Subject: [!] Microsoft to buy Apple!?

[Ouch. What will the anti-trust folks have to say about this? -Gordon]

CUPERTINO, California--April 1, 1996 -- As part of Apple's ongoing commitment
to its business users and their requirements for cross platform compatibility
Apple Computer, Inc. today announced that Microsoft, Inc. will purchase Apple
Computer, Inc. pending approval.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to help the MacOS achieve further market
penetration," Gil Ameilio, the new CEO of Apple Computer, said. "No longer
will corporate IS managers have to ask `Apple or Microsoft?` Apple brings a lot
to this merger -- superior human interface, Quicktime, Quickdraw 3D, Quicktime
VR, and, of course, OpenDoc."

Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft, described some of the more technical
aspects of the buy out: "Look, Apple has clearly done it right on several
fronts, and Microsoft on others. The object of this merger is to try to take
the best of the two operating systems and combine them. QuickTime, for
example, will become the default movie and music architecture on the all
future Windows operating systems. It will be developed to fully support
the Windows platform. Windows packages like DirectDraw and DirectSound will
be ported to the MacOS making it much simpler for game developers to develop
for both platforms. We are also considering making the Visual C++ mac cross
platform development tool a standard part of the mac system. This would make
it possible for programs to write with the Windows API on a Mac system."

Amelio continued with the long range plans for the merged company, "Eventually,
perhaps 10 years from now, we envision the two operating systems coming from
a common code base. Using the technology of Apple's Appearance Manager the
user will be able to select a Windows or MacOS look for their computer."

Other technologies that will be ported to Windows include QuickDraw 3D and
QuickDraw GX. QD3D will replace OpenGL on Windows systems. On the Apple
platform QDGX has not had good market penetration due to its large size and
heavy demand on system resources. However, Gates noted "Windows users are
used to large system components and programs like Word; fortunately both memory
and CPUs are dropping in price."

Peter Lewis, the ever-practical award-wining shareware author for the Mac, was
enthusiastic: "Anything that lets me write programs for use by more people is
fine by me." He went on to comment that, secretly, he has always admired the
Windows platform and looks forward to working with it. Adam Engst, author of
several Internet books and publisher of TidBits, an electronic Macintosh
newsletter, noted that "this merger will put to rest, forever, the questions of
Apple's viability. No one is worried about Microsoft going away." Guy
Kawasaki, Apple fellow and moderator of the famous EvangeList mailing list was
quite excited about the plan: "I did give him my book, How to Drive Your
Competition Crazy."

Microsoft is very aware of Apple users' needs and their devotion to the Apple
platform. Gates compared the phenomena to beer lovers who refuse to drink the
common beers and insist on the more expensive, but better tasting Microbrews.
To assure Apple customers, Microsoft is planning a large PR campaign. Over $20
million dollars is to be spent on advertising. The theme song will be "We are
the Champions" as performed by Queen, the rights for which were purchased for
more than 13 million dollars.

Apple's home page on the World Wide Web can be currently found at:
http://www.apple.com/, however, it will soon move to a link from
http://www.microsoft.com/.

am hoping Apple does not mind this distribution. I also hope these can be

ART Music is a translator that converts Finale EPS files to Illustrator
format, so you can edit a page of music just like a graphic (add color,
other graphics, move notes, etc.). ART Music is FAT; it runs on 680x0
computers and runs native on Power Macintoshes. Version 3.5.2 maintains
compatibility with Finale 3.5.x, and fixes a couple of minor bugs in
previous ART Music 3.5.x releases.

Subject: [*] Count WWWebula 1.2.3 CGI

Count WWWebula is a Macintosh CGI for use with WebStar, NetPresenz, or

MacHTTP 2.2. (i.e. a Macintosh WWW Server). (READ: THIS CGI IS *NOT* FOR

UNIX MACHINES, NOR WILL IT RUN ON ANY UNIX INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS'

WEB SERVERS)

Count WWWebula is a graphical access counter. It will display the number

of "hits" your web page has received in the form of a gif image.

Count WWWebula is shareware. Commercial (and Government) entities need

to send me $25 dollars c/o Kagi Software per server running the counter,

if you are planning on using it (Please read the enclosed license

agreement for complete details). You can do this via the included

"Register" application. Individuals, educational institutions, and

non-profit organizations need not send in the registration fee, but if

you choose to you will get added technical support. (otherwise only

limited trouble-shooting will be available to you).

*** 1.2.3 Changes

Threading will no longer ever be a problem. Use of the Thread Manager

has been removed. It didn't make it any faster anyway. In fact it made

it quite a bit slower. I've found that one should only employ threading

in a CGI if, and only if, the whole CGI process takes more than 5

seconds or so. Count WWWebula was around 1-2 seconds. It was just way

too much hassle for too little good (none).

A few memory problems have been removed. One problem involved writing a

short string to some random place in memory, though you've probably

never experienced a bug caused by this.

Added limited balloon help to the File Menu's items. (Only limited,

since the Apple Guide answers most questions.)

You can no longer manually check SIVC information via the "Current

Version Info..." menu item if you don't already have an open TCP

connection. This stops crashing on machines running MacTCP or MacPPP

whenever you aren't connected to your Internet Service Provider.

