Subject: [*] 4th Artificial Life
Education:choas,evolution,neura
This package [58K] presents three programs that demonstrate some
interesting concepts: CHAOS in rules (Life), EVOLUTION (Animal Farm)
and LEARNING in neural networks (ChaseNet):
1) 'LIFE', the famous AUTOMATIC BOARD GAME, that calculates
new populations with 3 rules. Produces interesting 'swerms'.
2) 'ANIMAL FARM', a GENETIC cellular AUTOMATA algoritm, that demonstrates
concepts like evolution and even biosystems.
Witness evolving fauna eating too much flora and disturbing balance.
3) 'CHASENET', a small NEURAL NET that drives a very simplistic
'virtual robotcar'. It uses 'hill climbing' to improve chasing an
object.
The package is FreeWare (including on CD-ROM is OK). The apps. are written
in Pocket FORTH (by Chris Heilman) and this 18K small but very powerful
COMPILER is INCLUDED, together with a description of the language. (Pocket
Forth is already available at 'De velopment' but that's a 700K package!)

(c) 1991-1996 Greg Landweber and ISYS Development Corp.
>From the authors of Greg's Buttons, Greg's Browser, and DoubleScroll.
Why wait for eight? Your Mac can have the Copland user experience today!
Just drop Aaron into your Extensions folder, and your Mac will look just
like the Copland Default Theme will (Aaron is based on Apple's official
Copland interface specs). Aaron gives you 3D Copland-style windows, scroll
bars, buttons, folder icons, menus, fonts, pop-ups, progress boxes, Finder
window headers, and more. Aaron is a fat binary for Macs and PowerMacs.
Version 1.3 fixes a conflict with System 7.5.3 on the 5200-, 5300-, 6200-,
and 6300-series Performas. It also has many other improvements and fixes.

Subject: [*] AliasZoo 2.0.8 - alias management utility
AliasZoo is an alias management utility. The latest issue of Macworld
(April '96) included AliasZoo in their list of the top ten most
universally useful programs for the Macintosh, and awarded it 4 stars.
AliasZoo will locate all aliases on a volume, verify that they're
functioning properly, and identify those that are not. Any alias in
this list can then be renamed, re-connected to a new target, or thrown
in the trash. You can even ask AliasZoo to search all your volumes and
attempt to automatically re-connect damaged aliases for you.
AliasZoo supports PowerTalk aliases, Drag and Drop, AppleScript, and
requires System 7 or greater. This latest version adds support for the
AppleGuide help system, fixes a few bugs, and adds the ability to
register through Kagi Shareware (so you can now use your credit card).

Subject: [*] DNA for TechTool Pro
This file updates a component of the commercial program TechTool Pro.
This is version 1.0.1 of the TechTool Pro DNA file. The DNA file is kept
in the "TechTool Support Files" folder and contains the system database
that allows the tests in the FILE TESTS panel to operate. Version 1.0.1
adds support for system 7.5.3 (aka System 7.5 update 2.0). Simply drop
the new DNA file into your "TechTool Support Files" (replacing the old
DNA file) and your copy of TechTool Pro will be able to test the new
system version.
The 7.5.3 data in DNA 1.0.1 is based on the US release of system 7.5.3.
When Apple releases non-US versions of system 7.5.3, this database will
need to be updated to reflect the changes in the international version.

DropReception 2.0
Intelligent Application Launch Utility
Macintosh has very useful method for openning file called "Drag & Drop".
Since I like this method, I used "Drag & Drop" commonly to openning file.
So I put many aliases of applications on the desktop for using this method.
However my desktop is very crowded with many application's icons.
DropReception is best solution for this sort of case. By using the DropRecep
tion,
you can drop file into any application through the DropReception.
DropReception learns relationship of file type and applications.
So any Drag & Drop will be relaid to suitable application by the
DropReception.
Requires 68020 MPU or later.
This software is free.
It may be freely copied and distributed except commercial use.
Enjoy!

