Insidestory wanted!

Does anyone know whats going on regarding the Geoport-upgrade from 14,4 Kbs
to 28,8 Kbs, which Apple has promised for nearly two years now. Is it
discontinued or what? I have heard (rumours?) that Apple recently has left
the telephony consortium it created in 1994 with IBM, Siemens and AT&T and
given up on the Geoportas a desktop standard.
I know that a third-part provider (Sat-Sagem) can deliver a 28,8 ISDN
Geoport, but what about the rest of us poor fellows, who already have
invested a good amount of pocketmoney in this "great" (but slow) invention.
Are we "discontinued" too?

Anything but baseless rumours are welcome

Subject: 7.5.3 - can't print?

7500/100, running 7.5.3. Network at work, over Ethertalk, with 3
printers: HP Laserjet 4MV, HP Laserjet 4MP, and HP Laserjet 4m.

I upgraded to 7.5.3, and shortly (but NOT immediately) after that
I began to have printing problems. I and several other users (who were
not running 7.5.3, and may not even have been on Macs) were getting
double page printouts. AT any rate, after that I found that printouts
from me were just queuing up and not getting through. Two of the printers
ceased to be useful.

The 4M was slow but consistently printed for me.

What happens with these printers, when in the Chooser (regardless if
I select LaserWriter, LaserWriter 8, or the most reent HP LaserJet driver)
is that the printers appear (although the 4MV takes about 3 seconds to
appear), they can be selected, but if I (for example) do AutoSetup, it
will just spin and spin for like 4 minutes before reporting a communications
error.

Today I managed to get a page of ASCII through on the 4MV. Immediately
after I printed a page of graphics. No dice. It queued up for a while,
it said processing or starting job, yet no flashing light on the
printer itself. Then it died. (could not print because of an error).

When I'm trying to print to the "bad" printers, my system freezes for 3 seconds
every 20 seconds or so, obviously it's trying to send the data.

The problem becomes more urgent because they have taken away the only
printer I could successfuly use, in order to repair it or something.

Our computer support here has basically told me to go fuck myself, they
figure since I upgraded to 7.5.3 it's my problem now. The other person
said "I dunno. Printing works fine from everyone other machine...".

So I have no idea if this is a network problem, a server problem, a calbe
problem, a driver problem, a software conflict or WHAT. I'm pretty freaked
and frustrated.

Any suggestions obviously appreciated...

Steve

I'm not sure which calendar/PIM to recommend, but Claris Emailer has
three useful features for your requirement: 1) it is scriptable (via
AppleScript, Frontier, QuickKeys etc.), so other programs can tell it to
send messages, what to put in them, when to do it and so on and 2) it has
the ability to trigger AppleScripts itself at hourly intervals and 3)
it's cheap. Those scripts can do just about anything, subject to your own
scripting savvy. So if you get a scriptable PIM (other list members will
doubtless recommend something) and Emailer, you will have a very powerful
combination which should offer several ways to meet your requirement. You
might even be able to do it with just Emailer and AppleScript.

Subject: Can an LC drive a 14" Apple Multiple Scan monitor?

Dear netters,

The subjects says it all. I bought a brand-new 14" Apple Multiple Scan
monitor and hooked it up to an LC I want to pass on to my 14-year-old
nephew. This LC has 512 Kb of VRAM (the maximum it can go, according to
specs) and has no trouble driving a 14" Apple RGB monitor at 256 colors.

But it won't work with the Multiple Scan monitor. All I get is snow on the
screen. I tested the monitor with other computers (Quadra 660Av, PowerMac)
and all's fine. The problem is only with the LC.

I suspect I need faster VRAM. I'm also afraid a Multiple Scan monitor may
need more VRAM, but the LC seems to be at its 512 Kb limit. Or is it?

I would appreciate any advise as to whether this can be done, and if so,
the speed and type of VRAM I need. A very frustrated 14-year-old (not to
mention his uncle) will thank you heartily.

Subject: Casio BOSS to Newton translators?

