Subject: [*] PPPop 1.4.1

PPPop is a MacPPP 2.0.1 (or FreePPP) operator application. It puts up a
little button window which will open and close a PPP link -- without having
to run the Config PPP control panel. MacPPP must be installed for PPPop to
run. OT compatible. PPPop includes a session timer, a session log
function, a menu for selecting a server, and an application launcher which
can automatically run applications. It is AppleScriptable.

Changes from version 1.4:
Bug Fixes:
1. Launcher setup - some users were experiencing corruption of their
settings.
2. Launcher setup dialog - check box didn't work.
3. Second screen - PPPop tried to place windows back on the main screen.
4. "Auto Kill" - previously, PPPop would send a quit message to all apps
on the list, then close the link. Now it waits until they are all well and
truly dead before closing the link.
5. AppleScript dictionary - changed sound [on, off, clicks only] to
[all, off, clicks only] because of reserved word conflict.

Additions:
1. "Return to Finder" option re-instated.
2. "Disable Font Menu" option. People with lots of fonts complained of
long load time for this version of PPPop. Once you have set up the timer
font, you can disable font loading. This should speed up PPPop's launch.
3. Space bar is now a keyboard shortcut to toggle the timer display.

PPPop 1.4.1 works with FreePPP 2.5, but some changes will be needed (e.g.
to open the FreePPP setup application or control panel from within PPPop,
to select the right PPP Prefs file, et al.) These changes cannot be made
until FreePPP 2.5 is released.

Subject: [*] PrinterSwitch 1.0.2

PrinterSwitch is a control panel/system extension that allows you to
easily select among many different printers when you print documents in
your applications. It eliminates the need to use the Chooser to select a
printer.

PrinterSwitch appears right when you need it; when you select Print or
Page Setup from any program. No need to memorize hot key sequences! It
can also be activated by a convenient Control Strip Module.

PrinterSwitch complements Apple's new Desktop Printers because it allows
you to select different print devices even if your application won't let
you drag & drop documents onto a Desktop Printer.

It knows about LaserWriter 7 and 8 PPD files and makes sure to use the
proper PPD for each printer, eliminating a common source of Postscript
printing errors.

PrinterSwitch is shareware with a 14-day free trial period. Registration
is $14.00 for single user licenses; site and worldwide licenses are
available. Convenient registration via Kagi Shareware - pay with any
currency, credit cards, checks, etc. via mail, fax, or the internet.

Changes in Release 1.0.2

* Now supports up to 48 printer/driver combinations; previous versions
supported 16.
* Added support for the Adobe(R) PSPrinter driver. PrinterSwitch will
correctly save and restore PSPrinter PPD settings.
* In versions 1.0 and 1.0.1, a damaged PrinterSwitch Preferences file
would cause PrinterSwitch to freeze at startup. This has been fixed;
PrinterSwitch will now report an error message instead.

Release 1.0.2 is a recommended upgrade for all PrinterSwitch users.
Release 1.0.2 supercedes Release 1.0, 1.0.1, and all 1.0 beta versions.

Subject: [*] Quicken Updaters

Hi. I am uploading four files that are part of an upgrade package for
Quicken users. I have taken the liberty of breaking it into several
pieces which should make things a little easier than last time. Please
let me know if all of this makes sense. There is also a "Universal"
(FAT) updater, but I haven't bothered downloading it from AOL yet.
Takes too much time and I don't think anyone uses it. I suppose there
should be a comment about that in the description.

****IMPORTANT: This updater can ONLY be used with Quicken 6 Release R5****

A. QUICKEN 6 RELEASE R7 FIXES

When you run the Quicken 6 Updater, it checks your existing copy of
Quicken 6 for Macintosh (Release R5) and updates it to Quicken 6
Release R7. Release R7 includes fixes to a few specific,
customer-reported problems:

* Memos in split transactions in the Register are saved correctly,
and are not replaced by N/A.
* Save a Copy works correctly after deleting a security with no symbol.
* Partial page check printing settings are saved correctly.
* Online funds transfer recovers correctly after a service disconnect.
* Phone numbers are correctly transmitted to CheckFree.

B. IDENTIFYING THE RELEASE NUMBER OF YOUR COPY OF QUICKEN 6

1. Launch Quicken 6 and choose About Quicken from the Apple menu.

The About box opens, showing the Quicken logo and scrolling
credits.

2. At the About box, press the letter R key.

The About box is replaced by the Environment Display window.
In this
window,
you will see the release number to the right of the words
Quicken Version.