Subject: [*] eDOC 1.1.2: an autonomous-document software
eDOC(tm) is a shareware program which enables preparation of so-called
"autonomous" or "portable" documents from most Macintosh applications.
Such documents can be read and printed without the need for the source
application to be available, while maintaining their original content
and layout.
Standard eDOC documents are read using a free application (eDOC Reader)
which is included in the package. The Reader is small in size (about
50K) and has several viewing, searching and copying options.
Since version 1.1, eDOC provides the ability to create self-reading
documents (SRDs), which contain an embedded viewer application and
therefore do not require the separate Reader application. The embedded
viewer adds less than 40K to the document size.
Version 1.1.2 provides new printing options (it supports printing on
both sides of paper) and the ability to customize the About dialog in
SRDs.
eDOC is fast and requires very little memory or disk space. Typical uses
of eDOCs include:
- storing companyUs documentation on the server
- storing your personal documentation on your own computer
- preparing documentation for outside electronic distribution
eDOC may be used on a free trial basis for 30 days. If you find it
useful and continue to use it beyond the free trial period, you are
required to pay a $25 registration fee. Multi-machines licenses are
available.
The distribution file is a self-installing package which includes eDOC
Creator (a Chooser extension), eDOC Reader (an application) and full
documentation.

Subject: [*] FindText 1.3.1 (FAT)
FindText is a utility program that searches your files for specific text.
It can search your 1000 Mb harddisk for that one file you're looking for
containing a specific name, subject, date, word, .... You can select which
kind of files you want to search. Eg. search only in files of type TEXT or
only files created after 1-1-95 and not larger than 300 kb.
Instead of manually opening all your documents and looking for a specific
address let FindText do it for you (you probably will forget to open the
document you are looking for because it is in a folder where it doesn't
belong and you don't expect it to be there). It saves you a lot of time and
boring work. FindText can work in the background.
This is version 1.3.1 of FindText. It runs native both on the PowerMac and
on the 68020 / 68030 / 68040 Mac. It needs System 7 or better.
FindText does not run on a 68000 Mac (Plus, SE, Classic, PowerBook 100,

had come with the previous update has been corrected and a few cosmetic
changes have been made. Support is partial. The file has been checked
using Disinfectant 3.6.
This is what GPOWER does:
GPOWER performs high-precision statistical power analyses for the most
common statistical tests in behavioral research, that is, t-tests, F-tests,
and Chi^2-tests.
GPOWER computes
(a) power values for given sample sizes, effect sizes
and alpha levels (post hoc power analyses),
(b) sample sizes for given effect sizes, alpha levels,
and power values (a priori power analyses), and
(c) alpha and beta values for given sample sizes,
effect sizes and beta/alpha ratios (compromise power analyses).
The program may be used to display graphically the relation between any two
of the relevant variables and it offers the opportunity to compute the
effect size measures from basic parameters defining the alternative
hypothesis.

Subject: [*] Jade 1.02
Jade 1.02 is a multithreaded JPEG viewer for the Mac which is
relatively lean (388K as a fat binary, and a minimum memory
partition size of 600K) but is extremely fast and sports some
unique features:
Multithreading gives you constant access to all of Jade's features:
especially useful when used as a helper for a web browser or when
you just want to decompress two images at once.
Through the use of it's own virtual memory scheme, Jade can have
many (around 100+ files at the preferred parition setting) files
simultaneously _regardless of their size_ This is because decompressed
images only occupy a little RAM and the actual image is stored on
disk. This feature allows you to do batch viewing jobs which
are especially useful on slower machines: drop a ton of JPEGs on it
and get a cup of coffee. When you return, voila!
Jade can also display JPEG's at their full size or in a small (but
quick!) preview size in addition to the standard screen size. This
coupled with a delete file hot key allows users to sift and filter
through many images with ease.
Jade is also one of the first JPEG viewers to support Progressive
JPEGs which are becoming prominent in web sites.
new in 1.02:
--some small user interface changes
--full support of multiple monitor systems
--Automatic update of windows on screen depth changes
--minor improvements to slideshow
Jade is FAT. Requires 68020 (or higher) or PowerPC, Thread Manager or
system 7.5 (or later).
It's also FREE.

