Subject: [!] Update on submissions backlog
Hello,
First I want to apologize to everyone again for the delays in getting files
posted. I am still trying to get caught up, but there are roughly 300-400
files still waiting. (My finals went well, thanks.
through these as fast as possible. Once this has happened, I will be taking
steps to speed up the submission process to make it faster and easier than
it has ever been. (Once you get a backlog as large as this, you see where
the system can be improved!)
Some points to help speed things up:
* As before, please don't resubmit your file. It probably has not been lost
but is in the queue.
* When submitting a file, an update, a correction, or a question regarding
a specific file you've posted, please put the name of the program in
question as the subject.
* When submitting a program, make sure you include an abstract and that it
is NO MORE THAN 50 lines.
* If you have not already, please read the posting guidelines found on the
Info-Mac home page.
Speaking of which, some people have reported problems connecting to the
page. These have since been corrected.
Thanks again to everyone for their patience.

One of the early wonders of the Mac was its revolutionary ability to do
copy and paste across various applications. Unlike other areas in the
Mac's system and software that have changed and progressed over the
years, copy and paste has not evolved. How many times have you found
yourself going back and forth copying in one application and pasting in a
different application, wishing to yourself that you could copy 5-10 items
at a time, then go to another application and paste each of these items.
Now you can!

Subject: [*] Mando! Lite v1.1 -- An Interactive Chord Book for Mandolin
Mando! Lite v1.1 provides chord lookup for Mandolin in standard tuning.
12 chord types are supported with 3 or 4 different fingerings each,
depending upon the chord. To plot a chord diagram, select the root of
the chord from the Root menu, and the type of the chord from the Type
menu. Then, diagram it with the Form 0,1,2,3 buttons from the tool bar.
Form 0 chords are available for Major, Minor, and Dominant 7th chord
forms and are generally the open or common forms of the chord.
Form 1 chords generally have the root on the 4th string. Form 2 chords
generally have the root on the 3th string, and Form 3 chords generally have
the root on the 2nd string.
This function requires a Macintosh with System 7.1 or higher and a 68020,
68030, 68040, or PowerPC processor.

This is a beta of the latest version of my program, Marathon-Phile Juggler.
*NEW FEATURES*
Version 2.0 introduces a completely new drag-n-drop interface that allows
users to drag files and sets to and from the Finder. You can now also add
comments to your files and sets.
*What is it?*
Marathon-Phile Juggler is a program designed to manage your Marathon files.
I wrote it because I was not satisfied with any of the current file
managers. One unique feature is that you have the ability to save your sets
as double-clickable icons. Another is a feature that tells Marathon where
to look for its resources-no longer will you have make copies of your files
for each patch or combination of patches you want to apply.

(C) 1994-1996 Stuart Cheshire
MetriTalk is an AppleTalk Device Driver 'adev' file that provides
wireless AppleTalk communication over Metricom packet radio tranceivers.
Metricom radios are channel-hopping spread-spectrum packet radio devices
that operate in the 902-928MHz band. They have a peak throughput of
100kbit/sec. With a clear line-of-sight path they can have a range of
several miles but in built-up areas about half a mile is more typical.
In the San Francisco Bay area, and on a few University campuses,
Metricom has installed pole-top repeaters that forward the packets,
giving them effectively unlimited range in those areas. For more
information, see http://ResComp.Stanford.EDU/~cheshire/Metricom.html.

Subject: [*] PrinterSwitch 1.0.3
PrinterSwitch is a control panel/system extension that allows you to
easily select among many different printers when you print documents in
your applications. It eliminates the need to use the Chooser to select a
printer.
PrinterSwitch appears right when you need it; when you select Print or
Page Setup from any program. No need to memorize hot key sequences! It
can also be activated by a convenient Control Strip Module.
PrinterSwitch complements Apple's new Desktop Printers because it allows
you to select different print devices even if your application won't let
you drag & drop documents onto a Desktop Printer.
It knows about LaserWriter 7 and 8 PPD files and makes sure to use the
proper PPD for each printer, eliminating a common source of Postscript
printing errors.
PrinterSwitch is shareware with a 14-day free trial period. Registration
is $14.00 for single user licenses; site and worldwide licenses are
available. Convenient registration via Kagi Shareware - pay with any
currency, credit cards, checks, etc. via mail, fax, or the internet.
Changes in Release 1.0.3
* Added "Change page setup options before printing" - useful when
switching between LaserWriters and ImageWriters, LabelWriters, etc.
* Fixed two nasty bugs (see readme for details)
* Release 1.0.3 is a recommended upgrade for all PrinterSwitch users.

