Subject: [*] Chiral 1.0.3 Update
Ambrosia Software, Inc. has just released a Chiral 1.0.3 Updater. This
updater only works if you already have an earlier version of Chiral.
If you do not already have Chiral, you need to download the complete
Chiral 1.0.3 package.
This updater brings Chiral up to Chiral 1.0.3, the latest version
which contains a number of bug fixes and adds a few features. All of
the files in the Chiral 1.0.3 Update should be extracted into your
existing Chiral folder to properly upgrade Chiral to version 1.0.3.
The following is a list of the bugs that were fixed in Chiral 1.0.3:
-- Included a revised version of the 8 channel Sound_Tool that works
better on lower-end Macs
-- Fixed a bug that caused the menu bar to stay hidden upon quitting
Chiral 1.0.2
-- Removed eWorld (*sniff*) from the FAQs and Registration
application
-- Updated the version and FAQ information

BBEdit Extension by Niel M. Bornstein
Copyright (c) 1996 PLR Software, Inc.
HTML Form Parser is a BBEdit extension to parse the output of HTML forms.
You would get the output mailed to you, for example, and the extension
will parse all the nasty little ASCII codes for non-alpha characters into
characters.
There are three modes of operation:
* If there is no window open, it will parse the contents of the
clipboard
* If there is a window open with no selection, it will parse the
entire contents of the frontmost window.
* If the frontmost window has a selection, it will parse the
selection
In any case, it will put the results of the operation in a new, untitled
window.
I use it in combination with Eudora. If I get just one message, I copy it
>From Eudora and run the Parser on it. If there are several, I save them
to one text file, then open it in BBEdit and run the Parser on the file.

Subject: [*] Stereo "Reaper Beep"
The "Reaper Beep" is a haunting new sound file that makes a great sample
to use as your system alert beep. It is a short, distinct sound that is
somewhat of an unearthly low-frequency 'buzz' that bounces from speaker
to speaker at the end. It sounds great on all systems, and moreso if you
have external speakers or headphones with a low-frequency response.
The Reaper Beep is available in both 16-bit/44kHz and 8-bit/22kHz
versions and can be downloaded here or at the Clixsounds WWW site at

Subject: [*] Tools Plus 3.0 Application Development Libraries
TOOLS PLUS 3.0 application development libraries let Macintosh developers
easily create a professional looking application using Symantec (THINK)
C/C++, THINK Pascal or CodeWarrior compilers. Virtually any GUI element is
created with a single line of code. Once created, elements work with each
other without the need for additional "support code," thereby letting
programmers eliminate thousands of lines of GUI and event related source.
Windows drag. Buttons click. Pop-up menus pop. The Edit menu edits. Scroll
bars scroll. One line creates it. One line makes it work!
Tools Plus supports and automates all standard user interface elements. It
also seamlessly integrates support for high-demand extras such as: floating
palettes, tool bar, the best picture buttons anywhere, MS-style tabs,
sliders, and much more. When you buy Tools Plus, you get everything you
need to create a complete "3D look" interface.
Get extraordinary results with ordinary C/C++ or Pascal. Create great
looking applications in less time, with dramatically less code and with far
fewer bugs. It's easy to learn and easy to use.
For all model Macs and PowerMacs running on System 6 or 7.x. Includes
comprehensive documentation and tutorials. No royalties. Tools Plus 2.6
was rated 4 stars by Macworld magazine (Feb 96).
SuperCDEFs (world-class controls for the discerning developer) can be seen
in action in this evaluation kit. The illustrated SuperCDEFs user manual is
included, and it shows off flat and 3D buttons, sliders, tabs and a
thermometer.

Yank is a shareware application that does two things:
1) Cleans up your Preferences folder by moving outdated files to the Trash.
2) Uninstalls an application and all files created by the application by
moving them to the Trash.
Nothing is deleted - all files are moved to the Trash.
Open the Trash folder and watch those unneeded files pile up!
Yank is a fat-binary application, which means it runs in native mode on a
Power Mac, and it works on 68K Macs as well. System 7 is required.
For more information, please see the files in the User's Manual folder.
New for 1.1:
* Choose between searching just the Startup volume, or all mounted volumes.
* Uninstall Control Panels as well as applications
* You can move files from the Trash back to where they came from with the
Finder's "Put Away" command:
1) Click on the files in the Trash that you want returned.
2) Select "Put Away" from the File menu (or type Command-Y).