Subject: [*] LaserWriter Bridge 2.0.1 OT Patch
System 7.5.3 is out, and with it many are beginning to try out Open
Transport for the first time. Unfortunately, Apple's Laser Writer Bridge
doesn't work with Open Transport, so those of us who depend on using LW
Bridge to connect to a printer are out of luck. It's not that LW Bridge
_can't_ work with OT, it just doesn't recognize it's version of AppleTalk.
Enter LW Bridge OT Patch, written by Caleb Clauset ,
which will update LW Bridge so that it _can_ be used with Open Transport.
Apple will be releasing a new version of LW Bridge in the future, but in

This is the latest {Mar 15,1996} version this report and should replace
the previous version of mac-ftp-list.txt.
This is a update {Mar 15,1996} to Mike Gleason and Bruce Grubb's Mac FTP
list. It lists over 200 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes), over
60 Mac web pages, and contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs
decompress and decode which files. This archive contains both the text
and html versions.
Please note that the html part is actually four crosslinked files:
mac-ftp-list.html, ftp-list.html, www-section.html, and site-notes.html.
Must be in a monospaced font to be readable; Courier 10pt is recommended,
though Monaco 9pt or a PC equivalent can be used instead. Needs StuffIt

Subject: [*] NightSky 2.21
Welcome to NightSky, a planetarium for Macintosh by Kaweah Software.
Through its windows you can see where the stars are tonight,
next month, or any other time. You can view up to over 50,000
stars (if you acquire a big enough data file). You can see where
the sun, moon, planets, galaxies and other deep space objects
are. You can view all the constellations. You can add, edit, and
remove stars and constellations if you wish.
NightSky 2.2 updates its sky displays every 90 seconds (on a
6100/60) to keep up with the sky outside. If you want to
control which part of the sky is displayed, you can move to
another part of the sky with several methods, including a
mouse-driven zoom facility.
Four different map projections are used by NightSky.
Do you want to see what the sky looks like from another star?
Just activate the "View from Star" feature and click on a star.
You can have up to five windows open at a time, each with its
own view.
If you see too many or too few stars, you can use the "Bright"
menu to change that.
Turn on the "twilight" feature if you want to see where day and
night are. There is also a "magnitude density" feature if you
want an alternative way of seeing star light (your Mac must
have color to use these special display modes). There is also an
"Auto Const's" mode in which NightSky attempts to draw its
own pseudo-random constellations.
NightSky 2.21 is a "fat" application, which means that it will run
on most 680x0-based macintoshes (an FPU or Software FPU is
necessary), and is also accelerated for Power Macintosh.

Skittles is an action/puzzle game for one or two players! You control
genetically altered Skittles which fall from the sky, trying to keep them
>From stacking up to the top of the screen.
The Skittles engineers have recently been experimenting with new
flavors and colors. One of the more psychopathic scientists decided to
alter the Skittles' formulas through genetic mutation. The first test batch
was produced, and a teeming, jiggly mass of coagulated, living Skittles
appeared. They quickly began to multiply and pile up into large groups. As
the scientists fled screaming from the building, a few clever minds noticed
that the Skittles were highly reactive. When four of the same type of
Skittle touched, they would instantly vaporize.
There's only one hope left for the Skittles plant, its workers, and
the small city that they inhabit. Vaporize the Skittles before they run
rampant and destroy everything in their path! You are the only hope left
before they crush the entire city.

Subject: [*] SliceWatch 1.0.4
SliceWatch is a database application designed to allow you to manage,
manipulate, and report on (time) data captured in any Macintosh time
recording application.
SliceWatch was initially designed to allow you to store and manipulate
(text) data files exported from Maui Software's TimeSlice and
TimeTracker time recording applications. These two apps allow you to
record time spent in your daily activities.
SliceWatch is the back-end database that allows you to view,
manipulate, print and summarise your time records so that you can see
where you're spending your time.
SliceWatch can also be used with any application that allows you to
record segments of your time in a similar manner to TimeSlice or
TimeTracker-as long as you can export the data from your time
recording program, you should be able to use SliceWatch.
SliceWatch is not designed as replacement or alternative to your time
recording applications, rather it's designed to be used in conjunction
with those applications to allow you to see how much time you're
spending doing various activities. Some of the advantages of using
SliceWatch include:
* store one or more users time records in a single database, allowing
you to print reports for all people in your company, or for a single
person,
* graph the time you have spent doing various activities over several
time frames (e.g. weekly, monthly etc)
* perform complex searches so that you can print a report. For
example, search for all time records for Client X, created between,
June 1 1995 and Oct1 1995, which have either the category 'A', or 'B',
and are for Project 'Y' only.
* create your own ad hoc report styles. That is, if the built in
reports don't provide the data you require, you can define your own
report styles (which can be saved for future use).
* see how much time has been spent on a project, or for a category, or
for a client.