Fixed a problem with spurious crashes on 68K Macs.

Please note all the changes in 1.2.2.

Included in this icon package:

- A ResEdit resource containing ics#, ics4, ics8, ICN#, icl4, and icl8
resources of all the Mac "form factors" that have ever been released, with
the exception of the original Lisa (Mac XL) and the entire line of
PowerBooks. Sorry!
- A folder containing the exact same icons as the resource file, ready for
immediate copy-and-paste.
- A Simpletext Read Me file.
***

* What really distinguishes this icon package (along with the 2D
package=DD, which should be available at the same place you found this) from
the other icon archives is that virtually every single variation of Mac
form factors has been included. Remember the original LC? It was slated
to have 2 internal disk drives, but at the last minute Apple decided to put
a hard drive in instead, so a case cover was used to cover up the drive
slot. If you look closely, at the "LC (original)" icon, you'll be able to
make it out. Very minor variations in Mac cases, such as the "lip" found
in all manual-inject disk drive-equipped Macs or a slight remold of the
disk drive and CD areas (for example, some of the II-series, the Centris
610 series and the Quadra series) are included. For instance, the Quadra
800 icon set has eight variations, which include the 4 different optional
drive (CD and DAT) locations. Whatever desktop Macintosh you have, in
whatever configuration, you should be able to find a matching icon.
Additionally, all of these icons look great no matter what depth monitor
you have, although black and white _and_ in "View By" _anything_ except
"Icon" is pushing the limits somewhat.

* For those of you who have a 520-series Mac (ie the Mac TV, LC 520, 575,
580 and Performa equivalents) and can't find a 3D icon of your Mac
anywhere else, try this one! I spent a few hours getting it right.

Subject: [*] Star Battle ][ ~ The Audio Sci-Fi War Continues

Clixsounds, creator of unique Macintosh sound files, has released the
second episode of its original stereo "Star Battle" Science Fiction
series of sounds!

The "Star Battle" series brings you incredible sound quality full of
vivid audio imagery and is an on-going epic tale of the Alpha-1
squadron's mid-space battle against intruding beings from another planet.

The epic began in Star Battle as Eagle-1, a member of the Alpha-1
squadron, was being pursued by an alien assailant. After attempts at
calling to Red Leader, the squadron captain, Eagle-1 is wounded by a
brutal missile from the alien ship. We are left not knowing the fate of
Eagle-1, as the massive explosion of his ship fades to silence, ending
episode 1.

The new, Star Battle ][, is an intense, 30-second sound that brings to
light the perspective of Red Leader as he is commanding the Alpha-1 team
to fall into formation, not knowing of the fact that Eagle-1 was being
persued by an intruder. He hears the distorted distress call of Eagle-1
and instantly takes action...but is it in time to save Eagle-1?!

Find out in this excellent, original production from Clixsounds. Both
episode are freeware sound filesare available at the Clixsounds WWW site
at:

http://www.edmondsun.com/clix/

The second episode will be available in both 16-bit/44kHz and 8-bit/22kHz
versions. Please note that the 16-bit version will only be available
until April 15.

Subject: 7.5.3 & MSWord6.01 & SAM

After seeing a number of posts for help, and sending some Email
responses, I guess it's time for a post here.

Word 6.0.1: Despite loading the recommended patches, my 6100/66
froze whenever I opened/closed a file. The solution I found was to
disable Apple Menu Options in the Control Panels. Annoying, but I
had so much work to do that I did have time to be more elegant.

SAM: You have to go to the Symantek site and download both SAM 4.0.8
and a new virus definition file. Please note that you can't download
these using Netscape, because Symantek stores them as .bin files. I
had to use Fetch to get them. Now SAM works fine.

Both fixes were mentioned in the WWW MacInTouch pages. I recommend
going there and reading all the 7.5.3 advice available there.

Gert-Jan,

The first physical partition on our (external) boot drive contains System
6.0.8, but most of the time we boot from the second one, containing System
7.5.3.

Since these were created using Silverlining (5.6.3), we simply use a La
Cie-supplied Apple Menu Item called "Silver Volumes," which has a check
box for setting whether or not the volume is to be mounted at start-up.
We keep this *un-checked* for the first partition.

If, after the computer has booted System 7.5.3, we need access to the
first partition, a quick click on Silver Volumes' "Mount" button will pop
this "drive" onto the desktop - but unless we also check the Startup box,
it will then stay out of sight to the OS at the next start-up.
(Silverlining also allows one to password-protect such disk mounts, if
desired.)

Subject: [A] System 7.5.3 Crashes

After following the System 7.5.3 postings in the last ten or so Info-Mac
Digests, I offer the following comments:

The 2.0 Update so far is stable on:

1. IIci (12mb RAM, plus RAM Doubler)
2. Quadra 610 with DOS card
3. Several PM 6100/60's (8mb and 16mb RAM, plus RAM doubler)
4. PowerBook 5300e (16mb RAM, plus RAM Doubler)
5. LC 575 (4mb RAM, plus RAM doubler)

It also is stable on a lab full of 5200/75 LC's and 5300/100 LC's,
*except* that there are seemingly random machine-to-machine crashes at the
time Adobe Type Manager 3.9 loads. Removing this Control Panel always
clears up the problem. (I have reported this to both Adobe and Apple, but
have not yet heard back from either of them.)