Anybody know of a translation filter for either the Mac or PC which
performs this conversion? I'm halfway through moving the data over manually
and have looked and looked on the net with no luck.

One clue seems to be that early Apple developer kit tools forthe Newton
include sample files for Casio conversion of telephones data to Newton
names format; unforyunately, the tool that these files are associated with
is Slurp. a Serial text communications tool: Imagine your PDA converted
into a unix server, but without Unix commands. A tad confusing.

Thanks for any tips!

Subject: Disk Doctor 3.1.3 reports b-tree error for "VM Storage"

[Gordon - can you junk the preceding copy (20 minutes older), and use this
one instead? - much thanks, Peter]

Hi all,

I just turned on Virtual Memory (Apple's) on my Performa 6115CD (16m),
System 7.5.1, extensions listed below.

Now, when I run Norton Disk Doctor 3.1.3 it (almost always) reports:

An error was found in a file record in the catalog b-tree.
The data fork for the file, "VM Storage", has an incorrect
physical length. (node 14, record 2) (5,6,13)
Node #14, Record Offset 2

Disk First Aid 7.2.2 claims that everything is fine. If I allow Disk
Doctor to repair the problem, it runs clean the next time. If I don't
repair it, and instead reboot without VM, Disk Doctor reports no
problem. I guess this is no shock since the "VM Storage" file is not
allocated in this instance.

It sure sounds to me like Apple took a bit of a "short cut" in exactly
how it creates and allocates the "VM Storage" file, and Norton is
tripping over the unusual "signature" which normally indicates a real
problem. I expect that the anomaly is noticed and silently ignored by
Apple's own Disk First Aid.

Is Disk Doctor reporting a real problem that I should be concerned
about, or is this a known deficiency in Disk Doctor? Is it harmless
to let it repair it?

Eudora 3.0 also adds a number of REALLY great features. Let's see if I can
add to the above response....

Full Drag and drop support. It saves the Info-Mac digests as seperate
"mailboxes" divided by message - which I think is wonderful. I can delete
the messages I don't want to keep and save the ones I need to respond to
etc.

You can add your own labels to the system labels. Say I want Lime green to
go with all the Info-Mac stuff...the label could say Info-Mac. My system
labels aren't effected at all. You can sort, as mentioned, but you can
also view messages (like in the finder) by different catagories. You can
choose what info is displayed by each message. (like I don't care what the
size is - some people may.)

A biggie is that it doesn't divide up the messages (like Info-Mac) that are
too long.

You can add multiple sig.s (more than the current 2) I have a business
sig. an education sig. and also my info-mac (SHORT!!) sig.

Find/Relplace and MANY new features and you can refine the searches to
great detail.

Address book has more features and an area for the address/phone etc. of
the contact - like a real addressbook. Plus you can veiw by nickname,
name, e-mail etc.

Fonts/styles/colors/alignment can be used w/in a message.

You can have the nickname expanded so you know it is the correct
nickname/e-mail address.

I'm sure they're a lot more that I haven't fallen in love with or used..yet!

If I remember correctly, there was a problem with installers mixing up
the Parameter RAM. So you might try:

1) Zap the PRAM with TechTool.
2) Open the Monitors control panel. Set the colour resolution to black
and white. Reset the resolution to your normal setting (e.g. millions of
colours). Reset all other settings (mouse speed, window colours etc.)

Subject: Forms converter

Is there any utility that can take the contents of the clipboard and do a
search and replace on several characters? I'm thinking of a way to convert
the string from a Netscape form posting into somthing readable to reply by
e-mail. All I need is to convert the "+" character to a space and the
"%0D%0A" string to a return. My first thoughts were QuicKeys, Magic
Bullets, or Excalibur but I can't see how any of these can do it. An
AppleScript might be possible if anyone is willing to give it a try but a
small fast application would be best.

By the way, I know there's a Hypercard stack called the InFormer that will
do this but if I wanted to fire up Hypercard I might as well just run Word
and do the search and replace by hand. Is there something quicker for this
simple conversion?