Subject: [*] Splitter 4.0.1
Splitter 4.0.1, as the name suggests, is a program that splits text files.
Resource forks are completely ignored, so it is best not to use Splitter
on files with resource forks. Just text, please!
You can choose to segment the file into chunks of any size you desire or
you can fill disks with segments.
Splitter requires MacOS 7.0 or higher and is Apple Event friendly.
Splitter contains no PowerPC code, but works just fine on Power Macs.
(MacNerdNote: Splitter is nearly all File Manager calls, which are
still not PPC native, so Splitter gains no benefit by going native -
I timed it myself. Maybe Splitter will go native when Copland shows up.)
4.0.1 contains various bug fixes, including a major one that makes
Splitter actually useful, as opposed to placing random junk into output
files.

Subject: [*] Unicorn Editor 1.0.2
Welcome to Unicorn Editor, my styled text editor capable of editing
Chinese, Japanese nd Korean based on the WASTE text engine. It is a
small, easy to use program which fill the gap between SimpleText and a
full featured word processor. For oriental people, it fills a void for a
stand alone styled text editor for double byte language with built-in
font and input method support. Unicorn Editor v1.0 is a ShareWare ($10).
If you like the program, please support shareware concept by paying the
registration fee.
This WorldScript compatible style text editor for both 68K and PPC
Macintosh is back engineered based on the features of the popular
Tex-Edit Plus. Because both Tex-Edit Plus and Unicorn Editor use WASTE
text engine, one should find that the two programs share a lot of
similarities in the text editing features. While this program is not
exactly the Tex-Edit Plus yet, especially in sound and picture handling,
the text handling is further enhanced with various oriental language code
set translation, input method support and custom bitmap fonts support.
The program was writen in C and compiled with CodeWarrior 8.
With Unicorn Editor you can
* Create, edit and print styled multilingual text in Chinese, Japanese,
Korean and of course, any Roman languages, such as English.
* Convert language code set by importing and exporting text file to be
loaded to internet.
* Set up an external Chinese, Korean, Japanese viewer and editor for
internet browser.
* Quickly create, edit and print styled text documents of any size
(limited by RAM).
* View and print TeachText or SimpleText read-only ("ReadMe") documents.
* Embed picture and sound in your file for breath-taking presentation.
* Drag and Drop any text, picture, sound object around or to other drag
and drop compatible application.

Subject: [*] YA NW TEXT to Filter 1.0
TEXT to Filter is a utility application for YA-NewsWatcher 2.1.x and 2.2.x.
It converts text files (previously created using the companion application
Filter to TEXT, and presumably edited using a text editor) into filter
files used by YA-NewsWatcher.

Subject: [*] Yet Another NewsWatcher 2.2.0b6
Yet Another NewsWatcher is a Usenet newsreader application for Macintosh
featuring binary and anonymous remailer posting, article filtering (kill
files), and article sorting.
Version 2.2.0b6 replaces 2.2.0b4 and 2.1.8. Improvements include synching
with original NewsWatcher 2.1.2, bug fixes for searching headers and
editing filters, and a few minor feature enhancements.
Yet Another NewsWatcher is free. It may not be sold for profit or included
with software or other products which are sold for profit without the
permission of Northwestern University. Otherwise it may be freely
distributed.
Yet Another NewsWatcher was developed by Brian Clark based on the original
NewsWatcher application by John Norstad. It requires a Macintosh running
System 7.0 or later with 2.5 megabytes or more of memory and a hard drive.
The Mac must be connected to the Internet, and MacTCP or Open Transport
must be properly installed and configured. Unlike the original NewsWatcher,
YA-NewsWatcher will NOT run on machines without Color QuickDraw (which
includes all 68000 Macs).
YA-NewsWatcher is distributed as a "fat binary." This means that it runs in
native 68K mode on Motorola 68K Macintoshes, and it runs in native PowerPC
mode on Power Macintoshes.
For dialup use, YA-NewsWatcher works with the various SLIP and PPP
programs, and with ARA together with an appropriately configured
AppleTalk/IP gateway. It is strictly an online newsreader, and it does not
support any other kind of dialup connection. The program requires an active
full TCP/IP connection to the Internet. It does not support offline
newsreading, and it does not support older kinds of dialup connections
designed primarily for simple terminal emulation.