>hi. we recently got several new powermac 7500s in our lab, and our lab

You are not using the same microphone are you?
The 'old' mic is delivering some 1 mV, while the audio mic input on the
7500 expects 100 mV.
I have this little opamp that does the trick of adapting levels (see
below). I am yet experimenting with the appropriate resistors, but I do get
a weak signal. When I apply higher gain, the quality drops enormous, so I
will look into two opamps in tandem. The 22k and the 1mu set makes a
virtual ground at half the power supply voltage. Could be 10K, but for
clarity of the scheme, I call them 22k.
Pin 8 is V+ of the opamp, pin 4 is the V0 of the opamp. d and q are dynamic
mics (the $1.00, 0.5 cm0 thingies, or use your 'old' mic). TL072 is a
commonly available dual opamp. Pretty noisy I think. To suppress hiss, use
a .1 mu condensor in parallel to the 1M resistor (experiment with this). To
increase the signal, you can increas 1M to 2M (again experiment).
Amplification is calculated as (1M/10K)x, while the 10K should remain. Boy,
pretty crowded drawing....
Cheers, Ard

Subject: 7.5.2 -> 7.5.3 Comments?
My experience with 7.5.*1* to 7.5.3 on a Quadra 605, 8MB RAM, APS external
1GB HD, 4 partitions
I realize that the question was directed towards converting from 7.5.2, but
68 k users probably never went to 7.5.2, and will be facing upgrading from
7.5.1 like me.
1) Did you encounter any problems with the actual installation? Did the
installer function properly without doing a clean install of 7.5.2 first?
Has anyone done the install on a PowerWave?
Yes, I had to do a clean install of 7.5, then installed the upgrade on that
but the cleaning out of junk in my system was helpful anyhow I think.
2) What definite practical advantages of 7.5.3 over 7.5.2 have you
noticed? Do you consider this update a major improvement?
Open Transport increases ftp download speeds by up to 75% over MacTCP.
3) What applications, extensions, CPs, etc don't work under 7.5.3 that did
work under 7.5.2? Have you found solutions?
Ram Doubler 1.6.1 works except that I cannot copy files from one drive to
another, or to a floppy without a freeze. I save up such tasks, switch off
RD, and do them all at one time, then activate RD again. Option dragging
does not work even with RD turned off. Both tasks mentioned cause the
system to freeze.
4) I'm annoyed that Open Transport is apparently "required" for PCI Macs
(gee, MacTCP is running just fine on my machine at the moment). If you
were using MacTCP under 7.5.2, what happened to it when you updated to
7.5.3? Can you switch networking with the NSS app, or not? Have you had
reason to try to switch back to MacTCP, and could you do it easily?
No comment, except that I'm very happy with OT 1.1
5) What communication applications *still* don't work under Open Transport
1.1? I've read one report that Eudora Lite doesn't work, but haven't seen
that confirmed.
None that I've used including Eudora Lite 1.5.4 have been a problem.
Actually, I have noticed that Mosaic 2.01 seems more unstable than it was
under TCP, but I only use it to check out my html work from an alternative
browser to Netscape, and apparently the 3.0A2 version of Mosaic is meant to
be more compatible with OT.
6) Just what advantages does Open Transport really offer? Someone claimed
that he was getting an incredible throughput of >8 KBps downloading a
binhexed file from the net via a 21600 modem connection (he didn't say if
the file was compressed, though). This would be several times faster than
the best I can get over a 288 modem with MacTCP! Is this kind of speed
reproducible?
As stated earlier, I have achieved up to 75% faster download speed with a
14,400 modem using Anarchie 1.60.

This isn't original with me, but it's the most often recommended advice:
Put the FfH in another folder. Elsewhere, create a new folder with the
*identical* name as the FfH (just highlight and copy its name). Now put
this new folder into that containing the FfH and choose to replace when
asked. This new folder should be trashable.
If this fails, try using HellFolderFix, available at fine archive mirrors
everywhere.