Hello,
I recently picked up a Kodak 450 GL Digital Color Printer at an auction.
The docs say it works with a Mac with the "included NuBus card", but alas
it came without said card. I have a Quadra 660AV and am wondering 1) do
I need this card? It says it needs it because it's a Centronics interface.
and 2) if I need this card, where can I get one? I looked in Mac Warehouse
and MacMall's catalogs and found nothing that looked helpful. Also, if
anyone has one of these printers, can I use regular thermal paper cut to the
right size, or should I use only Kodak paper? It came with 6 boxes with 30
pages each and I'd hate to think that after 180 prints, I'd have to keep
ordering from Kodak every time I need more paper. I'd appreciate any helpful
advice. Since I do not subscribe to this list, please send your responses

You can sort your Launcher Items into subfolders (e.g. Apps, Docs,
Utilities) within your Launcher Items folder. The names of the
subfolders must start with a bullet character and a space; then they
will appear as different panes in the Launcher window.

But you may also try the freeware DragThing 1.6, which is even better.
(It also uses more RAM; maybe the best thing about the Launcher is its
close integration with the Finder.)

If you have access to news groups you should try the following:

comp.sys.mac.games.*

Minutes after I submitted my query to

My solution (FYI): The Page Setup for Create Envelope was changed so
that the image is flipped horizontally _and_ vertically. This sends the
address into the corner where it belongs for printing on the DEClaser.

Subject: Problems with 7.5.3 and old printers

Hi,

Apologies if this is going to the wrong ID. I just got a PowerMac
7600/120(cooks!!) but I have an old HP DeskWriter 550C. I can't print to
it - although I reinstalled the drivers, and they appear in the Chooser,
they don't appear on the desktop(like my LW 300 does). When I try to print
to the HP, the system says its not responding(though it did print a
Printshop Deluxe doc after many attempts). I have moved the printer back
onto the old Mac(IIvx)_ to check hardware, and it works fine.

The Apple info says don't use the old drivers - look for the new ones on
the CD. HP drivers on an Apple CD - don't make me laugh!!

I have Internet access, but have failed to find an HP site with updated
drivers.

Can anyone help - I have small kids who want to be able to do invites,
cards etc with PSD?

Please mail me at [email protected] & I will post a digest to the list

Thanks

Subject: Q: Advice on Database required ...

Hi everyone!

My girlfriend is studying Russian Politics, and I'm receiving about 80 kb of
news about events in
Russia and the CIS for her every day. The news have the following format:

> e-mail gibberish
> Source Volume Number date (e.g. OMRI Daily Digest Vol. 2 No. 98 25. May 1996)
>
> RUSSIA
>
> Headline. Newstext - Correspondent (in 1 paragraph)

> ...
>
> EASTERN EUROPE
>
> Headline. Newstext - Correspondent (in 1 paragraph)
>
> Headline. Newstext - Correspondent (in 1 paragraph)
> ...

As you can guess, its pretty impossible to keep track of what is where
(especially if you have to
quote everything in your dissertation / PhD). So I want to put everything into
a
database which
should be able to do the following:

Search the Database for things like "find (Yeltsin OR Chernomyrdin) AND
(Zyganov
BUTNOT
Zhirinovsky) between 15. Jan. 1995 and 16. March 1996". Found records should be
displayed as
a list of the Headlines, and clicking on a particular headline should show the
Newstext in a
separate field. Single/multiple records should be able to be marked (e.g. for
export or to narrow
the search) or removed from the list of found records, and searchprofiles
should
be stored (for
re-use / printout). And last but not least - an easy way to import a total of
about 120 Mb of
textfiles (News dating back to 1990).

I thought about using HyperCard (and started with it), Filemaker or FoxPro, but
can't really
decide which one would be suited best. Also any advice on how best to structure
the database
(e.g. Russia / CIS / Eastern Europe or Year by Year or ...) would be greatly
appreciated.