If your release is R5, you may want to use this Updater to
update your copy
of Quicken 6 to Release R7. If your release number is R7 (or
later),
you do NOT
need this Updater.

3. Click OK to close the Environment Display window.

Subject: 7.5.3 on IIci and LCIII

Dr. Silverstein,

Since I have received quite a number of responses to my Info-Mac posting
on System 7.5.3 vis a vis the IIci (and similar vintage Macs), I am
cc'ing the list with this reply.

On Fri, 19 Apr 1996, Dr. Michael S. Silverstein wrote:

On the IIci, yes - especially screen re-draws, when using the internal
video and an Apple Portrait Display. Autodoubler is the big question mark
here, since I am not using it.

Check some other threads to see if that in itself is problematic. In
general, I see *lots* of advice against disk-doubling schemes, and little
in favor of it. I know that being in Israel may make extra hard drive
space expensive and/or hard to get, but definitely be sure you have
*multiple*, current backup sets before you do anything "wild."

> Will using open transport provide a noticeable increase in
>communication speed?

At 9600bps, I *suspect* not, but I am only guessing. I am using
"Classic AppleTalk," and have used OT only on PCI Macs. That was pre-1.1,
and was problematic. Other threads address this in some detail.

> Needless to say, I am hesitant to upgrade if there is no noticeable
> gain....

You might do what I did: Make an archive of your *complete* current
System folder on each machine - and then make backups of these compressed
files, in case the AutoDoubler later activities render the archive files
inaccessible on your HD's. Then go through the whole clean install
routine - I first did an update over the old System on the IIci, but it
did not do as well with Enabled and Disabled items (Extensions, CP's,
etc.) as the documentation said it would. Later, I copied a "universal"
System folder over to the IIci, and then customized it so as to reduce RAM
usage - which had swelled to something like 5.5mb for the System alone.

If you then encounter problems that you just cannot seem to solve, you
can dump all of 7.5.3, and restore everything from the archive file(s).

Since making my original post, I talked to a person who had installed the
new System on a IIfx, a 9500, several 6100's and a IIci, and his only
problem was that he was not *initially* doing clean installs (beginning
>From 7.5). BTW, when starting from a "clean" copy of 7.5, you can skip
the 7.5.1 update (Update 1.0), and go directly to Update 2.0.

Good luck - and let me know what happens.

Subject: [A] Adjustable Keyboard Problem: SOLVED

Problem
=======
I posted a msg. several weeks ago about how my Apple Adjustable Keyboard was
flaking out. Several keys were failing. Typing became an adventure of
never knowing how many letters would show up on my screen when I touched
a key. My efficiency dropped to the level of chieseling rock
and my bsiness correspoondence loost all prooofessionalism. I was ready to
swear off all technology and rent a cabin in Montana that's recently
become available.

Several info-mac readers wrote to me with the same problem. Some had gone
through three sets of replacement keyboards.

Solution
========
Thanks to e-m from Charlie Giannetto, I was able to fix the keyboard myself.
Charlie suggested disconnecting the keyboard, removing each plastic key
and then squirting some Radio Shack Tuner Cleaner into each white plastic
plunger so the solvent would clean the key's electrical contacts.

It worked!

Charlie correctly included one note of caution: "you may find the can of
Radio Shack Tuner Cleaner to be under great deal of pressure - test it outside
first. What you don't want is the blast to kick back in your face or
get all over the rest of the keyboard!"

After letting the keyboard dry a while, the keys are working like new.

The can of tuner cleaner cost around 8 bucks -- a far better solution than
the AppleSOS offer of $186 for repair/replacement.

Jeff Burns
GrammaTech, Inc.

P.S. In frustration over the lack of assistance from AppleSOS, I contacted
Guy Kawasaki a couple weeks ago. He wrote back that he forwarded my problem
"to a group at Apple that does nothing but solve problems like yours," but I
never heard from them. I guess Apple has about 700 million more pressing
problems to solve this quarter. I wish 'em luck.

Thanks to all who replied. Removing the GX version of ATM and
re-installing ATM from the Adobe Acrobat Reader installer solved the

the fact that both give version number 3.8.3 in the "Get Info" window
and the GX-only version didn't say anything about being GX-only

This incomprehensible message is generated by something related to Adobe
Acrobat. Deinstall Acrobat, and install it again if you need it.
Deinstallation can be done by throwing awy the 'ATM Font Database'.
Be aware, however, that Acrobat also generates some hidden files and
directories. For a complete removal, one must remove these, too. If you
want to reinstall after removing it, this is not needed.

pay rate to say "This is stupid."