How about UUencoding (or BinHexing?) the file on the PC, which will give
you a big text file. Use a PC text editor to split it into disk-sized
pieces. Put each piece on a disk and sneaker over to the SE. Load the
files, then use a Mac text editor to carefully cut-and-paste the big file
back together again. Then use a Mac UUdecoder (or deBinHexer) to recreate
the original database file. Stuffit Expander with the engine does both, as
I recall.
If this is too tedious, maybe you could try a simple serial cable
connection between the Mac and PC, and use a standard comms program on each
computer to transfer the file. Progs that use the Zmodem protocol are best,
and ZTerm for the Mac is excellent. I have some info tucked away somewhere
on how to make the connecting cable, if you're interested.

I had this problem with my Duo210. I had to drop RAM Doubler which was/is
a pain as I only have 8meg real RAM. I, to this writing, have not been
able to get things to work with RD in the system. I have seen/heard other

I've been waiting to see whether anyone else has been experiencing this
problem.
In my case it occurs on a Powerbook 180. I too would be grateful for any
suggested remedy.

Subject: Printer woes
I need HELP!! I am using a DeskWriter 520 with my Performa 630 CD. It has
been working fine until today. When I tried to print a letter, I selected
CMD-P, the msg. "spooling" appeared, then nothing. The computer was stuck
with the watch cursor on the screen, but nothing happened. I finally went
to "Force Quit," clicked on that, and the screen cleared, BUT now the
cursor (arrow) was frozen. Only an emergency shut- down would get me out
of that.I looked at the Chooser and the printer was not selected. Why?? So
I selected it again, tried again with printing, and the same results.
Checked the Chooser and again the DW printer was not selected. I selected
it, closed the Chooser window, then promptly reopened it and the DW was NOT
selected. In deperation I reinstalled the DW software.Did not help. Give me
the fix for tis and I will grovel at your feet!

Subject: Removable Drives
Your help in solving an operating system quirk would be, as always, greatly
appreciated.
I have a a Syquest EZ135 external drive connected to my Centris 650. One of
its uses is for testing new software for compatibility. However, the
operating system performs one function which I would love to supress if it
is possible. i.e. Whenever you do a restart the O/S ejects the cartridge.
This I believe is quite normal but very annoying. Is there a method or
software to stop the operating system from ejecting removable cartridges
such as the EZ135 or optical removables.

Subject: Stylewriter Engine??
This may seem like a weird question, but somewhere I recall
reading/hearing that the Stylewriters have Canon engines (BJ-200 etc.)
and with the correct software driver(s) and cabling I might be able to run
my Stylewriter II as a BubbleJet on my DOS/Linux box through the serial
port.
Has anybody heard anything of the sort or is this idea just plain goofy?
Thanks,

Subject: Suitcase 3.0 - Speed Access - SoundMaster Conflicts
April 7, 1996
PPC 7100/66, nearly two years old, 16 MB RAM, RamDoubler 1.61, =
System 7.5.3.
Yesterday I installed Suitcase 3.0 on a stable system
As soon as I restarted, SoundMaster (1.8.2) told me I had a bad disk =
(that warning usually occurs when a bad floppy or DOS-configured =
floppy is installed). However, the system seemed to operate =
normally.
I used Conflict Catcher to isolate the warning, and it indicated =
Suitcase 3.0, Speed Access 1.1.2, and SoundMaster as the problems.
In further troubleshooting, I found that I can turn off EITHER =
Suitcase 3.0, OR Speed Access 1.1.2, and SoundMaster no longer tells =
me I have a bad disk. =
Of course, I can also turn off SoundMaster, but I don=B9t know if the =
warning it is giving me is accurate, and that the combination of =
Suitcase 3.0 and Speed Access 1.1.2 is causing, or will cause, =
problems.

Use FastFind or FileBuddy to make the folder visible, then empty the trash.

You might want to investigate upgrading to WP 3.5. It comes with MacLink
Plus and will do the conversions just fine!