Subject: *Web Counter script hard to find
Dear Digest Readers,
I am having a h* of time finding a good web page counter.
All of them have such lengthy code, it is impossible to tell where I am
supposed to fill in the location of the page that has the counter on it,
and none of the ones I've searched on the Net give me the correct HTML
code to include the web counter on my page. I've tried digits.com, but
they are often busy yielding inaccurate results.
Here is an idea for a counter:
Someone who has already made a perl script that will work with all
providers that use cgi-bin directories could make a Netscape form.
The form would contain the following fill in the blanks
A: location of web page to have the counter
B: location where perl scripts are stored at server
C: Ask if NCSA or CERN is used on server
D: Ask server type if necessary.
E: Ask if one desires specific accesses from IP addresses to be ignored
with the fill in the blank be several IP addresses.
For me it is the following:
A: ~/abrody/.public_html/index.html
B: ~abrody/.public_html/cgi-bin
C: NCSA
D: SunOS
E: 206.148.244.200 and up
Upon the completion of the form, the user can have the option of
downloading the automaticly generated perl script, or having it e-mailed
to them.
Essentially the form is a fill in the blank for what is to be inserted
into the script that one should not have to read.
If someone has already made such a service available, please tell me its
URL, if not, please keep my e-mail address below for when one does
become available.
If someone already has a completed Perl script, or where those Five
questions are posed in plain English in the comments before the place to
be inserted, please send it to me. So far I've looked at ten different
sites, all have cryptic information all over the place. I just need to
know where to fill in the blanks, and no other garbage interceding my
reading of the script.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Is there anyone out there using a MacHandwriter graphics tablet who has

is some fundamental conflict between 7.5.3 and the MacHandwriter driver
software on my Mac and am interested in determining whether the problem
is just some quirk with my system or a more general problem. I called
CIC, the MacHandwriter manufacturer, and they basically said that they
do not intend to update the driver until Copland is released. If more
people are experiencing this problem and complain to them, maybe they
will change their plans. I will include information about how to

Here's the problem:
I have a Quadra 610 (more config details below) that was running 7.5.1

installer adds some resources to the system file). Finally, I
gradually added my other extensions and control panels.
For a while, the new system seemed quite stable. Then, I decided to
print something, so I opened the chooser, selected the HP DeskWriter
550C driver, and printed with no problem. Later, when I rebooted, I got
to the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen (right after the happy Mac) and got
an "illegal instruction" system bomb. (Note that this is before normal
extensions start loading, but the icon for the MacHandwriter "Position"
extension normally appears around this time, indicating that the
MacHandwriter ADB software is loading.) Fortunately, I had made a copy
of the clean 7.5.3 system file, so I rebooted from floppy, replaced the
system file, and everything was OK. Then, sometime later, it happened
again. After a tortuous process of repeatedly installing 7.5.3 and
varying (a) the items selected for installation, (b) the extensions
loaded at startup, and (c) desk accessories and apps run after startup,
I concluded the problem occurred only under the following circumstances:
- MacHandwriter installed
- Chooser is opened for the first time after the installation, whether
any Chooser extensions are selected or not (the problem occurs on
subsequent reboots)
This happens no matter how I install 7.5.3 and whether I open the
Chooser when all extensions are loaded, only Apple extensions are
loaded, or no extensions are loaded.
I dug around some more and discovered that when the Chooser opens, it
adds two resources to the system file. One is a new "alis" resource
(number -8192) and the other is an additional "STR" resource (also
-8192). I'm not an expert about the system file, so it's not clear
to me what are in these resources, but they contain data about printer
drivers (when I have the DeskWriter extension installed, the data
includes the name of the DeskWriter driver; when it's not installed,
the data defaults to info about an ImageWriter driver). When I delete
these two resources from the system file using ResEdit, the system is
cleansed (identical to the clean system file, as verified by ResCompare)
and boots and runs fine. Interestingly, the Chooser adds exactly the
same resources to the system file under 7.5.1 but causes no ill effects.
Also, I tried the 7.5.1 Chooser w/7.5.3 and still had the problem.
Clearly, 7.5.3 is doing something different from 7.5.1 when loading
drivers and the MacHandwriter driver is interfering with the printer
drivers (or with something else that is activated when those Chooser
resources are inserted in the system file).
The bottom line for me is that I can either use the MacHandwriter or
print, but not both (unless I methodically replace the system file
before rebooting after I print). Unfortunately, the MacHandwriter is
my only pointing device, since I don't have a mouse. Thus, this
problem is quite inconvenient for me. It would be nice if CIC would
fix it. If you are having similar problems, or have any idea of what
the problem might be, please contact me. Also, I would appreciate it
if you would forward your information to CIC. They can be contacted at:

