1. Give the Mac users access to the (IBM) email system, PROFS. I assume
I need a 3270 client running on the Macs. Is there more to it than this?
2. Allow the Mac users to get out to the Internet using Netscape in order to d
their research. I will need Mac TCP on the Macs; can anyone guide me through
the other pieces? ie More hardware, and so on.
I have been out of the Mac environment for a while (sigh) so I am
not current on connectivity issues and so on.

Please reply to my Internet address as I am not able to read InfoMac .
regularly. I am most appreciative of any help you savants can give me!

a solution to those terrible type 11 errors experienced with

I use Open Transport 1.0.8 on a 7500. My Internet connection is
over a modem to a PPP account using dynamic addressing. I have not
replaced OT's Internet libraries and TCP/IP with MacTCP. I do not
experience any type 11 errors with it, in fact it is more stable
than when I used MacTCP. During the months I've used this setup I
have slowly added a lot of extraneous extensions, including Aaron
and other "unnecessary" which PCI Mac owners are often warned
against.

So I suggest that Don't Panic!'s advice is not a solution. The
cause of these type 11 errors is probably not with Open Transport
but from the article it's not possible for me to say what it is.
Perhaps the MacPPP 2.0.1 or MacPPP 2.2.0a that he (?) mentions. I
would suggest using FreePPP 1.0.4.

I've seen the Apple AV card advertised at $495, but I don't know what it

Most faculty at our Univ. have a Mac on their desk and they came with MS

is a way to have both Word 6 and Word 5.1 on the hard disk but have Word
5.1 be the one that launches, if we double-click on a Word document (no
matter which version it was created in. And, yes, we do have the goodie
that allows 5.1 to read Word 6 files). What I have done on my own machine
is to compress Word 6, but that was fairly time-consuming and it takes Word
6 totally out of commission. Is there some quicker, easier way to ensure
that double-click on a Word 5.1 or 6 file will launch only Word 5.1?
Thanks.

Those are two very typical problems; I have seen them both on my 6100
with RAM Doubler 1.5.2 (I tried 1.6.1 but didn't inhale--it causes
freezes when trying to load Photoshop 3.0.5).

To solve the FreePPP problem, add a space in front of "MacTCP" in the
control panel's filename (this is in the FreePPP docs, BTW).

The Word 5.1a problem is more sporadic, and seems to happen if there's
not enough slack in the System heap. Sometimes, opening the Trash folder
and reclosing it will work, but my usual solution is to open and close
Netscape 2.0b6--that's practically guaranteed to bloat the System heap
enough to let Word load.

If the 5300 has other symptoms claiming to be "low memory," I can't help
you. But the ones you mentioned are well-documented.

this utility made it look especially quick and easy. At the show, the

I have my small personal site on my Duo. I make the any changes offline

in Netscape offline.

When I am satisfied with how everything looks I upload automatically
all changes (and just the changes) with one keystroke.

An URL which allows you to see a large number of Claybasket sites
(including some large and sophisticated ones, 37 sites total when I
just checked) --

The software is at --

This is a large download (~2.3 Mb), containing Frontier, Claybasket,
MacBird and a few odds and ends.

Subject: System 7.5.1 Text Translators; Where are they stored?

When opening a downloaded text file, a Translator screen containing a
number of text Editors opens (e.g. SimpleText, HTML, BBEdit,
StuffitExpander, E-World, MPack, Sparkle, TextEdit, and a half dozen
others).
I highlight and click on one or the other, and normally, my file opens.
My question is:
Where on my HD are these translators stored, and how do I access
the Translation file to add or delete Editors?
Please respond to [email protected] and I will post a reply summary.

Thanks in advance,
Les Becker

You cannot do this with System 7, which allocates memory dynamically (if
none-too-intelligently). Look elsewhere for the cause of your crashes.

It's called Mac OS Purge, it's somewhere in Info-Mac, and it doesn't work
very well. Most of the time, I ended up with a *larger* heap after using
it. Hey, on second thought...maybe that would solve your first problem?

Subject: TEACHING AID: Searching for a spelling teacher font

I have been asked to pass on the following request from a friend whose
school currently lacks access to the net.

This teacher works with young people who are just learning to write and
spell. What she would like to have is a font that has the normal 26
English-language letters in upper and lower case, as well as some special
characters. The normal ones like period, comma, and dash are easily
explainable.

However, this font should also have some special characters that are either
square or rectangular. These rectangles can have the long axis
horizontally as well as vertically. Further, when in the vertical, these
rectangles can be from the writing line up, or can extend below the line.

The idea is that the children write the missing letters into the boxes and
rectangles. Round letters like "a" and "o" can go into a square. "m" goes
in a horizontal rectangle. "h" goes into a rectangle starting on the
writing line while "g" and "y" go in rectangles that extend below the line.

The class has been using the underscore as a space filler to show that the
student needs to put in the missing letter. However, if a font that uses
rectangles to show the orientation and size of the letter could be found,
this would be a help.

Because of the number of disabled and vision-impared students in the class,
the added help can be important for some students.

Thanks in advance for any ideas where to find (or buy) such a font, please
reply directly to: [email protected]

The "MouseMan" from Logitech is a 3-button mouse. Nice "look and feel",
but I don't know whether it works with MacX.

Best wishes, Christian.

Subject: Upgrading a Performa 550

My girlfriend owns a Performa 550. I use it very infrequently, but when I
have to use, it runs very slow. I need some information on making it faster.

I read somewhere about Math-Co-Processors, will one help me? I also read
that I could do a motherboard swap up to a Performa 575 (The 575 runs a 68040
chip, while the 550 runs a 68030 chip). I also read that if I get the
upgrade to a 575, I can go power PC later if I wish.
If anyone has done this upgrade, or knows anyone that has, please e-mail
me. Also, if anyone knows where I can get the parts, please e-mail me as
well.
I would prefer e-mail responses, but please send a reply to the list as
well. I am sure that there are others somewhere that want to do this as
well. I will post to the list when I am done with the upgrade to tell if it
has gone well
Thank you

Subject: WARNING: Fonts Manager

Friends:

I just had the misfortune of downloading and trying out Fonts Manager, a
shareware package recently uploaded to this archive. I don't know how well
it actually works once installed, but be VERY careful in trying it.

Though I've happily used MasterJuggler for quite a while, I am always lured
by shareware, so I got a copy of FM to try out. The documentation included
with the package is scant, so it's impossible to know beforehand how FM
actually rearranges and refiles things upon installation, so that when my
PM7100/80 hung in the middle of installation and I had to reboot, I
discovered that my font suitcases seemed to have flown from my Fonts
folder, and that myriad little files, folders, aliases, etc had been
installed in many different places. My font suitcases ended up in a new
folder inside the Preferences folder (go figure!).

Of course, any package that promises only to replace and marginally improve
upon what I already have and crashes my machine upon installation heads
straight to the trash once my system recovers. Those that mess around with
my configuration without forewarning or documentation earn my deepest ire.

I am not commenting here on the quality of Fonts Manager itself; it may be
good for some people. I am warning I-M readers, however, to save a copy of
their System Folder file structure and content list (which we should all do
anyway) before taking a ride with it.

I'm chastened after an hour's worth of having to fix things.