I have two appletalk-only printers at home (an LW2f and a Tek PXI). There
I chose the hardware route -- an AsantePrint -- to keep Goodwife Bloom
>From killing me if she wanted to print something and couldn't because my
computer wasn't turned on. I figured that the better part of valor. Hey,
I'm still alive. The AsantePrint box has done good.

The office had some bucks available, so I spent a few for the new Micro
AsantePrint to get my PLW IINT onto the net independent of my office Mac
being powered up and independent of the software it was running.

Hmmm. Got a problem. The printer and the AsantePrint showed up in the
zone called DEFAULT(10390). No surprise. That's where every newbie shows
up. The problem came when I tried to change the printer zone via Asante
Print Manager 2.4.0 software. No prayer. The utility found the printer in
the default zone, but it offered only changes to zones that did not have
left parentheses in their names. We have a bunch of zones named "office
(building)" generally. No left paren? No way to change my printer from
DEFAULT(10390) to IRPA(SMYTH) when all that was offered was IRPASMYTH).
No left paren.

Here is where I start loving Asante. I sent a couple screen snaps to show
what I was talking about They believed me. Even better, the tech support
folk used those screen snaps to prove to the software engineers that they
had a problem. Last week Asante sent me a 2.4.1 version of Asante Print
Manager. Hot damn! It knew about left parens. I could go through the not
sorted list of zones (Several times. Unsorted ain't easy) and put my PLW
IINT into IRPA(SMYTH). I allowed has how that was a major improvement,
but would they prettyplease also sort the list first? This morning's mail
contained version 2.4.2 of Asante Print Manager. Zone choice is indeed
alphabetized. I've died and gone to heaven.

I've known that AsantePrint is a great product from my experience on the
home ethernetlet. I was a tad distressed when it got goofy in the office
environment. I am impressed that Asante looked at our particular office
AppleTalk setup and -- in the space of two weeks -- fixed the major
problem and made its interface user friendly.

I like Asante.

Subject: determining CPU speed

I just got a new PowerPC 7200/90 - that's what I ordered and what the
label on the case says. I ran TattleTech to check out the new machine, and
it reported back that I had a PowerPC 7200/75, which is the same general
CPU but a slower speed. I called Apple, and was told to trust the serial
number which is supposed to be for a 90 MHz system, and to ignore
TattleTech because the app is older than the computer. Are there any other
apps that can identify which CPU is actually inside the box??

Subject: FreeHand 5.5 + RAM Doubler = Molasses? :)

(A copy of this message has also been posted to the following newsgroups:
comp.graphics.apps.freehand,
comp.sys.mac.apps,comp.sys.mac.graphics,comp.sys.mac.system)

On our Power Computing Power 100 (16/1 gig/7.5.3) with RAM Doubler 1.6.1
(and MacsBug 6.5.3 to alleviate crashes), FreeHand 5.5 seems to be quite
the memory hog, even when the total free memory is greater than the amount
of physical RAM installed. I have the RAM Doubler indicator pixel patch
installed, so I know much of the slow-down is due to FreeHand's constant
use of RAM Doubler, and hence virtual memory. No other application we have
makes that indicator pixel blink like FH does.

Nearly every FH file I use is less than 100K, and many are less than 50K.
But even the simplest tasks (clicking a small text block, for example) can
result in a constant flickering of the RD indicator and a several second
delay. Simply quitting and relaunching FH doesn't fix the problem: I have
to restart the Mac to get back up to speed. I use OptiMem 2.1.2
concurrently with RD, but OM's default settings for FH recommend _not_
Optimizing it, and fiddling with those settings seems to make matters
worse, not better.

Running without RD doesn't give me enough RAM to run FH, even with OM
installed to trim the system software a little. FH's memory allocation
size is the default 6000K, which increases to over 9000K if RD is not
present. Increasing the allocation size doesn't seem to help much, nor
does decreasing it. The problem is most noticeable if I run a second
program (like Photoshop) after FH is loaded, then switch back to FH
without closing the second app. However, since I frequently need to have
two or more apps open, quitting Photoshop/etc. every time is not a
convenient option.

I recently upgraded from 7.5.1, and while FH has always been a memory hog,
I must admit it's only been _noticeably_ bad for the past several weeks.
Could I be running into the System 7.5.3 memory loss error? TIA for your
advice.

Ciao Everybody!