The PB 5300e has the "Universal System Folder" on its hard drive, and when
it is set to PB SCSI disk mode, the IIci boots from it just fine. Best of
all, the Finder, using the IIci's internal video with an Apple Portrait
Display, has now sped up to the point that it *almost* equals System 6.0.8
- which is to say, nearly double!

Clearly, on this particular 68030 machine at least, System 7.5.3 is a
major improvement.

We do have one *huge* problem, however: Another stock PM 6100/60 (16mb
RAM, initially with RAM Doubler) is totally unstable. After removing just
about every Extension and Control Panel - in addition to starting with the
Shift key held down - the computer still crashes with increasing
frequency. (This machine *does* have some NetWare, QuickMail and ARA
support that the above 6100's do not have.)

Norton Disk Doctor 3.2.1 was run prior to installing the Update, with no
problems reported. Now, however, there is a Volume Bitmap problem that
Norton purports to fix, but which always reappears on every subsequent run
of the program. So, the behavior at this point *may* be due to disk
corruption - caused by System 7.5.3? - or something else entirely? Who
knows?

(Our next step will be to boot the errant 6100 from our new "magic
bullet," the now-Universal PB 5300, and see if the behavior persists.
This feature alone may turn out to be worth the price of the upgrade.)

Display, but while the latter is razor-sharp when connected to the
internal video of a IIci, characters on it have a sort of "ghosting" or
fuzziness when it's driven by the PB.

With the PB's internal video, is this just the "nature of the beast"?

Ummm... I don't think this debate is of much merit. All Greg Landweber did
was announce a new release of the 'Aaron' extension, which gives your Mac a
different look. After reading the digest for five years, I've seen a lot
of stuff entered into the archive. Some of the enhancements are
functional, many are purely cosmetic. You have the right to download or
not to download any of the archive's offerings, so feel free not to. As
for changing the look of the Mac environment, I've downloaded no fewer than
ten-- Aurora, Aaron, Church Windows, and even WDEF III, an old control
panel to give you NeXT-style windows, just to see what they do. It's easy
to see that these kind of enchancements are quite popular and they don't
exact much of a performance hit. I'm just glad to see that it's possible
to _personalize_ the "personal computer" this easily.

If memory serves correctly, it is Delete, Option, Command, Shift. I
remember by the acronym DOCS.

Jon, did you bring the Banksia across from your PC? If you did, then your
modem initialization string may be the real problem here.

In the factory settings (given by &f or &f1) for a PC, it's usual to have
the Data Terminal Ready (DTR) setting at &d2, which means a DTR drop causes
the modem to hang up.

But the Mac, with its neat little 8-pin mini-DIN serial port hasn't enough
pins nowadays, and thus we're forced to use a more limited set of hardware
handshaking based on Clear to Send/Request to Send. Pin 1 of the mini-DIN
connector, hardware handshaking out from the computer, is in fact either
RTS or DTR, though most Mac software uses RTS; and thus Mac modems have &d0
in their &f factory settings--&d0 ("0" = zero) means DTR drop is ignored
(assumed ON) by the modem and it takes no action.

As an example of this, the USR Sportster for the Mac used to come with &d2
preselected by a DIP switch, and many users with Macs initially couldn't
use their modem at all, just no connects, even with the simplest terminal
software.

Sorry for the technicalities here, if it's all incomprehensible don't
worry. Just use an initialization string like AT&FD0W2; and have a glance
at the Banksia manual to check that your factory settings _are_ given by
&f--they are in the Banksia manual I've seen--and not &f1. If your modem
did come from your PC, you'll be able to see under the &d listing that the
default is &d2, and that will confirm the problem...

Uh, if you didn't bring the modem across from your PC, then the problem may
just be RAMDoubler... and you might just be stuck with it till Connectix
squashes the bug...

Subject: replace 7.5.2 CD

I recently purchased a used PPC 7200/90. It came to me without the
system CD or manual and I would like to purchase these items from
Apple. But I have had no luck with the fellows at SOS-APPLE or Claris.
Does anyone out there know how I might get these two items. I have a
registered copy of 7.5 and would really like to just send it back to
them and "upgrade" to 7.5.2.

NOTE: Yes, I have ordered 7.5.3 CD but I need the original CD too.

Subject: Unavailable 6300 Modem Port

My new 6300 came with an internal modem card installed. The modem port
is covered, and the User's Guide says, "Don't connect anything to the
modem port if you have an internal modem."

The problem is that I need BOTH modem and printer serial ports to run my
MIDI equipment.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can do this?

With an external modem I simply use an A/B switch to choose between
modem-use of the modem port and MIDI-use of the modem port.

Is there any way I can do something similar with an internal modem?

If I need to remove the internal modem card, is there anything else I have
to do as well?

Please respond directly to me as well as to the digest.

Thanks.