Subject: [Q] Norton Disk Doctor/Stuffit SpaceSaver annoyance!
Has anyone else noticed an annoying effect of Norton Disk Doctor (part of
3.1.3 set) running on a disk that has been Stuffit Del 4.0 SpaceSaved? In
particular, Disk Doctor automatically unSpaceSaves (almost) every file on
the HD, when it checks all the files to see if there any probs (the last
stage of Disk Doctor)
What's the use of Spacesaving a HD if the entire process is undone when one
tries to see if Netscape has fowled up the HD with Disk Doctor. I do this
check once a week or when Netscape crashes. (not as frequently as you
think). This unspaceSaving adds minutes to an already long Disk Doctor
process. The file names don't flash by in a blink of an eye anymore. I miss
that
Instead, it pauses at each Spacesaved file and unstuffs it (and doesn't
restuff it back) to check on it. Thus at the end of the process...MBs of
uncompressed files that must undergo recompression!
I am aware that this could be an unavoidable effect of using any file based
compression scheme and Disk Doctoring. But I want to make sure.
***
So is this effect limited to just Spacesaved harddrives? Am I missing some
important toggle/switch? Or does this also happen to Norton DiskDoubled
Hard drives?
***
System:
System 7.5.3 (clean install and update)
SpaceSaver (part of Stuffit Deluxe 4.0)
RamDoubler 1.6.1
many other extensions/cdevs but no other conflicts/probs noted.
Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.
Email me/post to comp.sys.mac.system or comp.sys.mac.apps/mail back to
digest. Thanks again.

Subject: [Q] SOCKS-compatible newsreader?
Would someone know if either YA- or VA- Newswatcher is able to transfer
via a SOCKS proxy server, or know of a Usenet client that does?
With the addition of a couple new roommates to my apartment, we now have
my Mac (Performa600cd 20/500) networked (via TCP/IP over Ethernet) with
two dosboxes running Win95 and a UNIX box running FreeBSD 2.0. A nice
setup, since we can all share a common 'net connection through my ISP,
but we've been able to find no true proxy servers for the FreeBSD box
right now, only a SOCKS server. So far the only programs I've found that
support SOCKS are Anarchie and Netscape. So far so good, but I don't get
too many kicks out of Netscape's newsreader (especially since I'm used
to Newswatcher), and it's a joke when it comes to downloading
multisegment .hqx files (such as found in comp.sys.mac.binaries).
So...back to the original question...anyone know of a way to make one of
the variants of Newswatcher recognize a SOCKS host, or know of another
newsreader that works?
Responses via this digest or via e-mail ([email protected]) greatly
appreciated...

A GNAT Ada 95 for the Mac is being developed by a team
(I am not a member).
It will, of course, be free, but to use it you need to buy MachTen,
a commercial Unix which executes on top of Mac OS, but provides a
complete Unix as a sort of combination application/operating system.
There is a (not very active) mailing list for GNAT-Mac available
by sending

Gordon is right--SOMETHING must be done if we're not to end up like
Windoze users, having to buy a commercial program to de-install a large
application. Personally, I must have a dozen mystery files in my
Preferences folder, for which I have no idea what created them. Something
I trashed last year? A vital part of Photoshop? C'mon, software
publishers...give us a clue!
However, Get Info comments are not good enough, since the preferred way
of rebuilding the desktop starts with deleting the desktop files. Say
bye-bye to the comments. I like Gordon's WWW idea; tied to type/creator
codes, and helped by nominally-descriptive filenames, this could actually
work.

Subject: Mac system software
As a follow-up to Gordo's treatise on ways Apple can improve the mess we
call a System Folder...
Apple should write a Java applet that gathers up information on one's
machine parameters (RAM, ROM version, etc.) and system files (CDEVs, INITs,
etc.), then connects to a server application at Apple that automatically
replaces whatever is obsolete - with new versions. (For the faint of
heart, this could be just a suggestion list back to the user - what's old,
what's missing, what's no longer needed, etc.)
Voila - no more nagging "am I up to date" questions. And fewer Mac users
(Apple customers) bad-mouthing Apple because their system software has
gotten out of whack. (Of course, this doesn't change the fact that Apple
is out of whack with a deepening and unnecessary level of complexity in
system software - this is what really needs fixing. We are patched to
death.)

Are you ready for a long, sad, story? Actually, I'll make it short as possible
by leaving out the whys (for the detailed whys, visit
http://www.netzone.com/~witowski/mac.html - I'll have this issue posted by the
week's end). You must have Telecom version 2.3.3 for that software to work
with System 7.5.3. On a 660AV (and 840AV) you must install Telecom version 1.5
or eariler (known as Express Modem software then) before you can install
Telecom 2.0 or later. You can get all of the Telecom/Express Modem software at
Apple's ftp site: ftp://ftp.info.apple.com. Another issue to be aware of in
your case is that updating to System 7.5.3 installs Apple Guide 2.0.2. This
version of Apple Guide (2.0.2) will cause the Fax Terminal and Fax Viewer
(Telecom software) to quit with a type 1 error on launch when running on a
660AV (or 840AV). The work around is to disable it or use version 1.5 (of the
Apple Guide).

available for the Mac?