I need some helping figuring out how to set up a chat connection with
someone in the US (I'm in Italy) and I hope someone reading this will
write to me with some advice. We're putting together a cyberlink between
two towns, one in the US and the other in Italy, and I would like to be
able to chat with the US organizers in advance of the actual event.
Since I read English slowly I find multi-channel IRC connections really
confusing. Is there some way I could chat one on one with my US
counterpart?

Thanks for any eventual help. Please contact me in e-mail so we don't
clutter up the list with too many details, unless you think it's of
general interest.

Subject: Laserwriter Bridge zaps HP deskwriters - help!

It is a documented fact that installing Apple's LaserWriter bridge
allows one to share LaserWriters on LocalTalk over an ethernet network via
a Mac that is connected to both networks and has the extension installed
BUT all other LocalTalk functions are zapped (e.g. no file sharing across
LocalTalk).
What is not documented is that HP DeskWriter printers cease to
function. They just do not show up in the chooser window.
What solutions? You can connect a Deskwriter via a serial (the
modem) port. This way the owner can use it but it can't be shared, so it
doesn't help my colleagues who want to share their DeskWriters.
I'm wondering about the LocalTalk-EtherTalk bridging software sold
by Apple. As I understand it, this not only 'joins' a LocalTalk and an
Ethernet network via the Mac than runs the software, but also gives access
to other protocols such as TCP/IP. Will it allow access to the Laserwriters
on LocalTalk without zapping the DeskWriters? And what about LaserWriter
Bridge software, will that fit the bill for our needs?

Subject: Making a Mac and PC talk

Ok, Here's what I want to do ...

I just inherited a 386 33Mhz machine. It's sitting in my office running DOS
and eventually, Linux (I have this masochistic side ...) Anyway, the 386
(all IDE) has a Tape backup in the tower. I think - Hey cool, I can backup
my Mac to the tape drive!!!

How? I'd like to find the simplest (and obviously cheapest) way to backup
my Mac to that tape drive. I don't want to do anything else - I don't need
to copy DOS files, I can use good 'ol sneaker network for that - But Tape
backup sure would be a nice thing.

My Mac is a Q660AV. I would be willing to buy an ethernet board for the PC
in order to access the drive if I knew it would work. But that's way
above my head.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Many PC monitors (particularly if purchased with Macs) come with Mac adapters.
The instructions are probably in Japanese, though. The most common and
cheapest
adapters have switches on to make your monitor look to the Mac like an Apple
fixed-resolution monitor (17" or is it 19" running in 832x624 mode, for exam
ple).
More expensive adapters have no switches; instead they have diodes inside which
make them look to the Mac like an Apple multisync monitor, and you can switch
the resolution using the monitors control panel (click option button to see
resolution
setting menu).

Try M0 (em - zero) in the modem setup script if you want no sound at all.

Did you try using HD setup to update (reinstall) the HD driver...
Do you have something else (wrongly terminated) connected externally
to the SCSI bus? Or is the internal disk NOT the Apple original (may be
wrongly terminated, whoever installed it may have not done things right...)
Or maybe the CD was added in later? Both CD and HD are on same internal
bus, maybe CD only (but not HD) should be terminated..

Subject: Portrait Ripoff??

Hi,

I have a Centris 650 and a Radius Precision Color Pivot monitor. I tried
upgrading to 7.5.3, but it was a mess and I decided to hold off until the
dust has settled a bit.

The Macintouch page suggested that the Radius Soft Pivot driver was
incompatible with 7.5.3, so I went to the Radius page and then the Portrait
Display page. Portrait claims to support all Radius monitors, but the
upgrades they had on their page require MacPortrait, which I don't have.
So I called their (toll) number and left a message.

It turns out that they consider "support" to be charging $99 for a monitor
driver and a dongle!! They called me back and told me I had to buy the
dongle and MacPortrait 5.0 if I wanted to pivot my monitor under 7.5.3.

This seems kind of fishy to me.

1) Why do I need to add a dongle to my monitor just for a driver update?

2) Is it *really* 7.5.3 compatible, or have they just *not got any bug
reports*?

3) Why is this upgrade so expensive? What could possibly justify charging
$100 for a monitor driver?

4) I replaced Soft Pivot Driver under 7.5.3 and pivoted my monitor just
fine during one of my tests of 7.5.3...how definite is the conflict in the
first place?

$99 is more than I paid for System 7.5! I am putting this upgrade on
"indefinite" hold.

Hope this has some use to you and others,

Paul
